I watched the premiere last night. I don't usually watch until Hollywood week, but Hubby wasn't home and it's been so long since "I" used the television clicker that I didn't change the channel lest I break my streak...:rolleye2:

I think there were a lot of average vocalists that got through to Hollywood.

I think Steven Tyler was a hoot to watch. Has he had some plastic surgery to look like a Chinese Crested Hairless?

I think JLo mimmicks Paula Abdul in her new role.

I think Randy was himself, but followed the lead of Steven and JLo often.

I didn't see anyone in the New Jersey contestants that really blew me away in a good way but there were one or two who might challenge other contestants for advancement.

What did you guys think?

My girls and I always watch. At first, when I heard the judges would be Randy, JLo and Steven Tyler, I thought there would be no way I could enjoy it this season. Then I heard Steven interviewed by Howard Stern earlier this week and he KILLED! He was so interesting that I had to watch along with my girls last night. I was NOT disappointed. I really thought Steven's facial expressions, his loosy-goosy way of speaking, and his enthusiasm made the show. Jennifer didn't get on my nerves as badly as I anticipated, but she's going to have to learn how to critique people. Randy was as he always has been...a non-factor.

I admit I cried about the very last contestant, the little 16 yr old boy from The Bronx. Difficult story to watch, but after he sang and was told he was going to Hollywood, then his brother came in and started hugging him...that was it. I was done for! I'm such a sap.

The tear jerking endings are killin' me! The hydrocephalus baby mama put me over the edge last nite. :frown:

But again, Steven Tyler is keeping me laughing....a wonderful addition to the show!

I'm the exact opposite - I only watch it during the first rounds to see the crazies.

The two I remember were:

1. The 18 year old singing Frank Sinatra while snapping his fingers the way Ol' Blue Eyes did

2. The guy that sang Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance." I was actually singing along with him, which didn't please my 10 year old who was watching downstairs.

I didn't watch 10 minutes of the show last season, but I've watched it twice already this season.

I was a fan of Aerosmith back in their heyday, so I thought Steven Tyler might be kinda cool on American Idol. I was wrong. He comes across as pretty much a dork on the show, and more than a little bit creepy (imho). Maybe he's just trying to hard.

A couple of nighs ago I watched when the first group was in Hollywood and they started weeding them out. What's pitiful to watch is people like the couple who are no longer a couple but think they're the next Sonny and Cher. They kept the girl and ditched the guy and he just couldn't accept the fact that he's been told he's not God's Gift To Music. He was wailing a song on his way out of the building in an attempt to show them he could cut it.

Good stuff! All the crying and emotional breakdowns - surely that is staged. :D

I'm liking Steven Tyler on AI. He and Jennifer Lopez totally overshadow Randy Jackson. It's like he might as well not even be there, and that makes me laugh. I'm interested to see how they do when they have to give critiques to the singers who advance to the live shows. That becomes more difficult because they're getting to know these kids more and trying to give them advice on how to get better each week. I'm hoping to see some real, pointed and spot-on critiques - something the show has been missing, even from Simon for the most part, in the past.

We are going to have to record AI to watch Survivor or vice versa! I'm hoping something will change in the tv schedule to accommodate us, but until then, there's a conflict. There may be other conflicts as well, depending on what you watch.

So far, I've actually enjoyed James & Casey tonight. Unfortunately, I'm one of those who "didn't get it" with Paul.
