well, we know for sure now, that for the tide to win against good teams, they will have to beat the 8 and 9 man fronts. every team will jam the line and force our offense to go downfield or at least across the middle and sideline with accuracy. no team can survive one dimensional football. we have some big games coming up, and i would love to see a offensive game show for a change.

Re: bama needs to establish passing game

First we have to establish the run. then we will suceed in the pass. Look at the first quarter of the houstan game much less the first drive. the whole drive except one pass which was incomplete we ran the ball and got a td out of it. After that we came out unloading on passing. The passing game will be their as long as the running is which is more than likely considering ole miss running defense is last in the SEC.

Houston started to stack the box against us, which forced us to pass, rather than try and run on 8 defenders. Chances are, OM will play to stop the run right out of the gate. I wouldn't be surprised to see JPW throw 35+ passes. Being unable to execute against a D like UH's when they are daring you to throw has me very worried about UT, LSU (obviously), and AU. Until JPW dominates a game, I am afraid every team will load the box and force us to pass.

Where on earth did the idea originate that UH threw a nine man front against us? Most of the time, they rushed three with an eight man stacked zone. We ran against it with success for only one quarter...

sort of agree, but against LSU and TENN and AUB we cant just run over them with 8 in the box. We have to be able to pass in man situations and pick apart cover 2 and 3. QB is by far the most important position in the NCAA. We need our QB to be accurate and make good decisions. We'll be able to run the ball if we can complete passes, and more than just 2 yarders. We have to go down field! we have the receivers to do this and a qb with enough talent to accomplish this as well, he just needs to get out of this funk he's in and play ball
JPW can do it, and I'll be there yelling with support the whole time.

The point was the running game has not been consistent through a complete game against 3, 4, and 5 in the box. Not a lot of lanes to throw through if they dare you to run and you can't.

I think Ole Miss will come out playing the run, and we will run a play action pass to DJ Hall for 6 points on the first play. That is after Arenas or Lowe returns the kickoff to their 35 yard line. Then, when they continue to play the run, we will work the short side of the field and the middle to our tightends and make the occassional attempt at the deep ball. Thus, loosening the D just a little, then we will wake them up with some Coffee and rock them back to sleep with some Grant. Then, to add insult to injury, we will put Upchurch in and let him rush for 60 yds or so.

Chicken and egg. The pass can set up the run or the run can set up the pass, but in either case, you have to be able to succeed at the former before you can hit them with the latter.

I think the "tip off" theory has some validity because Bama doesn't seem to be able to run or throw effectively right now. This team is too talented to be getting stuffed on every play and never converting a 1st down.

Great teams can announce the coming play before running it...Bama needs to keep a defense off-balance and guessing in order to be effective. Right now, we don't seem to be fooling anyone.

Where ever there's BBQ, Bourbon & Football
You can beat an eight/nine man front with the run as well. When teams that put eight and nine men "in the box" means they are aligned inside both tackles. Which means the greatest resistance to the run is going to be running inside.

However, an "eight man in the box" alignment can be beat by simply running to the outside and off the edges. It forces the defense to "loosen up". A few toss sweeps to Terry Grant with the WR's coming down to seal the end and big Andre leading up field on the sweep (see Vandy game) will either force the defense into one on one open field tackling which means the chance for big plays by the offense or force them to loosen up the the middle and guard against the runs to the outside.

I believe Saban mentioned in his press conference that in the second half they were bringing blitzes from all different positions trying to load up the box.

I don't think it is any big secret that Miss is going to challenge JPW to throw the ball.
Yeah, and let's hope he gets that together, or Saturday may be a long day for us. In his defense, the O line had better block better than they have the last 3 games as well. Here's hoping it's been a good week in practice!!!

Hopefully JPW will hit a few early and get the d to back off. If he is unable to open the passing game up we could be in for a long day. At some point then CNS will have to consider at least trying GM for a while.
