Battered Quarterback Syndrome: A Discussion on Ty Simpson

Ty's a good man. He needs 100% of our support.

Really people, there's nothing wrong with this team. We are progressing. We made the playoffs this year (didn't the last year).

DeBoer's a great coach. Saban is no longer here. We are in a new era where there is way more parity than there's every been.

If the NFL was condensed to a 12 game season, there's no way someone could tell me that 10-2 is not a stellar season.

We have a great shot at making it to round 2. Then we get Indiana. We can beat them too.
There are a lot of things wrong with this team.

This is a good team, but no where near a great team.

Lots of areas that could use a lot of improvement, from coaching to executing on the field.

And Jam is the experienced RB.

Can't find it, but watch Daniel Hill on that false start call when the defender knocked Ty on his butt after the whistle. Hill stepped aside and let him hit Ty.....probably thinking he would get penalized if he blocked the guy, not realizing he was giving up a free shot on his QB.

One other thing about the idea of benching Ty is that it probably destroys his draft position next year.

Maybe he has played himself out of the first round already, idk, but benching him for the playoffs would seem to pretty much put a nail in that coffin.

It could even put a nail in a second round phone call for all we know.

I get what you are saying, and everything I know about Ty is that he is a great teammate and a great presence in the locker room. I haven't seen anyone disputing that.

I won't comment further on whether or not a QB change should occur because there is no sense in beating a dead horse over something that will most likely not happen. But I will say that in regards to him earning the right to start the playoff game and potentially making a change if he doesn't play well, I felt that way going into the SECCG. Also, while I hope Ty is drafted this April or next April as high as possible, the coaching staff has an obligation to the team and not the individual.

I posted this in Jess' summary thread, but I think it deserves its own thread. Something for y'all to consider.

I watched the great Kurt Warner during the Greatest Show on Turf years while I lived in St. Louis. He lit up the field like a pinball machine the first several years. But, Mike Martz had a tendency to leave him back there with no RB blocking help and he got creamed as he threw. Repeatedly.

Eventually, he got Battered Quarterback Syndrome. And was replaced and, eventually, moved to Arizona. He took them to the Superbowl there and was elected to the Hall of Fame later.

I think that's what we're looking at with Ty.
There is something definitely going on with Ty.

I don't recall seeing Ty changing many (if any) plays at the line of scrimmage in the SECCG like he was doing the first half of the season... 🤔

I guess a whistle is like a stop sign now, it is just optional for some players. If Hill would have stepped in to hit the guy, would the penalty been called on Hill? Because they sure didn't call it on the Georgia player.

It seems teams are baiting Ty into switching and then they switch, knowing what's coming.

We also are going to have to go more heavy on pass pro and start keeping a TE and RB in to block more...maybe even 2 TEs!

And whatever is ailing Ty, we've got to keep him from taking so many hits.

I think it's safe to say that if he's not significantly better against OU this time around than he was against AU and Georgia, we will have an early exit from the CFP.
They've been keeping rb's and te's in for blocking. There's been a lot of max protect...and either the rb whiffs or the te whiffs or the right guard whiffs or the left tackle whiffs...every play its another. Not often the same guy play after play...but every play SOMEONE misses.

We aren't going to see a QB change unless Ty gets hurt to where he can't play at all.

Grubb is going to have to adjust his calls to give Ty some confidence, break some tendencies. Ty is going to have to stop changing the call every down. The defenses are baiting him knowing what he will likely audible into.

Cole Adams is a sure handed receiver and has some running ability after the catch...maybe we can create a comfort receiver for Ty...who runs short routes over the middle and close to the LOS as an easy out if pressured...its been used a lot to great success...Clemson did this to us and killed us with their possession receiver...if it would reduce his anxiety ( if that is what it is) then why not put in a package...it would also be a wrinkle we haven't shown...

Allow me to remind you that we rushed for -3 yards Saturday.

There's LOTS wrong with this team.

When you're having a lower back injury, it affects the way you throw the ball.
That would also cause the "mental issues" that we are seeing. There's a lot of nerves down there. Was this when Ty ran into Proctor and then got sacked on the first play of the second half against Missouri when he fumbled? The drastic increase in fumbles since that game can also likely be attributed to this.

Oof, that was a nasty hit.

Jam completely whiffed on his block there.

yes, Jam did, but some of that is also on Carroll. He blocked no one on that play and was so focused on the edge guy that the TE had handled pretty well, he never even looked at the guy coming right into his gap, that Jam then tried to pickup.

“What’s happening to him is a crime against football — a blatant betrayal of everything this sport stands for. How can people be so cruel? Criticizing a young man who’s carried this entire program on his back, shows up every single week, gives everything he has, never asks for attention, never blames anyone — just tries to win for the Alabama Crimson Tide?

To me, Ty Simpson is one of the greatest quarterbacks this game has ever seen — and instead of tearing him down every time the team struggles, people should be standing behind him.”
