Game Thread: ARMY - NAVY GAME

Both my Grandfathers served in the Navy in WWII so I always primarily pull for Navy.

One of my Uncles though served in the Army in Vietnam and was close with my Mom so I’m never upset for Army to win either.

My grandfather's brother went to the USNA, so I favor Navy. But I really root for both institutions.

Everyone should go to an Army-Navy game. I've been to only one, but it was truly memorable. Not for the game so much (neither team was very good that year), but for the parade into the stadium.

Most are in Philadelphia, but they occasionally rotate and the one we went to was in Baltimore.

Trust me, it will renew your faith in youth.

We even got a funny story out of it. The USMA cadets marched in perfect line and in unison. The Midshipmen, not so much. Their lines were a bit wavy, they were more walking than marching, and weren't even close to in step with each other.

There was a Marine alum of the USNA near us, dressed a lot like Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now. In a booming voice (using not a few non-TF words) he called for order in the ranks and let them know that they were embarrassing the Academy.

These are highly accomplished kids, but they're still kids. Eyes popped wide open, heads turned left and right, they got lined up and in step. Then a few companies later in the procession, those Midshipmen hadn't heard the Marine, and they were back to a more casual march in.

After the game, if you can watch the teams singing each other's alma maters without choking up, there's something wrong with you.

We are a house divided…

Dad and most in my family were Army… But my wife lost her first husband and he served on the USS George Washington for several years… But we don’t worry too much! Her former SIL was army and did several tours in Iraq so it is all in fun.

Over the last several years I've pulled for Army. It was such an even series for many decades, then Navy went on that long winning streak.

I don't have a lot of military history in my family. I have a great uncle who fought and lost a leg on the island of Okinawa in World War 2, but I don't remember if he was in the Army or Marines. I have an uncle who served in Vietnam; I believe he was Army.

the true biggest rivalry in sports. The men on the field would give their lives to defend the lives of everyone watching. It’s bittersweet as it marks the end of the college football regular season. But with that, who ya got?

GO NAVY - BEAT ARMY!
Go Army, but biggest? Not sold on that at all.

I'm a retired Senior Chief Corpsman. My son was recruited by USNA for football. We had 50 yard line tickets and pre-game chats on the field with Coach Paul Johnson. We met Coach Jeff Monken and Coach Ken when they were young assistants there. Son didn't make the slate and was commissioned after taking a path different from the Academy. He's a Marine Corps major now and stationed two miles from us after being gone for most of the past several years.

Go Navy
