Pitiful 1AA team that Bama shouldn't even be playing. Lost their last nine games last year, last of which was 62-0 to Florida.

I know it is good to have somewhat of a warm up game first on the schedule, but I can't understand why we picked this team. Their stadium looks like somewhere a high school team should be playing. Furman took this team to the cleaners. Furman! Was Hoover too busy for the first week of the season? As bad as this team is we should have our starters out by the end of the first quarter.

Easy there Flyboy!! Furman's got one helluva program. And in reference to WC's stadium, keep in mind that this is a 1-AA school...nowhere near the amount of revenue/fan base of anyone in 1-A.

I know that they travel well......there should be about 87 rabid Catamount fans in attendance.

Make fun if you want, but I recall a Duke team last year taking a lead against us into halftime. And let's no forget our stellar performances against Fl Int'l, in which we barely moved the ball the first half of the game. Oh, and for good measure, recall that overwhelming spectacle that was the Miss. State game.

We have to prove how good we are on the field. If we don't beat W. Carolina 50-0, then we haven't improved that much at all.

One more note about Furman University. Before they were called the Purple Paladins, they were known as the Christian Knights. They elected to change the name of the team due to the obvious problem of abbreviating their name.

Yeah, they were not good last year even in their own division. No reason to believe this year will be better. I know schools like this badly need the revenue and the exposure that comes with playing the Alabamas of the world, and most division 1 teams now start the season with a tune up game, but .... Yeah, yeah, any given team, we've got a whole new scheme, etc. It won't matter. If I was their coach, I'd worry about this being the sort of game that can ruin your whole season. Don't tell me about Duke last year (I sat through it). Duke would likely beat these guys by 40. If it happens otherwise, get ready for a season that will make Dubose's last campaign seem like the glory years.

Here's what I know about the Catamounts -- they are going to get hammered two weeks from Saturday. I hope no one gets injured.

And before you say I'm overconfident about a team with a new coach, I think Vandy could be a tough game for us.

I am not trying to put down Furman, I'm sure they have a fine football program. But they are not 1-A material and if they whip a team, well that is not saying much for that team. And of course WC doesn't have the revenue/fan base of a 1-A team, and there is nothing wrong with that. I am not putting them down. I am simply stating that as a top tier program in D 1-A football, I don't think playing games like this helps us one bit. And I can't imagine how playing UF last season and then Bama and UGA this season would help WC any either. WC's first 3 games include us and UGA. They are going to just get their players banged up early in the season and it can't be much fun for those guys to go into games when you have no chance of winning.

And as for Duke, as bad as Duke is they are by no means on the level of WC. Duke is at least a 1A program in a BCS conference. They may be the whipping boy of that conference but they are 1A none the less.

The new 12 game season has caused many schools to have trouble scheduling that extra game. With many game contracts scheduled years in advance it's not as easy as one may think to schedule that game. I suspect that a few years down the road this will be easier, once current contractual obligations have been met and there are more teams available to schedule. With our remaining schedule I say that this is no different than any other major university out there. You fill the schedule with who's available and work towards a better opponent in the future. If you are worried about sos last I heard bama's schedule was ranked in the top 15 most difficult and may be in the top 5 next year when we have to go on the road for GA, LSU, Tenn, AK, and the like.

I'll take 45 to 50 points. The improvement hopefully will be the Tide with 600 yards of total offensive and W. Carolina only 150 total yards. I would like to see 250 rushing and 350 passing. I want to see 65 Alabama players in the game. The more playing time the Tide players can muster the better. Last year I almost lost it. Lack of effort and so many missed opportunities inside the red zone. The RED Zone will determine how far the Tide has come. :BigA:

I've been muddling about in Western Carolina websites, and there doesn't seem to be anything there to cause loss of sleep among Tide fans.

WC's 2006 record is disaster. They were 0-7 in the Southern Conference and 2-9 overall. Losses include Appalachian State 31-9, Liberty 21-0 and Wofford 35-7. They are purported to have won two games, but I have been unable to learn the names of their victims.

In the Florida 62-0 calamity, Urban Meyer unleashed Tebow on them. Tim dashed for two TDs and threw for two more.

Their spring game scrimmage ended in a 6-3 decision, with all points scored by their kicker, who booted for both sides. He seems to be WC's brightest hope to score on Bama.

Their top point-maker in 2006 was a runner named Darius Fudge who racked up 1,000 yards. But I checked this year's roster and Fudge is not on the menu.
Their 2006 QB, who accounted for over 900 yards passing, is also missing from the 2007 roster.

Ordinarilly, I would ask what in the world are we doing playing Western Carolina but given that our defense needs a game like this to get their feet wet and get settled in so I'm not completely against the decision to play this game.

I think it will be a good tune up for the Vandy game and we'll need that because Vandy always gives us problems.

I'd leave the defensive starters in for a full three quarters to start gelling together and get some confidence built in each other. This game came along at the right time.
