I wonder if he was really interested in Memphis or he was just trying to get more $$$ from Tennessee? Probably the latter.

I have to say that Memphis is better off. I am sure whomever they get will be better than Pearl.
well, Geoff Calkins of the Memphis Commerical-Appeal is saying the two TV stations that were reporting all this big money being offered to Pearl where indeed reporting false info. And yes, Pearl played it perfectly.

Pearl was the beneficiary of an incompetent AD and some fat cats from FedEx who are clueless about college BBall. Now they're talking about Baylor's coach. My alma mater is about to get their very own Shubose. Unfrigginbelievable. At least my beloved Crimson Tide has a bright future with CAG.

I'm sure the AD's around the league knew that these coaching moves would change the landscape and the salaries all around. It's just part of the business.

What Memphis should do is hire either Bob Knight or Nolan Richardson. They may be old, but it will buy them a couple of years until they can get a better more permanent head coach. There are slim pickings right now.

I sort of think he should at least make that much money just to have to work with Coach Summit. :)

Just to respond to an earlier point...

I don't think there is really any way you could ever see Memphis join the SEC, assuming that no current member leaves. Even if they get the facilities up to the level they would need to be, they would need to bring in at least one more team with them to even things out, and even so I don't think there's any way the SEC wants 14 teams. It often gets far too convoluted as it is with 12, and 14 would only further aggravate the problem.

Moreover, any move by Memphis into the SEC would encounter extreme resistance by both Ole Miss and Tennessee. The Rebels don't have much of a recruiting base as it is, and they cannot afford to give up any more with Memphis coming in. To a much lesser extent, the same goes for Tennessee, and they will still fight it. Even programs like Alabama, Vanderbilt, and Georgia probably wouldn't be too keen on the idea because they too occasionally get talent from Memphis.

I'm not necessarily saying I would be totally against them joining, mind you, I'm just saying as a practical matter it would never happen.

I don't know if it is a good geographic match, but the Big East would fit them the best. They are great in basketball, and it doesn't matter there how much you suck in football. The Big East already has twenty teams or something, so adding one more isn't going to hurt anyone.

how is Sean Miller still at Xavier?
A two million dollar buyout to start with, and none of the schools who could afford that were in need of a coach until this year. You had UK, Arizona, Alabama, and Memphis all in the market and those were programs who might not choke when his name was brought up. I could see Memphis and Arizona giving him a sniff since they are striking out so far. I always thought Az would give Mark Few a call but I guess he likes what he has with the Zags.

He may not be a big name but he's a darn good coach, just look at the turnaround job he's done at Baylor. That program was a mess when he took over and now they're highly competitive in the Big 12 and nearly won the NIT this year. Memphis could do a whole lot worse than Drew IMHO.

I may be off base but I did read an article somewhere that claimed that Miller was very happy at Xavier. He coaches the primo sport in a city that loves basketball and is fairly easy to recruit to, and from what the article said Xavier has bent over backwards to make him happy. Maybe he will eventually get frustrated if he sees that he can't get to the top because of where he is, but maybe not. Quite honestly he can go as far at Xavier as he can at all but a small handful of schools. If UK/UNC/UCLA/KU, etc ever call then he would probably answer. Otherwise, who knows? There is a lot to be said for being happy where you are.

I personally think Memphis is going to struggle in luring a "top flight" coach to replace Calipari. JMO.
Not surprised they didn't get a top notch coach but I'm still very surprised that they ended up promoting from within however. I thought they could have gotten someone.

A day after turning them down Miller has now accepted the job at Arizona. Very good hire for Arizona, especially after apparently striking out early on.
