When I was writing my dissertation 10 yrs ago, every time I sent drafts to my adviser for comment, the first thing he would do was run a mass edit changing all 2 spaces to 1 space... with track changes on so then I would have to accept all those changes to see what his real comments were .... then I would change 1 back to 2 and proceed

Two spaces is old school. When I took Typing in high school (early 60s) we had it drilled into us that after a Period you use two spaces.
After a Comma you use one space. I put that to good use in college. I must have typed hundreds of Term Papers for Frat Boys, and they all passed muster.
Term Papers were my Burger ,Beer, and Dating money. Yep, I drank quite a bit in college.

Two spaces after periods and colons has been my practice. I've tried to convert to one space - just can't make myself do it. Looks less readable to my eyes.
