Just curious. Anybody out there train? Got kiddos that train? Fight in MMA?

I train in BJJ in Houston. Boxed when I was younger although I still spar with some of our fighters.

Always wanted to ask.

I took a month of jiu jitsu earlier this year, but I had to give it up. I loved it, but all the rolling on the floor was killing my knees. I would like to get back into self defense eventually, I just rarely have the time.

I did some Tae Kwon Do in high school, but this was before the MMA craze started. I enjoyed it back then.

Pros: Good exercise & confidence builder (esp for young people).

Cons: It was one of those mass-appeal black-belt mills. There were a lot of people there, and you got very little real world scenario self defense training. The sparring was fun, but almost too structured. Still some training is better than none. I'd recommend learning some form of grappling (judo or jiu-jitsu) if you're interested in real self-defense. Of course, in real-world situations, if your assailant has a gun, none of it will matter. If you've seen the movie "The Foot Fist Way" with Danny McBride (Kenny Powers from Eastbound & Down), it's a very good satire of the types of guys you'd see in this sort of center. The fun aspect is subjective, but sometimes, you'd be sparring someone who had very little or no control of their hits/kicks, and they could hurt you if you weren't careful.

I had several years of judo and kenpo back in my 20's. Currently studying Krav Maga and have my 10 yo daughter enrolled as well. My other kids will follow as soon as they are old enough. It is not as flashy or well known as some of the other more mainstreams styles, but I like the philosophy behind Krav Maga.

to grab testicles at all times. when that isnt possible, to kick, bite or nuzzle testicles. i think it must be completely ineffective against women
The proper technique is grab, squeeze, twist and pull. All in a nice fluid motion.

Actually, the philosophy I was referring to is to put your opponent down on the ground so that they either do not want to, or can not, get back up. And preferably to do so as quickly as possible. And yes, if it means going for the eyes, throat, nards, or what have you, then that is fine.

I'm sure it would be helpful on the streets of Charm City.

I had to Google Krav Maga and Eskrima as well. I went to a few Karate lessons years ago. Class was taught by a renowned Korean black belt. Way too intense for me.
Knuckle push ups, duck walks. He worked us to death. I wimped out.

I had wanted to study one of the arts several years ago but didn't due to moving around some. Now, at 55, Yoga is a little too intense for me.
