News Article: Bama and Texas Tech Coaches on UNC Shortlist

Just thinking out loud here, Coach.

Make the SS four years in a row at UNC, and you'll feel the heat of 1000 suns!

Stay at Bama, where you are just as closer to winning it all than all the rebuilding it'll take at UNC, and you are already the "best B-ball Coach in Bama history!"
All good points but UNC's NIL budget is reportedly 14-15 million and could easily be bumped to 20 million. In today's basketball climate it isn't nearly as burdensome as it once was to "rebuild". Go out and and get 5-6 of another programs best players and play ball. I have no doubt Oats has goals of winning NCs and at the end of the day he has to feel as if Alabama is giving him that opportunity. Hopefully Byrne can rally the boosters and corporate donors to put us in the same ballpark as the UNC's, UK's, and Michigan's or it is just a matter of time before CNO quits trying to do more with less and joins forces with the who's who's of NIL. I would hate to lose him but couldn't blame him if we aren't giving him that opportunity.

I don't think we are doing as badly as some think...

I never said we were doing bad. But the reality is more resources has always been and will always be a major incentive for a coach to make a move. Is the grass always greener? Absolutely not. But that hasn't stopped most coaches from jumping the fence at some point to find out. I think CNO has a chance to build a legacy in Tuscaloosa that will far outlive him on this Earth if he stays long enough. I'm just pointing out some obvious truth's that we need to be concientous of if we want to keep him with the good guys for the coming years.

I didn't mean you thought that.

That was the point of the article: some think there's a major gap between Bama and schools like UConn, UNC, or Kansas.

UK ought to be ashamed to not get a better ROI on $20 mil.

I don't think Oats' issue is salary, facilities or arena. I think it's pay-for-play money, and the loss of Holt because of money really really stung.

I'm seeing some suggestions of diverting resources from Football to Basketball. Which will mollify fans only if (1) Oats stays, and (2) football doesn't lose recruits because of money.

Let either of those fall the wrong way and you'll hear wailing and gnashing of teeth to the moon.

This is where Byrne earns his money, and I would want no part of his job. Thing is, I'm not sure anyone can make 2 + 2 = 5.

I think Pope is a dead man walking at UK.

He might get another year (I think UK is about to change ADs or something like that).

But, he doesn't look like the long term solution. Supposedly, CNO was offered the job before him last year.

IIRC, last year Dabasta to BYU was not even close for us.

How far off were we with Holt?

BYU has the Jazz's billionaire owner in their back pocket. It's one thing to lose the AJ's of the world but we don't need to lose the Holt's and Mouhamed Dioubate's of the world if we plan on keeping Oats long term.

KY paid MouD 1.2 million. I think he could have helped us some this year, but he wasn't worth that IMO.

I know Holt has a lot of buzz, but I don't know enough about him to know if he's worth getting in a bidding war over.

I think it's just a matter of time for UNC to pull the trigger on Davis.

They cancelled his version of "Hey Coach" radio show last night.

They are probably working out the package for him NOT to coach.

Rest assured, CNO will be on their shortlist. They probably have some bigger names, but he'll get a "call."
UNC probably waiting for us to lose before they fire the coach. It would be great and funny if we just keep winning.

If you change it to 2025, then that would capture a full year of recruiting. The 2026 one is recruits so far committed. Still, I'm not sure how accurate all of this is. On 2025 we come in at 31, Florida at 23, and Georgia State at 17?

Don’t think this NIL budget rankings capture the reality of what the schools actually have to spend.

It’s not that bama is way behind but it’s more that the others they have $5M or more want him. Do I know he is still annoyed about what happened this past off season and Holt? No but I know he was. That’s the nerve wracking part.

I think him coaching team USA is to help with the recruiting and alleviate some of that. CNO is an outward emotional guy so he may have only been temporarily letting out some frustration at moments that are there all the time. He hates losing so losing Holt for example could have been some venting.

As far as UK I wonder who got to make roster decisions. Didn’t seem like the type of team pope would want to fit his system so maybe he gets a year to pick his guys vs what they did last year. Also I agree big time Mo was not worth bidding over.
