Bham Bowl = Bad Idea

Bad for whom? ESPN? Definitely. College football fans? Nope, you don't have to watch. The city of Birmingham? Some additional tax revenues so maybe a good thing. Will it fail? Of course, but the city must take from the game what it can get.

There is absolutely no reason this wont be successful. Mobile's Bowl has been successful and that's with teams with even LESS name-recognition than the Birmingham Bowl will have. Yes, I said LESS. CUSA vs MAC is successful in Mobile... CUSA vs BE will be successful in Birmingham.

People also seem to be conveniently forgetting that Birmingham had bowl games for some 23 years ... TWENTY-THREE YEARS. It may not have been the most important bowl out there, but it was clearly successful... successful enough to warrant a bowl for 23-straight years. The ONLY reason it was discontinued was to make room for the SEC Championship Games which soon left to Atlanta.

Birmingham deserves a bowl and it WILL succeed in Birmingham.

I'll bet that next years GMAC Bowl which will pit Northern Illinois vs. Louisville (i have no idea) will have more fans than the Birmingham Bowl's UAB vs. Rutgers game.

BB,
Help me out. I'm not familiar with those 23 years of bowls. I was thinking more like 10 years.

why dont we get 59 bowls games so that 118 of 119 teams can go no wonder we cant have a playoff

You couldnt have Northern Ill. vs Louisville in a MAC vs CUSA matchup. Know why? Because Louisville has been gone from CUSA for over a year now. There is, however, the possibility of a Louisville-Memphis or UAB-Louisville game in Birmingham.

As for those years, you're right... I looked it up. Birmingham started hosting a bowl game in 1977 and stopped hosting in 1990. Still... more than a decade of bowls.

Don't forget that B'ham had some really top notch bowl games too! Also, don't forget that Birmingham has supported EVERY SINGLE Pro and Semi-Pro football team that we've been fortunate enough to get. Our only problem is that the other cities who got them didn't support them and the leagues went dead! If there is football involved, the City of Birmingham WILL SUPPORT IT!

Finally, there are about a million people in the greater B'ham area and over 1.5M within easy driving distance! All we need is 35K to 40K to be EXTREMELY successful and with the game being Dec 23, I am betting a lot of people will attend, just for the heck of going!

Absolutely. People always say Birmingham cant support things outside of Alabama or Auburn football and try to point to certain pro and semi-pro football teams. What people dont realize is that those LEAGUES failed... not the Birmingham franchise. Birmingham, in each of those pro and semi-pro leagues, has had among the best attendance. Birmingham cant help it if the leagues fail... Birmingham itself supports it. I think some of these Mobile people are being blindly jealous. Most of the people knocking this bowl are either rural Alabama folks or folks from Mobile. Everyone I've talked to so far around here (Birmingham) is excited about it. Lay off, haters.

Just a question of whether this bowl can attract the high-powered offensive teams that the GMAC bowl.

I am not sure the matchup that the Bham bowl game gets will get those teams thus I doubt attendence is near that of the GMAC bowl.

OrleansDawg . This is a little off subject but is the Sugar Bowl going to be back in New Orleans this year ?
Heard talk around the office today , that it was not ?
Just wondering . I really like it when Bama plays in New Orleans , fun -fun-fun . Oh those New Orleans Nights !

Yes, it will be.

The areas around the Superdome are 100% fine

Hotels are coming back just great and the more time, the better the city is getting

The Superdome itself is basically back to its normal self with a few more additions.

Well I can't believe they are actually adding more bowl games. They are now even lowering the standards to go bowling just so they can add more bowl games. But I do have to say it will be pretty cool to have a bowl game in B'ham. And if they are some decent teams going to this bowl game then I might actually attend.
