Are you ready to retire?

I'm curious,

Have you saved/saving (investing) enough to retire when you want to? I am studying this and have seen evidence that 60% of people 50+ have yet to start saving/investing seriously for retirement. I can't believe that statistic...Assume that SS is bankrupt.....are you on track to retire at an age where you can actually enjoy life without work? I know the usual suspects will chime in with non-substantive rhetoric, but I would really like to know from my Tide brothers and sisters if you're ready/have a plan to retire....RTR!!!

No way I'm I on track. I've had to assault my savings just to get by. I'm just starting over so it will be a while. I like work but I am looking forward to retirement and what it offers. I am planning as if there will be no SS or Medicare.

I am 44 years old and expect to work at least another 25 years before I'll be ready to hang it up. Prior to a few years ago, I was on pace to be able to work full-time until my mid-50's, then transition to part-time work for a few years before full retirement. We still pay into our retirement plans, but at a much, much smaller pace, and I really don't see that amount increasing much until my practice starts making more money, and my practice isn't going to start making more money until people are in a better financial position in general.

i will be 59 when our daughter graduates high school so probably nothing until at least then. i have been actively putting money away (401k etc) since my late 20s (I'm 43 now) and the same with my wife. for the next couple of years i am not putting anything back since i am working part time for my wife and will not be eligible for SEP(?) for another 2 years. i am taking what would have been put away for retirement and trying to eat away at our mortgage debt (we are sitting on three homes right now, all technically "underwater"/unsellable, but are renting the two extras which helps). our goal is to have the mortgages gone (we have very little debt otherwise) by our early 50's.

As of now, I'm on track to retire at 60 (42 now). Of course, getting knee-capped in the stock market again or change in employment could jeopardize that plan. Really wish I was smarter with my money relative to retirement in my late 20's/early 30's, but fortunately have been able to recover somewhat.

Don't know if I'll ever actually retire. Don't want to. I just turned 30 and I've never really been a fan of working for someone else. I'm working on some things now to generate residual income while I can get paid to do what I enjoy.

I am preparing for retirement, but like you, I do not know that I will want to. I might want to scale back a little on hours.
I am in the middle of a retirement decision, really - whether to take my former home off the market and keep it as a rental property, and save up for a down payment on a primary residence in our new area...

Have her amend the service requirement. Problem solved.

We are in good shape, but I think retirement will be a thing of the past for most before long.

I've been trying to retire for two years, however, I am certain, as of today, that I will be working as long as I can climb into a wheelchair, wipe my own drool and change my own diapers. :frown:

Am I READY?! Heck yeah but at age 36 I simply cannot. I've been investing in my Roth IRA since I was 22. My wife is in the school system retirement plan but to be honest. It is hard to say if we'll be able to retire in 25-30 years or not. A lot can happen between now and then. I hope to goodness we'll able to but who knows?

Eh, gonna be another 20 years until my girls are out of school, so I'm telling clients I'll promise you another 20 unless I kick out ahead of time. I rectum we'll be fine when the time rolls around, all else considered equal.
