Question: Border crisis looming, what should be done?

I'm about 60 miles from the US-Mexico border. The closest POE to me is Nogales in Arizona. The issue we're having here is the surge in illegals has left all of our resources drained: Our shelters are full, local food supplies have dwindled and federal relief comes with so much red tape that it's almost useless in a sudden crisis.

This surge isn't due to economics either, there's a war going on across the border between cartels for human smuggling routes and entire towns there are emptying out to avoid the violence. It's why we should consider doing what the cartels fear most, offering up US military resources to combat them directly. Mexico has been historically opposed to that but we could sell it as a joint operation, we've had plenty of those with law enforcement there in the past.

- The cartels fear that option so much the Sinaloas actually did cut off the supply of fentanyl to this region. Within two weeks half the homeless population disappeared in Tucson.

Thanks for the closeup viewpoint. So those are mostly Mexicans where you are, rather than Central Americans. I think most of us are just disgusted by the lack/failure of action on the part of Congress, particularly the House. It's obvious that they don't really want a solution...

Of late it has been trending more Mexicans than not, but it's always a mix. I've seen Chinese, Ecuadorians and Nicaraguans in the past 2 weeks or so.

Is fair to say this is happening due to drug warlords warring up and South and Central America?

I appreciate the upclose viewpoint. I do believe classifying the drug cartels as terrorists was one of the only good ideas the Trump admin had if it opens up more resources to combat them.

Also, I find it utterly appalling for an elected official, Governor Abbott, to say we are doing everything we can to stop them from crossing over short of shooting them...

We are all doomed when this viewpoint spreads to other issues...

I think a mix of cartel, political and gang violence is always an issue driving Central Americans to migrate north, but the most notable thing of late is the cartel violence just across our border in Mexico that has emptied out entire towns and driven people north.

On Friday night, Border Patrol identified six migrants in the Rio Grande who were in distress near the park, known as Shelby Park, Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar said in a statement Saturday. Federal agents, Cuellar added, unsuccessfully attempted to contact Texas state officials about the emergency by phone. Then, when Border Patrol agents went to the park and asked to be allowed to render aid to the migrants, they were denied entry, according to Cuellar.

"Texas Military Department soldiers stated they would not grant access to the migrants — even in the event of an emergency — and that they would send a soldier to investigate the situation," Cuellar said, noting that Mexican officials recovered three bodies on Saturday.

"This is a tragedy, and the State bears responsibility," he added.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press, said Cuellar's description of the events was accurate. In a statement Saturday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Texas officials obstructed Border Patrol's attempts to rescue the migrants on Friday.

When trump is again in the Whitehouse, we can point to this mess as a contributing factor.

There are many Americans who don't understand why we are letting so many people into the country illegally......when we have a legal process to do so.

Isn't that the same as cutting in line?

I don't blame people for being upset.....

The problem is created by the Biden administration following the law. There is no interest in reforming the law by the Republican House for the obvious reasons...

In hindsight..........I think there are many Americans who are now questioning the wisdom of the 3 Executive Orders the president signed on his first day in office that deal with immigration law/policy, given what we see now on the border.

The orders aim to reform the U.S. immigration system and roll back previous policies, including by creating a task force aimed at reuniting children who were separated from their families.

And then 3 months ago.........

I'm not an expert on all of this - just sharing my opinion of how the optics may be coming across to much of the country. And is why the president's approval ratings are so low right now.

I'll also add........given the lack of effective communication to the country on this issue......it doesn't seem like Public Relations is a strong point of this administration.

Is it a political football? Of course. And so are many other issues facing the country.

Which is why the president needs to get in front of the camera and speak to the people and explain what's going on. Instead of just pointing to the MAGA cult every time something goes wrong....

It's like blaming the officials when you lose a game. Weak.....and not what a true leader does.......

Trump surrogate Marjorie Taylor Greene says she “can’t wait to see” Trump enact his plan of mass detention camps for immigrants, rounding up millions of Latinos

I didn't hear her say the word "Latinos".

Who put that in there? :D

Here's what she actually said:

“We have to fight for a secure border, and President Trump will do that, and he will start mass deportations on day 1,” she said, to roaring applause. “And I can’t wait to see it happen.”

I am sure we probably aren't doing everything we can to deal with the influx. At minimum we could at least mobilize a mass humanitarian aid project like we did for the Palestinians, we didn't need Congressional Action to do that. Deploy the Red Cross to the local air bases along the border. Show these people getting treat humanely while Texas wants to do nothing short of shooting them or letting them drown.

But the Dems inaction is outshines the callousness of the Republicans yet again.
