Can McCarron play in BCSCG and still redshirt?

Clearly AJ is QB2 at this point, but we would like to redshirt him. I know that redshirt is based on % played out of entire season, but not sure of the details. If McElroy went down in the 1st quarter, could AJ play and still redshirt? 2nd quarter? 3rd quarter? 4th quarter?

If GMac went down (which is an extremely unlikely situation) I think CNS will be a lot more worried about winning the game then keeping AJ's redshirt, so he would definately go in. Plus, AJ's redshirt will be completely superfluous anyway. No way he'll be playing as a fifth-year senior. Phillip Sims will be a senior by then, and he'll probably start as early as sophomore year.

It's an interesting question. If I remember correctly, transfers, who had to sit out a year(like Colin Peek), are eleigible to play in the bowl game. I'm not sure about freshmen who redshirt...

I agree CNS would not hesitate to burn AJ's redshirt to win the NC. I also agree that there is a good chance AJ won't be here 5 years (though when was the last time a QB at Bama was good enough to leave early?). But it is more of a theoretical question. I'm just interested in what the actual rule is.

In this unlikely scenario that McElroy does go down early, I think you'll see Star Jackson and not McCarron. Not necessarily because Star is better, but Star has at least seen some game action this year. I don't see Saban throwing McCarron in a pressure packed situation like the national title game without him having played in a game yet.

Just my $0.02.

Exactly, Star has seen action this year and will more than likely get the nod. Let's keep McElroy healthy and we won't need to debate this.

I haven't seen anything published saying AJM is #2 qb. Has Coach Saban actually said that or did someone attending practice report that?

It depends on how well they can stop 22, 3, and 5. If those three guys can't be contained...it doesn't matter who we put out there. (See South Carolina)

But in reality...I think Star Jackson gets the job unless McCarron knows the offense better. I am guessing that neither would really have what it takes mentally to compete at that kind of level...but who knows.

Related QB question: Was Colt McCoy on the team in 2005 that won the National Championship? Just wondering how many of their currently players made that trip to Pasadena January of 2006.

There was a article earlier this past week with AJ stating that he was only 1 play away from playing. I believe the mods also said earlier that AJ had moved into the number 2 spot and if something happend to cause McElroy to miss significant time that AJ would be the go to guy.

Ok, I still don't understand this. How come there are posts every week asking about AJ coming in to play QB. First of all, we don't have to think of a scenario with Greg getting hurt. He's a tough athlete and he has an offensive line that is protecting him very well. So let the coaches worry about this.

Second, why does everyone assume that AJ is #2 in the rotation now? Has CNS mentioned this and I missed it somewhere?

Anyway, it just upsets me, it seems like there is a lot of Anti-Star Jackson debate out there, and it's sad.

But either way, GMac will play.

First of all, it's a hypothetical question. No one on this thread was dissing Star. The questions about McCarron have developed because AJ warmed up the 2nd team for the UTe game in October and, by most accounts, has been signaling in the plays ever since. I even read some rumblings, when GMAC was struggling, that AJ might get the call from the bullpen.

The original question of this thread was : "Can McCarron play in BCSCG and still redshirt?" I don't think so. I also agree with most on here, that even if Greg went down, Star would still come into the game as QB. CNS probably wouldn't throw a true freshman into the second half of the BCSCG for his first snap as a college player.

Three years ago I heard people say the minute Star gets on campus he would be the starter. Now I'm hearing the same thing about Phil. Speculation broke a lot of people.
Amazing isn't it.

The way I've heard some people talk about Sims, McElroy should step aside because Sims will be our starter next year. It seems every time we sign a hot shot QB people are ready to make him the starter before he ever arrives in Tuscaloosa.

McElroy has played very well this year and he's not turned the ball over much at all. I think any QB is going to have his hands full knocking McElroy out of the starters role next year.

JMHO, but I think in 2011 the starting QB will be McCarron or Sims. I'm looking forward to seeing them along with Jackson battle it out. I don't think McCarron and Jackson are just going to step aside and let Sims have the job. I'm glad that Sims will be enrolling early so that he can go through spring practice. It's going to be interesting to watch what I think will be McCarron and Sims in the future.

^^^^this^^^^

Greg isn't going anywhere. The QB battle will be for 2011. AJ is very talented and is by all accounts by the "ones in the know" on here is the #2 QB with a red-shirt so Star is mop-up guy. The battle for the 2011 job should be interesting. AJ has more practice time and is a top QB IMO....Sims is a yr behind him as far as being on campus, yet one of the deciding factors for Sims coming to BAMA is he ran a pro-style offense at Oscar Smith and didn't want to have to learn an all new system in college. It has been reported that Sims has the Oscar Smith 1600 play, playbook down pat. And the offense we run is virtually the same playbook, so he evens out the lack of a yr at BAMA IMHO. It will be very interesting to see who comes out on top in 2011, I imagine it will not be an easy decision for the coaches to make. You throw Star in the mix and well it just gets crazy. I don't know that there has ever been this much talent at QB on a single team in our long history.

To answer the original question - If AJ were to play in the BCSNCG, he would lose his redshirt. As for the article in the Birmngham News this week, I took it to mean that AJ had passed Darrah for the #3 spot in the rotation, not the #2.
