congrats on all your kids' achievements. I love seeing all of these!

OK, I"ll bite, too.

Older daughter was selected for and attended UT Girls State. Was awarded the UT American Legion scholarship and is a finalist for the national scholarship that American Legion awards. Awarded a full ride to Weber State. Also attended UT Governor's Academy last week as 1 of 30 kids in UT to do so. Awarded a full ride to Southern Utah University.

She toured UA on Monday. She absolutely LOVED it. They treated her like a 5-star recruit and did a 1-on-1 private tour of campus and multiple 1-on-1 sessions with her. It was pretty awesome. Only thing better is if CNS had shown up :D Should have a 5-year full ride at UA if she selects UA. She and my wife did a 5-mile run around campus afterward and I think that solidified her awe of how beautiful the campus is. She had not been on campus other than gamedays and seeing it in all its non-gameday glory was pretty special.

We toured the northeast elite schools during spring break so now she has a really good comparison as to what each offers (and costs). She will be doing some virtual tours online at other schools this week and next. But UA is now very much in the running, so I'm a pretty happy papa. She very much loves Bama but until now wasn't sure if she wanted to go to college at UA.

Got her AP scores yesterday for the 2023 tests and had five 5's and one 4. Overall, she now has seven 5's and two 4's. She'll take another 4 APs this year. If she goes to UA, she could start almost as a junior based on the credits those scores have earned but it will depend on her selected major (Aerospace or ChemE interests right now so some may not be used). She spent all day yesterday looking at how those AP course credits would fit into her anticipated academic map. She's excited about the prospects. If she were accepted / goes to an Ivy, pretty much none of those APs get used other than having helped her get in. But, given they only have 3-4% acceptance rates now, it's great for her to know that UA is now a possibility with fantastic options & opportunities.

Right now she's #1 in her class. Fortunately, she's much more like her Momma than her Daddy. She's worked incredibly hard to get to this point and it's so rewarding to see her start reaping some of the benefits from working hard and doing well.

I absolutely love this! I see far too many dull children who have no interest in anything. They have no idea or care that they are setting their life's trajectory in high school. To read that your daughter has grand ambitions and the skill to realize those ambitions makes me very happy. Congratulations on raising an incredible kid! :)(y)

Thanks. We've always tried to provide opportunities for her to do a wide variety of things but have consistently told her that God gave her a big brain and it was her responsibility and obligation to actually use it wisely. She's heeded that advice most of the time. I told her if she gets senioritis this fall she'll be enrolling in the local community college next year instead of Harvard or MIT (or Bama) :D

I teach college juniors and seniors. Most are still clueless about life and what they want out of it so it's still sometimes surprising to have a 17yo who has a plan for 10 years from now and has written it down :)

This also tells me a lot about you and your spouse's parenting --congrats! I have seen far too many parents who tried to be their child's "friend" rather than their parent. Never works...NEVER WORKS...usually the child winds up in trouble and the parent is clueless as to why.

Decades ago heard a child psychologist say (to the effect) -- "Choose when you want your child to hate you. If you discipline them when young, they will hate you then but love you when they get to be 15. If you fail to discipline/direct them when young, they will hate you when they hit 15." I have seen this confirmed in children in my own extended family, churches, and friends.

BTW, I have a nephew who is an art professor at Utah State. Let me know if you need anything from him. He is a RISD (BA) and Yale (MA) graduate...very talented artist. Big Alabama fan as well...

This is great stuff and I have had the exact same conversation many times! Congrats to her!

My boy got scores back this week too, got 5s in AP Physics Mech, AP Physics E&M, and AP Calc, 4 in AP Eng.

Man I just love this thread. I love reading about your kids. I get a little disappointed at some of the schools I have taught at because I don’t see the desire of most kids to do what is necessary to be successful beyond middle or high school. Reading about your kids, remembering how my child worked and handled school and the school I taught at in Tennessee gives me hope for the future because there are parents who are doing their jobs leading their kids. Keep up the good work and by all means, come on here to tell us about their accomplishments. They deserve to be bragged on.

Exactly. My wife and I have done pretty much the same thing. Encourage (but not push) Lily to play sports, try musical instruments, and (of course) pursue a rigorous educational path. It was a big factor why we moved to Florida and St. Johns County: the schools here are excellent with a wide variety of academies. We've stressed to Lily that if you want to have a good life and be in a position to effectively help people, you have to be a serious student. So far, so good. :)

congrats to your daughter!

my rising hs senior got a solid ACT score of 34 and has gotten 4's on her AP exams (chem, history, language and math).......she is starting the college app process in august......wants to go to auburn (i know, i know).......she LOVED the campus and some of her friends are already going there......she also toured UA (where I got my medical degree) and UGA (again, i know.....but that's where mrs rjtide went to college)

she's pretty much set on going to med school after undergrad.....follow in her dad's footsteps (makes me proud)......wants to be a cardiologist (EP subspecialty) and has been set on that for a good while now.

That's awesome. Congrats to her, as well! Dedication, focus, and brainpower are in great demand and, when utilized in combination, the result tends to be pretty awesome.

I told Olivia we would figure out a way for her to go to any school she got into (unless it was one of those weird Northeast private schools that nobody ever heard of yet tuition is more than Harvard :D ) ... EXCEPT Auburn. I won't prevent her going to Auburn, but not a penny of our money or 529s will go there - and that includes transportation to/from there. She knows I'm not kidding :D

You probably know this but for those that don't ... if your kid is in running for National Merit Finalist, Alabama gives probably the best scholarship package to finalists compared to any school in the nation. Combine NMF with a high ACT and they nearly make money just by going to school, can get all kinds of amazing opportunities, study abroad / int'l trips paid for, 5 years tuition, 4yrs room, books, etc. It's incredibly appealing.

My daughter in law finished her radiation treatments on Tuesday! She goes today, (Thursday) for her round of chemo. This is her second of fourteen treatments spaced out over three week intervals. She already has one complete round of chemo back in the winter. Our family desires your prayers and well wishes.

Great thread..... Proud of my daughter who has worked for a year now as an occupational therapist in the geriatrics wing of a hospital. I live in Belgium so the educational system is apples and oranges to the US system, but just note that she was diagnosed around 8 or 9 as being slow and that she would never catch up. Yet, slow doesn't mean unable or stupid so I spent a lot of time telling her that she just had to find what (compensation method) worked for her and that she would experience a lot of trial and error. She plowed through everything in her own way/ her own time and even had her thesis published when she finished her specialization in geriatrics. My son is about to start his third year in electromechanical engineering so also proud of him. I never talk grades because sometimes having say 55 out of 100 can be top notch. I know someone who finished their senior year in Chemistry with 67% and was accepted in all the top US schools to study chemical engineering, but he ultimately chose Oxford or Cambridge (Before Brexit).

If ever back, give me a private message and we will. Met several fans over my 29 years here--- one was a colleague 2008-2012 who grew up in Tuscaloosa so we celebrated some championships (small office and small world). I live between the historic center and NATO so I hear American English often walking around my part of the city and I've seen local cars with Roll Tide or UA stickers (possibly did an exchange at UA like my wife). I was even in front of my house back in the early 2000s and saw this massive late 80s/ early 90s American car pass with Alabama license plates.
