Bama Meat Pole...

Not sure who or when it started but I've got a video showing R. Patterson (#77) walking around the field after kicking the canes a$$e$ with the meat pole for the 92 season. He had a miami flag with him and he was taking bites out of it and spitting it on the field. I loved it especially since some of the loud mouth miami players had made fun of him. Justice was served!

Jump over to the Yell Crew site (left tool bar near the bottom under Affiliates)and ask them. I'd think, since they *revived* it a few years ago someone over there would know.

This is as much history as we were able to track down about the AYC Meat Pole...copied from the www.YellCrew.com website (which is in very bad need of a makeover and update).

The Alabama Yell Crew "Meat Pole" is a tradition that was started in the early 1970's by Shorty Price. Mr. Price was described as a very colorful character who bled crimson. Mr. Price would walk the aisles of Legion Field and Bryant-Denny Stadium with a pole carrying the pennant of that seasons defeated opponents to that time. Mr. Price was also one of the more notable characters in state politics, making several bids for governor of the state of Alabama.

The Meat Pole's presence was sporadic through the 1980's and the tradition ended entirely in 1993, making what was then its last appearance (complete with 13 pennants) at the NSF&G Sugar Bowl National Championship Game.

Finally, in 2002, the Alabama Yell Crew officially resurrected one of the more popular traditions of Alabama football. There are many superstitions that go along with the "Meat Pole" and all must be strictly observed.

Some of the superstitions include:

* No pennant may touch the pole before the victory is in hand at any point in time.
* All pennants are purchased in the off-season, if a team beats Alabama that pennant is destroyed.
* The Tennessee penant must have 8 people spit on it three hours before kickoff.

Great bit of history by PlayerUA. I thought I remembered a couple of years ago a thread about the Meat Pole, it's resurection and Shorty Price but couldn't for the life of me put it all back together. Thanks and much appreciated.

There will probably be a long line of Bama fans who would be willing to spit on the Tennessee pennant. :D

How in the world do they select the people who get to do the spittin'? Do people have to pay in order to be considered? They could raise a lot of money for a worthy cause if they did it that way.

when I was growing up and I started going to Bama games in or around 1971.

that's exactly as I remember it too.
I long for that old 70's Alabama Football feeling we used to have.

Oh, and I don't spit in public, but I would spit on the ut pennant.
Roll Tide!
