In his fall address to the faculty/staff today Dr. Witt said that he expects a cut in state funding for the University again next year. However, our aggressive out of state student recruiting will continue to generate more tuition income from those out of state students. Our football team's success this year is helping our national student recruiting efforts and he expects our post season bowl income to provide even more profits for our athletic department. (estimated BCS payout to be $17.5 million). Dr. Witt said he thinks the ticket demand and the financial position of the athletic department will allow them handle the bond debt for BDS expansion next year. I would assume the BOT will approve that request.

I was talking to a couple of friends about this at work earlier this week and we were speculating the next expansion would begin in the next year or two.

Thanks for the update. Great news! I can hardly wait to see the stadium enclosed.

Oh I'm sorry...I thought it was the 12 or so percent increase in MY tuition.

I hope those extra 10-12k fans enjoy what my tuition money paid for...which, by the way includes cuts to staff and University programs...wait...cut staff...but we'll have all this extra money...

Does any part of tuition go to the athletic department? It was my understanding that the athletic department was completely self-sustaining without any funding from the academic interests of the university.

I'm pretty sure you're right. In fact, I think some cash from the AD goes towards scholarship funding...

No doubt. You can rest assured that Alabama Football is not costing the University 1 red cent. In fact, without the athetic department, tuition would likely be much higher. For example, my bosses son is going to Lagrange College in Georgia, and the total cost of on campus attendance is over 27,000. They started a football program in 2006, but the program is not a money maker, at least as of yet. This would likely be the result of what UA would be like without the money the AD brings in. The expansion will pay for itself.

The only thing coming from the academic side is ticket demand from students and faculty. The athletic dept. funds itsself and usually contributes $1 million to the General Fund.

Well...I can't recall the exact number, but I believe the 1988 stadium capacity was approximately 70,123 or so (prior to the 1987 expansion, it was 60K). We've added more than 20,000 seats since 1988 and have had no problem selling out the stadium. Given the current Tide Pride waiting list, I don't think we'll have a problem maintaining our sell-out streak.

The recent cuts in state funding have NOT required a reduction of faculty and staff or University programs. The necessary hiring of faculty/faculty has actually increased to meet the demands of the growing University. The shortfall created by the cut in state funding has been mostly covered from delays in scheduled maintenance of facilities and the tuition increase. The growing number of out of state students (which pay 3 times the tuition of in state) has helped increase the total tuition income pool. During this period of growth the average class size has remained the third lowest of all the SEC/ACC public schools. The test scores of incoming freshmen have increased during this period of growth. It will become tougher and tougher to get into school at the University in the next few years. There wil be more applications for fewer spots. The success of the football program gives us greater national exposure and helps student recruiting.
The budget of the athletic department is completely separate from the operating budget of the University. As someone has correctly pointed out, the athletic department actually donates money to the University from their profits. Certainly the success of the athletic department benefits the University financially and in student recruiting. All of the above make it financially feasible to enlarge BDS. It makes good business sense.

If we'd just 'shrink' the size of our seats to match the viles, we'd instantly add 5000 or more seats.

Just like Nick's salary the athletic department at The University of Alabama doesn't cost taxpayers or you as a student one cent. Relax, go to a game and enjoy the experience of being on the most beautiful campus in the country. Enjoy the days of cool breezes blowing across the quad and the colors of the leaves changing. You are truly in a wonderful place at a wonderful time to be there. God I miss being there.

Welcome to LIFE, where your money gets funneled to things and people you may not have any investment in whatsoever. Feel resentful? Wait til you have a steady income and get the privilege of paying REAL taxes.

Now why'd you have to go and bring facts into the discussion.

Excellent post Sir. He/she will understand as the years go by. I guess we all felt that way when we were there. I know I did, but at the same time I was just thrilled that I could be there.
