Re: Best Places To Eat At T-Town?

RTR91,
Broadway Pizza has closed. Qdoba has also closed.
When? They were open when I was on campus back in May. This saddens me. Broadway had amazing calzones. I'll miss that place.

Ha. I hate Egans, but I dare you to walk into the bar and tell the crowd there that they are emo.
well, THIS part of the crowd at Egans wouldn't know if he was being complimented or insulted!

and why all the hate for Dreamland? Granted, you don't want to go there on game days, but those are good ribs!

Re: Best Places To Eat At T-Town?

I think most of the best places are covered already. But I'm not about putting in my .02.

1. Nick's is fine. Their steaks are better after a Zombie, but driving home after one can be a challenge. As others say, if you are used to Morton's, Flemings, Ruth's Chris, etc. don't plan to be impressed, but you couldn't get the shrimp appetizer and iced tea at Ruth's Chris for what dinner and drinks at Nick's will cost you.

2. I think Archibalds is better than Dreamland, but if you've never been to Dreamland then go there for the full experience. Archibalds is take away. And it's not like anyone is saying Dreamland is bad.... But don't try to go there on game day. It's really a small place. That applies to Waysider as well.

3. Wintzell's is good for seafood in Tuscaloosa, though we snobs prefer the one in Mobile.

4. Fine dining. Depends on what you are looking for, too. Cypress Inn is actually a very nice setting, but if you are looking for a 5-star, linen table cloth, soup-to-nuts meal, you'll have to go to Birmingham.

5. Italian. This is no help but the board will come through. There is (or was last year) a nice Italian place downtown on the right not far from where they are building the new federal building -- a block or two before Greensboro. Somebody help with the name.

RTR91,
It seems like Broadway closed a couple of months ago. Qdoba closed last week. Seeing both close surprised me.
Evidently Cafe Venice's closing is now permanent since realtor signs went up recently.

I ate at Broadway the last week in April. I wonder why it closed. Qdoba doesn't make sense at all. It was never crowded, but it was always doing business when I went to get some food.

You're thinking of either Cafe Venice or DePalma's. Both good places (at least what I ate). DePalma's is still open.

On Waysider - I've never eaten there, but the people I know that do love it all tell me to eat there for breakfast only. They go as far to say that Waysider should be a breakfast only place. Apparently their other meals are no good.

Re: Best Places To Eat At T-Town?

Seriously bummed about Broadway and Qdoba. That was the best Qdoba I've ever had and lots of good memories to go with it.

RTR91 and I have torn up some Broadway and I'm really sad to hear they're gone.

Melina's (in the old Globe spot) looked shut down when I drove by on Saturday.

I was downtown and Cafe Venice was closed. I ended up at the Mellowmushroom. I ate at DePalmas back in the late 90s once. Thier pasta to me was too dry, neeed more gravy, haven't been there since. I don't eat as much pasta as I used to

The business that owns that complex is known for jacking up the rent pretty regularly... it is why Strip Teas shut down. Many believe that is what caught Qdoba.

As for Broadway, I believe there were some personal issues with the guy that owned it.

I do not like Mellow Mushroom. I've only been to the one in Tuscaloosa, but the service has always been super slow (even when it's empty) and the food hasn't always been worth the price IMO. Now, I have seen some interesting food combinations at Mellow Mushroom that I want to try, but the slow service has always turned me off there.

I understand what you're saying, but all the pizzas are made to order so it's going to take a while. I've always liked their food, and I play trivia there every Tuesday... which means I'm usually eating for free. ;)

2 words: DePalma's. Breadsticks.

I'll drive from Hoover for them. If you think Olive Garden is Italian....well...this ain't it.

Re: Best Places To Eat At T-Town?

I've always thought that service at Mellow Mushroom was slow because the wait staff took the restaurant's theme a little too seriously, if you follow my drift.

Two bars I'm really looking forward to exploring:

Alcove Tavern and Bo's Bar

Alcove is fantastic...

And even though I have friends on the staff at the Mushroom, I understand what you're saying. ;)

Re: Best Places To Eat At T-Town?

Gameday Bar BQ - Big Bad Wolves
Anyday Bar BQ - Full Moon
Pizza - Broadway Pizza off of Rice Mine
Tex-Mex - Qdoba on the strip
Sports Bar - Phil's
Newk's is very good. Their pizzas are good along with the chicken club.

Waysider is very overrated.
The wife loves Newks and its right there off campus. I live in Northport so I'd say:
City Cafe
Buffalo Wild Wings
Chucks Fish is excellent!
Desparados

Re: Best Places To Eat At T-Town?

It must have been a bad night at Cypress Inn. They are one of the most consistent restaurants in town. They have had the same ownership for years and Drew also owns the 15th Diner. Recently Cypress has taken over doing the special dinner events at the stadium in the Zone. It is an ubelievable improvement in the quality of dinners there and yes the serve the same muffins. I actually look forward to going to dinner events at the Zone now. A huge improvement.
Anyone remember when "C-o-c-k O' The Walk"* originally opened the restaurant before it became Cypress Inn?

*Had to hyphenate the first part of the name, due to forum auto-editing.

Re: Best Places To Eat At T-Town?

That whole chain has gone way down hill. I'm pretty sure I saw their stuff at a few gas stations.
I didn't even know if the chain existed anymore, but it was a pretty neat experience, if you liked fried catfish, since that was the extent of the menu. I always got a kick out of watching wait staff trainees flipping the skillet of cornbread at the tables.

I have a bone to pick with that business. During finals week, my girlfriend and I parked in the parking lot and walked over to Phil's for lunch. When I got back to my car, I had a boot on my tire. I knew the lot was one hour parking, but I did not know that if a person parked and then went off the premises a boot would be placed on his/her car. Four minutes after parking, the boot was placed on my car. I had to spend $50 to get it off. Talk about mad.
