Belgian man whose body makes its own alcohol cleared of drunk-driving

A Belgian man has been acquitted of drunk-driving because he has auto-brewery syndrome (ABS), an extremely rare condition whereby the body produces alcohol, his lawyer has said.

Anse Ghesquiere said on Monday that in “another unfortunate coincidence” her client worked at a brewery, but three doctors who independently examined him had confirmed he had ABS.

People are not born with ABS but can develop it when they already have another intestine-related condition. Patients can present with symptoms consistent with alcohol intoxication such as slurred speech, stumbling, loss of motor functions, dizziness and belching.

but he still was impaired
I was just saying that if he had a medical condition and was impaired without knowing he was impaired he is not guilty of a crime. And if he can be treated then he should not be prevented from driving. If he is noncompliant with treatment and/or continues to have recurrences then I agree he should be prevented from driving or have to prove he is not intoxicated prior to driving.

There breathing devices which interlock with the starter and are sometimes ordered by courts in this country. I'd be willing to bet Belgium has them...

Not sure whether this belongs here or in the Florida threadthread :giggle:
Snakes discovered in passenger's pants by TSA at Miami International Airport
According to TSA, the reptilian discovery took place at the Miami International Airport on Friday.
Photos taken at the airport provided by TSA show two slender pink snakes outside of a small camo-colored bag, after apparently being pulled from the passenger's pants before they were able to board a plane.
It was not immediately known if the snakes were the passengers pets or whether the person was simply trying to transport them out of the city.
