Behaviors that drive me crazy.

I suppose everyone has them. Here is one behavior I really do not appreciate:

Parking in the pick-up zone at the airport. I fly into Dulles a lot. Dulles has a cell phone lot. If you are going to pick a passenger up, once you get near the airport, you can park there until your passenger is standing by outside the airport. Instead, tons of people drive to the passenger pick up area and just park and wait for long periods of time. Then, others have to double park, and then sometimes triple park. This gums up the works and it delays everyone. Rude, illegal, and selfish. I wish people would not do this. Park in the cell lot, wait there, and once your passenger has landed, secured luggage, and is standing by outside the airport, then you can drive forward and pick them up. It takes 2-3 minutes to drive from the cell lot to the passenger pick up area.

Here is another.
When I was teaching at Virginia Tech, I spent a lot of time on Interstate 81. A lot of tractor trailers shifted their routes from the I-95 corridor to I-81 to save on tolls. I-81 has a lot of eighteen-wheelers now. A lot.
Often times, in a 70 mph zone, one tractor trailer will be going 55 mph (hilly country). Another tractor trailer will be in the left hand driving at 55.0000001 mph. Thus, it takes miles and miles for one tractor trailer to pass the other. In fact, they are going at very nearly the same speed, so why not just drive at the same speed in the right lane?

When I get stuck behind one of these, I get in touch with my inner German: get in the left lane, honking the horn, flashing the lights, letting the driver know he should be in the right lane if going 15 mph under the speed limit.

They do not respond to such niceties on I-81.

In Germany on the autobahn, if you get in the left lane and you are not driving at 130-160 kmph, you will find a BMW on your tail giving you the German treatment. It works for them. It keeps the order, which is important to Germans.

My wife complains about the people in the employee parking deck where she works doing this. You’ve got a stream of folks trying to get in to punch a clock and can’t go park because some genius in an oversized truck trying to back into a sub-compact spot and gumming up the works.

Let me add to the Walmart scenario the folks who turn up a lane of slanted parking spaces and try to park in one going the other direction, then proceeds to make a 5 point turn to try and get into the parking spot.

Ever try to back one of those out of a *somewhat* busy parking lot?

To clarify......

I only do this when there's no other vehicles behind or in front of me.

Even if I have to wait a bit - drive around a bit. I won't hold others up.

I also tend to park way out away from others. Usually no need to back in. I just pull all the way forward into the front spot. Same as pulling into the gas pumps - move ahead so others can pull in behind.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but I think the problem isn't those who choose to back into a parking spot - even if they don't do it in one move.

It's those who do this - and many other things - in a way they creates an inconvenience to other drivers.

That covers a LOT of territory, for sure - but also cuts to the chase!

I'm careful not to create an inconvenience to others. My eternal gratitude to Mom and Dad for their guidance in this philosophy.....

It is a company policy for me so I have no choice, but I can do it in one move.

Here is another one:
Folks who bring toddlers into a sit-down restaurant and do not remove the child when it gets into a screaming fit.
I like kids. They mean there is a future for humanity. That said, toddlers sometimes get really upset and do not yet have the self-discipline and self-awareness to not scream in a public setting. When your toddler does get into one of those fits, it is, I believe, incumbent on the parent to remove the child until the child calms down.
Instead, I see parents completely ignoring a screaming child in a sit-down restaurant or other quiet public venue. That, in my view, is imposing on people around them.
Take your child out of the venue until the child calms down.

Weird, none of the airports in Orlando allow that - they have security out there and if you're not actively loading or unloading you're told to move.

I agree it shouldn't be necessary but it's a relatively simple fix.

Overall, all of these complaints fall under what @Padreruf said - we're living in a society, which requires that we think of others instead of only focusing on ourselves. Unfortunately, large swaths of people weren't raised to be considerate of their fellow citizens.

Everyone seems to do this in my new apartment. It is a very tight parking deck so I get it. I don't typically do it because I use my trunk a lot and need to get to it easily.

I also tend to park away from people because I don't want any idiots dinging my bimmer.

This reminds me of a friend who went to the gym regularly. He always got mad at the folks who would block the road waiting for a parking space close to the door to become available. Why not park far from the door and start your workout by walking?

I agree it shouldn't be necessary but it's a relatively simple fix.

At Dulles, there are police whose job it is to tell violators to move on, but (a) the number of people standing in the zone is enormous (right now, I'd bet that there are 100 cars standing illegally in the 1/4 mile long front of Dulles terminal) and (b) the police are not too motivated to do this job. They walk along a portion of the loading zone once every 10-20 minutes.

Start handing out tickets and I'd bet folks get the word.
