Team - Games - FTs attempted

1) SURPRISE!!

Kentucky - 4 - 94
2) Arkansas - 4 - 91
3) VANDERBILT - 3 -68
4) Ole Miss - 3 - 67
5) Auburn - 4 - 65
6) LSU - 4 - 61
7) MSU - 3 - 60
8) Florida - 3 - 54
9) Tennessee - 3 - 48
10) UGA - 3 - 45
11) South Carolina - 3 - 35
12) Alabama - 3 - 32

Vandy, Arkansas and UK are averaging 22 - 23 FTs per game, Bama just 11. This number alone can oft make a difference between winning and losing.

Coming off a 5 FT day at MSU, Coach Grant better be prepared to sacrifice some composure and austerity and trip some refs if this trend continues early against Vandy.

Before you jump to conspiracy mode, consider the number of FG attempts too. We play a much slower game with fewer attempts. That will create far fewer FT attempts as well....

Yea but if you watch our offense, we are not that aggressive in attacking the rim. Even Coach Grant said we should push the tempo more. Pushing the tempo leads to more at the rim shots. And more takes to the rim produce more free throw attempts. So there is some legitimate claims here.

I bet we have more FG attempts in the paint (percentage wise) than most teams in the SEC (if not all of them) -- so not sure I agree that we don't go to the rim..... we just don't take as many shots..... It's a numbers game

Bama has now moved to 11th in FTAs - but against Vandy and UK, Bama shot 35 FTs, they shot 69. An additional -34 in FTA margin.

I wish that FTA margin was an official stat, think it probably should be - but certain Protected Programs are probably quite happy if these numbers are not talked about too much.

For the season, UK has 134 FT attempts, Bama 67.

So we've shot 35 free throws in 2 games and 32 in the other 17? Or do you mean the 67 is in SEC play?

Big FTA totals are a result of offensive style mainly, and to some degree, player ability. There's no conspiracy.

Yeah playing style is a part of it. Another part of it is when the refs make a call on one end but act like their life will end if they blow it on the other. I saw that happen a few times on Saturday. Games aren't being called equally. It's not a conspiracy. It's fact.

Someone has to be last. It might as well be the team that passes up decent shots and does not attack the rim while running the shot-clock down to under 5 seconds and forcing up bad outside shots.

The officiating of the UK game was okay but the Vanderbilt game was awful.

Our style of play does not lend itself to lots of FTA's. There is no more of an officiating "conspiracy" against Bama basketball than there is a "conspiracy" for Bama football. 99% of the time poor officiating is just a popular excuse for losing, in all sports.

You'll probably never see a game called with perfect consistency, and I'm sure UK fans would be quick to point out a few instances where inconsistencies favored us. You'll find a contingent in every fan base that thinks their team not getting the calls, and that contingent will grow when the team loses.

Regardless, the effect of a few missed/bad calls on a FTA total is fractional compared to the effects of system and player ability.

Team and individual styles of play and philosophy are components, as is officiating.

With a couple of post options, a penetrating point guard, and perimeter players who should be looking to be more aggressive with the ball ala Andre Steele, Bama should be getting to the line more.

But I think we have had some bad officiating. Against Vandy I think there was 5 or 6 block-charge whistles, and I think Bama lost out on all of them. And then against UK we did get 25 FTAs, but they still shot 40 - and critical whistles, as usual, went their way. If you are going to stick your whistle in a play and directly influence a game by calling minimal at best contact on Andre Steele against Darius Miller in the last minute, then you cannot swallow the whistle when Hankerson got hit on the arm by Davis.

I just shake my head at the fact Kentucky, without a real inside game mind you, has shot 134 FTs to Bama's 67 going into tonight. And shake my head that we played Vandy and Kentucky and tried to beat two top 20 teams while fighting a -34 FT margin.

South Carolina is last in the League in FTAs, lets hope they do not get a whole lot of home whistles tomorrow night!
