The Porsche company went through a slump in the 90's....but their Boxster development and sales are credited with putting them back on track. Then when they put the Cayenne out things really took off. They haven't looked back since.......
They made the 914s, which were not good, then they tried front engines with the 924 and 928. But they got back to their roots. 928s are pretty cool, though.

2013 Boxster. 6-speed manual. Not that great in the low end, but will get the adrenaline flowing in 3rd through 5th gear. 6th is just cruising.

Huge fun with the top down in the spring and fall.

Beautiful!

You've had this one for a while, right @4Q Basket Case ?

Curious what the circumstances were for your acquisition. Were you on the hunt for one of these and this one happened to become available? Only asking because I love hearing the backstories behind how we end up with our various wheels. Thanks!

Also, how long have you had her and have you had any issues? Thanks!

I've had the car for not quite 8 years now. My previous car had a design flaw in the engine that would have been really expensive to fix and was a problem waiting to happen. So I was scouting around, but not truly looking for something immediately.

Ran across this one on CarMax -- it had only 12K miles and was clearly someone's weekend toy. Also a manual, so not likely to be stolen. CarMax has some quirks, but this was the third one I'd bought from them, so I'm happy with the process overall.

It has only 62K miles now, so while I drive it regularly, I don't put a ton of miles on it. Have had no mechanical problems. But have had a couple of electrical ones, particularly around the operation of the convertible top. And yes, they were expensive to fix.

Porsches also tend to hold their value. So I think I could sell it for only about $7K less than I bought it for.

One side story -- it has Porsche Carbon Composite Brakes (PCCBs). That's what the yellow calipers signify. It's about a $10K option when new, but doesn't add a ton of resale value. I'm not even sure CarMax knew what they are. I certainly didn't pay for them and didn't even know what they were at the time.

My '01 is only a 5 speed.

All of my previous Porsche's were no newer than '83, so this is essentially my first modern Porsche.

I still have 3 of my other ones....including the '83 (911SC Targa) which is currently undergoing some restoration work including engine and gearbox rebuild.

Getting back to the Boxster, when you wrote "Not that great in the low end, but will get the adrenaline flowing in 3rd through 5th gear. 6th is just cruising." - it caught my attention because 1st and 2nd gear in mine is freaking amazing. Maybe because mine's a 5 speed and yours is a 6 speed.

Backstory on mine is while looking for motorcycles on FB MP a few months ago....a real pretty Boxster showed up from a seller right here in NSB. Original owner - in perfect condition, manual, blue over gray, and what I considered to be a fantastic price. It was already sold by the next morning before I could contact the owner.

I wasn't even looking to buy one mind you....it just appeared...lol..... But it really got me thinking about getting one, if I could find another with a great price in similar condition and a desirable colour....and a local sale.

Well not 3 weeks later this yellow one showed up - all boxes checked. Contacted the owner and later in the day we had a deal - over the phone. He pulled the ad and brought the car to my house a couple days later followed by his girlfriend so he'd have a ride. They were going to dinner here in town so two birds-one stone.

Car was perfect as described. Two older (mature) guys doing a deal on a sports car - old school.

Mine has a killer aftermarket stereo (Dual), the 17" wheels, a high performance exhaust, plus some other desirable options. Everything works as should and had the IMS bearing swap done back in '08 - copy of work invoice provided to me - plus some other stuff - incl. new clutch.

The driver's seat bottom is not nice and full so will have to do something there. Using a small cushion for now. Is also missing the hoop mesh inserts. Also has 127,742 miles on the clock...but you wouldn't know it by looking at her.....

You have a really great color there. I’m not familiar with it, so guessing there weren’t many of those.

If you change the oil, the engine will run for 500K miles. One selling point for me was that they have timing chains, as opposed to timing belts. They’ll go 150K before you have to worry about them.

But Boxsters also have strange weak points. One that’s coming for me is a leak in the coolant reservoir. Kind of like cataracts and prostate cancer, if you live long enough / keep the car long enough, it’ll go bad on you.

The part, even Porsche OEM, is only about $150 - $200. Trouble is, it’s about $1,500 for a day’s worth of labor to replace it due to German over-engineering, getting down to the point of removal, re-connection of multiple hoses, and after all that, re-assembly.

Mine is a different generation from yours, so I don’t know if your baby has that weakness or not. Still, I do love the mechanical durability.

Thanks!

Yeah, I dread the day when something comes up I can't repair myself. I haven't even tried to look at the engine (yet)! That's a first for me on a P-car!

I bought the 101 Projects book by Dempsey and am also on a Porsche message board with many owners who have a ton of knowledge and experience so feel pretty good about having some helpful intel.

Good luck with that coolant reservoir leak.....hopefully won't be too bad.

Oh....the color on mine is "Speed Yellow". :)

In 1963 a young jazz musician named Herbie was just beginning his career and spent his first royalty check on financing a new AC Cobra for $6,000 after a friend told him it was better than a Ferrari and the station wagon Herbie wanted wasn't cool.

It was the sixth Cobra ever built and it was his daily driver for many years. For perspective, Carroll Shelby himself owned the first one.

One night long ago, this car drag raced Miles Davis on the streets of Chicago and easily beat the Maserati that Davis was driving. In 1990 he would buy a new Ferrari and stored this Cobra saying it had become too valuable to drive. He actually went to his garage and sat down to apologize and explain to the Cobra why he bought a Ferrari, adding "at least it's not a Chevy!"

Herbie Hancock still owns this car and is the longest original owner of any Cobra at 61 years.

Pinball machine on B.a.T.......

This pinball machine is one of approximately 1,570 Twin Win models produced by Bally Manufacturing of Chicago, Illinois, in 1974. The two-player machine was acquired by the seller in February 2024 and features a back panel and playfield with NASCAR and Indianapolis 500 imagery, along with a skidpad, flippers, slingshots, pop bumpers, and stand-up targets.
