Busch Gardens Williamsburg

I've been there a number of times

and it's pretty fun. Of course, like all those places, it ain't cheap. There is a water park just down the road a mile or two, "Water Country, USA", which is a REALLY nice water park. If you're going to be in the area a few days, you might try one of the bounce back passes so you can go back and forth.

Colonial Williamsburg is pretty cool, especially if you like history (which I do). It's pretty amazing all the restored Colonial buildings and there are a number of costumed re enactors running around the place. If you're going in the summer, I'll warn you, it's every bit as hot as Alabama, so bring sun screen, drink lots of water. Still, it's pretty cool. There is also a pretty nice outlet village in Williamsburg, so if you're married or have a girlfriend, they'd probably like that.

The College of William and Mary is on the edge of Colonial Williamsburg and it has some interesting old buildings. I seem to recall there are one or two that were designed by Sir Christopher Wren.

If you have time, check out Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement. It's not too far from Williamsburg, and very cool in it's own right.

If you have A LOT of time, there are a gozillion Civil War battlefields in and around Richmond. OK, a slight exaggeration but there are quite a few.

Anyway, I hope that helps. If you want to know anything else, let me know.

Busch Gardens has really good rides and shows. I don't even like going to shows at amusement parks and liked the shows at BG. BG is surprisingly clean for a theme park. You cannot go without riding the Alpengeist and Apollo's Chariott. Also worth waiting for is the Big Bad Wolf.

BG is a European themed, theme park. Each section of the park is supposed to represent a nation in Europe. The sections are England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, France and Italy. Germany has authentic German food and Italy has pretty good Italian. Ireland has good shows.

If you have extra time, you are not far from Virginia beach (about and hour). Water Country is a good water park. Check that out if you have time. You will find that Virginia is the state to live in if you love history. As pointed out already, you have Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, and Civil War battlefields.

There is a Naval base in the Hampton area that is home to much of the Atlantic Fleet.

I haven't been there for years bit if you are going to Williamsburg you should definately take an extra day to go to Busch Gardens. Good rides and the 'Old Country' can be interesting.

Do you have kids, I took my kids there a few years ago. They have 5 really good roller costers. My kids still talk about it If you are older and are not going with kids. Skip it and do the paid talking tour at Colonial Williamsburg [35.00 i think] It's very informative. You shold also go to Jamestown.

Have fun.

How long ago was a few years ago? BG seems to be doing a good job of adding more rides over time. They may not have many roller coasters, but the few they have are really stickin good.

Now if you get a chance to go a few minutes north of Richmond, go to Paramount's Kings Dominion in Doswell.

They have a lot of rides and a water park. Their shows aren't as good as BG's, their food is overpriced and is only ok, and the park is not as clean overall. The rides are more numberous and almost just as good as BG's.

I live in VA and have been to all of the places mentioned above. Agree with all the comments above, except that I'd rank King's Dominion way below BG. Spend an extra day at BG instead of going to KD.

Also, I don't think anyone mentioned the Revolutionary War battlefield at Yorktown. That is a fascinating place. As an aside, when we went there a couple of years ago we went on a guided tour. The tour guide, who was extremely knowledgeable, spoke with a Russian accent, though she was fluent and easy to understand. I asked a Park ranger about her, and he said she was a Russian college student majoring in U.S. history at a university in St. Petersburg, and was spending a year abroad at William & Mary. He said they put her in charge of the tour because she knew more about the battle of Yorktown than any of the Park Rangers! Pretty ironic.

Thanks so much everyone!!

We're buying week flex tickets that include Colonial W'burg, Busch Gardens and Water Country (maybe something else too). I had a bad experience @ Six Flags Over Georgia the other day and was trying to avoid a similar situation if BG wasn't worth it. Sounds like BG must be fun.

We were originally thinking there wouldn't be enough to do for a week, but now it seems like a week won't be long enough. Oh well. We leave Friday and can't wait.

Comparing 6 Flags to Williamsberg is a BIG mistake Busch Gardens is SO much better the rides are awesome as are the shows!! I went 4 or 5 years ago and had a blast!! Trust me it is worth going too, and the river dance show if they still have it is very enjoyable!
