Hey Tiders,
My name is Steven, and I'm graduating tomorrow night from Slidell High School(near N.O.). After that, I'm off to the Capstone in the University Honors Program. Even though no one in my family is alumni, it's only fitting that I be going there: my mother is from Pike County, her dad(grandpa) has had season tickets for years, and my dad loved the Tide and the Bear despite living in N.O. I've been going to games in B-D since I was 2, so I've been born and bred in crimson. Fortunately, I've received some scholarship money including a reward from the local chapter of the Alabama Alumni Association. I went the the scholarship banquet Tuesday night and had the pleasure of meeting the alumni. They are such wonderful folks who left me their business cards in case I have any questions or run into any problems along the way. They really comforted me in my decision to attend UA. I also had the pleasure of meeting the guest speaker, D-line coach Buddy Wyatt. Boy, did he get us up and ready for football season. I would like to ask any alumni if they have any favorite fraternity. I would love to know more about them in your opinion if you would be so kind. Thanks and ROLL TIDE!!!

Congratulations Bamafan. I'm sure you will have a great time, it's a fun campus. All I really know about fraternities is that you probally ought to stay away from DKE. You given any thought as to what your major will be?

Yeah, I'm gonna major in Health Care Management. I know for a fact I want to go in the business direction. I will most likely pursue an MBA and maybe a JD beyond that. Its funny you should say that about DKE, because one of the alumni told me the same exact thing. Roll Tide

Well I was in TKE for a short time and we were right next to DKE so we had a pretty good idea of what went on in their fraternity. They have a reputation for beating up on their pledges. If your going into Health Care Management then Dr. Davis is a good professer to take. I had her last semester in Intro to Health Care Management, HCM 370. I learned a lot in her class and she is a fair teacher who helps her students out by letting them do extra credit and the like.

I was a KA, but can tell you that times change and frats are different every four years. Theta Chi has always been good at Bama and many, many others such as PIKE.
Good Luck!

Just wanted to say hello to a fellow TKE. I'm MO# 550 from Tennessee Tech.

I've been to a bunch of fraternity parties down in T-town. It's all good!

Congrats- I would definitely recommend the Frat scene at UA- I was Pres of the Phi Gamma Delta in the late 90's (across the street from the Bama Book Store). Ask about old row vs new row- pledge old row. Ahhhh, the thought of pledges saving seats at BD, stirring Jack and coke with a shaker, dates in sun dresses- Good Times.

My son just graduated from UA Suma Cum Laude in Accounting. He's still there finishing his masters for one more year. He was president of ATO, the best fraternity for serious students who are also looking for a bunch of great guys who have a good time but stress excellence in academica and believe that the house is no place for alcohol.

His name is John, and if you E-Mail me, I will give you his phone number. His girlfriend is going to LSU and is from Baton Rouge. He takes 59 down that way qutie a bit.

Good Luck and RTR

I know you are asking about local chapters at UA, but I cannot help putting in my $.02.

I am also a TKE (MO#521) from Tennessee Tech. TKE is the world's largest social fraternity. Give it a look.

By the way congrats on the way things are playing out for you.

I also had scholarship offers to go to 'Bama. I am born and bred in Tennessee, but a hardcore 'Bama fan for life. I just could not justify the out-of-state fees, and TTU has a great engineering program. Besides, I ended-up meeting my wife at Tech, so no regrets. But good luck to you in your time at The University.

Way to Go BamafaninLA. As I mentioned in another post, my son is headed there this fall also. Unfortunately he didn't get any schollie money, so that sucking noise heard around Nashville is the sound of my retirement funds headed down to the Capstone!!
Like you he was indoctrinated early and went to his first football game when he was four years old. I hope your experience like his is great. He came away from our two visits there saying, "It just feels right".
We also lived in Slidell before he was born, so I know where you're coming from!! I miss fresh shrimp!!

Good Luck and RTR!!

Congrats! What I wouldn't give to be just getting ready to head to The University. IF you want the best parties and the hottest girls, you should definitely join a fraternity. I was a Sigma Chi while at UA. It was great while I was there and we had a blast. But, like 1 poster said, the best fraternity 7 years ago will probably not be the best one this year. My advice would be to go through open rush and see all the fraternities. The ones who you hit it off with will invite you out for drinks and you can then narrow down your choice. Congrats again.

Always nice to see fellow TTU grads. As I said in another thread, I was a victim of out-o-state tuition at BAMA as well. Sucks...

Steven:

Check out Alpha Tau Omega. My son, a Junior honors student in Accounting, is currently a member and has really enjoyed it. In recent years, ATO has regularly been ranked as having the highest GPA of any Greek organization on campus. In addition they have also received academic honors from their national organization. Many of their members are also actively involved in various campus ministries and service organizations. As a result the UA chapter has gained the reputation as a fraternity whose members are well rounded and active in the University community, but serious about academics.

Also, as noted in another post above, they have taken a strong and responsible stance regarding alcohol use. They enjoy the camaraderie, band parties, and trips just like a lot of other groups. However, the fraternity seems to have attracted a large number of guys who don't think you have to have alcohol in the mix to have a good time.

Check out their website at:

Best wishes for a great experience at the Capstone.

Hey, you might want to check out Theta Chi. My dad was a theta chi and we go to the house for lunch every home football game. The guys there are pretty cool and im hopefully gonna be a theta chi in two years. RTR
