Battered Quarterback Syndrome: A Discussion on Ty Simpson

Yes... The coaches have a big responsibility to call the plays to get the ball out and get the ball snapped earlier so that they can't tee off the game clock. We can't leave Ty back there to get pummeled.

Ty's dad was quoted this week about Ty holding the ball too long looking for a big play when he needed to just get it out to the first open guy he sees. I think Ty has been part of the problem as well. He keeps looking for the deeper bigger route when the blitzing defense isn't affording him that type of time.

I definitely think Ty is the starter... No question there... I hope he is on fire.

He needs to get the ball out fast to the first open read and we need to get the plays snapped earlier on the clock and not confuse everyone with changing it so much. Gonna be LOUD.

i was wondering about that. i had 3, 6 months apart and they said no more and i ended up having surgery
Yeah, I’m surprised his face isn’t super puffy at this point. I’m not sure I’m going to be able to enjoy watching him play knowing this. Looking through my fingers every drop back. He must be a dang good salesman to talk his mom into this

Funny you say this, I’m watching the SEC CG right now, and the first qtr INT. Ty did the unthinkable . Threw late over the middle. I even took a screenshot for mental notes . These are mistakes he wasn’t making early in the season. it was look off, zip balls gone. That said, formations/routes aren’t his friend either. In this pic, this is mid play, he has plenty of time, the Oline is doing a good job so far in the game. You have 3 receivers still within a few yards of each other , 10 yards downfield. , and a crossing route running left to right into that receiver grouping. In this pic the ball should be out about now throwing between the hashes to Horton crossing, . But Ty waits until Horton completely crosses and throws to the right hash marks into the group of DBs instead of the open field . IMG_1279.jpeg

The only thing about Russell is that he is a true duel threat. So if you wanted to run the QB a little more re RPO or straight QB run he would be an option. I think Ty could also do this but he is apparently more beaten up.

Great grab there. Yeah, the ball should have been thrown to where the ref is at the exact moment of this screen shot. If so, it's a big gainer and "could have" totally changed the momentum of the game.

The only thing I'm thinking Ty might have been thinking is possibly hitting RW on a deep post route (about where the deep ref is) but by the time he decided against that and came back to Horton he was no longer "open."

But Ty's dad's point is, Horton is probably the 1st read and he should have just hit him for a 20 yard completion. It was the easy/open throw in this progression.

What are we talking about here?

I have no doubt that Ty was the best of the three and absolutely was the clear choice as the starting QB this year. I also agree that he should start the game tonight.

The only point I’m making is that a potential NFL QB with three years in the system should be a viable option if the starter is debilitated.

If we’re facing a hopeless situation at halftime, there’s no reason not to see what the next guy up can do.

I’ll honestly be shocked for us to make a move at QB no matter what the scoreboard says at half.

Barring a really bad injury we are going down with who we brought to the dance.

I agree that we ideally should have both Mack and KR ready but we don’t.

We have had so many nail biter games this year that we never really had an opportunity to get them real good playing time vs quality SEC competition.

Once Ty injured his back we probably should have found a way to get the other guys a few series a game just in case but it didn’t happen.

It’s possible I suppose that either guy could come off the bench and save us in the 2nd half but it’s more likely just throwing either guy to the wolves vs a very good OU defense.

Tua was a once in a lifetime player and what he did vs UGA in the 2nd half in 2018 as a TF just wasn’t normal.

Hopefully Ty feels a bit better and we protect him better tonight and we won’t have to wonder about what ifs.

Agree, and using the Tua example, not only did he offer a totally different ability to stress the defense, but he also had played alot of minutes that year in relief in blow out games. We essentially knew what we had and then we had heard the reports of him annihilating the defense in practices that year.

And, unfortunately, what we've heard about Russell from practice reports is he "isn't ready" to be that kind of game-changer at this juncture.
