Brief thoughts on the game...

It's going to be a long year. I'm not saying we won't improve, but don't expect too much from this years team. There's just not enough size or speed on this years squad.

Free throw shooting STILL sucks.

Crowd was disappointing...although I'm really impressed with my alma mater (Montevallo) they purple and gold showed up tonight and at some points the soccer hooligans got awful loud. The only time the home crowd seemed to make any noise was in response to a controversial call.

POsitive stuff.

Mal Moore was at the game. I was happy to see this. He sat about two rows back from me.

I really like Cage coming off the bench. He's a liability on defense but he was never out of position on the offensive side of the court and made some great passes.

Tha dance team is fine.

I'm also going to confess that I didn't pull for the Tide tonight, but I didn't pull against them. They were playing my Alma Mater and the Falcons needed all the help they could get. It really confused my nephew that I was clapping every time Montevallo scored...

well night all.

i totally disagree with the previous post. i'm not saying that we are going to win our conference.... but i thought they looked a lot better than our previous years teams. the defense forced 20+ turnovers (only scored 24 points off of that which i think needs to be improved), and 10 of those were straight up steals. WE WERE GOING AFTER THE BALL!!! the energy on defense was great. WE WERE GOING AFTER THE BALL!!! five players hit double digits. jamychal green had a good game, but just like last year got into foul trouble early. knox i thought has improved a ton from last year. to me free throw shooting was "better" and so was rebounding. i've gone to 75% of all the games in previous years and i think this is definitely a team that can improve off of what i thought was a good first effort.

(btw-- the attendance was better than a few conference games last year)

No way can I agree with that prediction. CAG cleared the bench before halftime, nobody played more than 23 minutes, and 10 guys played at least 14 minutes. Do you think that is the way he's going to manage the games that count? This was a scrimmage game, and nothing more than a chance for Coach to see everybody against a team that wasn't wearing crimson. Keep the faith, or perhaps more fittingly after the last few years, find your faith. The previous regime had the tendency to remain stagnant, without improvements, but CAG will demand much more, and the players will respond. I'm ready for it, myself.

I'm sure he will demand more and I expect to see improvement as the season progresses, but I just don't see this team doing great hings this year.

Maybe next year. I'll still watch every game and I'll still cheer. I'll use my season tickets. I didn't last year.

Defensively, Alabama did look better. Offense was a wash, but the quality of opponent makes that judgment meaningless.

Either way. We'll see. Maybe they will surprise, but I doubt it. I expect good things next year, but this year I just don't see it.

We just don't have the horses. The biggest guy on the team is 6'9. Alabama had a size and speed advantage last night. In which SEC games this year will that be the case?

Too early to tell about the season as a whole and obviously fair enough to the size comment (its not that we don't have any big guys, 6'9 is solid enough for college ball, its just a lack of numbers in big guys) but really don't get the speed comment. The one thing we've never lacked is athletes. Senario's an amazing athlete, Torrence is a kind of long glider but definitely not an un athletic kid, Brock is quick, Mitchell's a great athlete, Davis seems athletic enough, if anything because of our lack of depth inside we'll probably play longer stretches than most with a small, quick lineup.

This isn't the NBA, plenty of teams have success with what seems like no real big men. Villanova this year, for example, is going to rely on a freshman for their post presence and will likely go with four guards often - they're a favorite to return to the final four.

Also, for an example with less talent, think of Bruce Pearl's first UT teams. One of their top couple stars was Dane Bradshaw (...let that sink in), and they got to the the tourny's second round.

As for the speed issue, who is it that is so much faster? UK is the only SEC team that comes to mind with Wall and Bledsoe, but beyond that it's kind of a wash.

Didn't say anyone would be faster. I said we wouldn't an advantage in both size and speed in the SEC.

Listen I'm excited about the season, but I don't have my hopes up. I see a decent year. Compared to the last couple of season, I'm okay with that.

Me too, but after hearing Grant talk, I'm gonna keep the Kool-aid flowing and I will expect him to win the west this year until it's apparent that it's not going to happen. ROLL TIDE, BROTHER!! PEACE!
