Can you kick a FG on 3rd down, miss, and get another try on 4th?

I believe that I once saw a team attempt a field goal on 3rd down in an overtime game. They were in the same situation Bama was in during the 2nd overtime against Ark. All they needed to do to win was to score. Instead of risking a turnover, they attempted the kick on 3rd down. The kicker actually missed the kick but, he had another chance on 4th down. He made the 4th down kick and . of course his team won. Has anyone else seen that?

I know most of the board is screaming "go for the throat". However, if CMS had already made the decision to kick and not try for a TD, and the option I described above is available, why wouldn'y he opt to do that knowing the problems Tiffin was having?

You can't kick it twice. Lining up for a field goal a play early gives you a second chance in case of a bad snap. Roll Tide!!

Re: Tell me if I'm wrong...

Once the ball crosses the line of scrimmage, the ball is turned over to the other team.

Now, if on 3rd down, a kick is blocked, the ball never crosses the line of scrimmage, and the ball is recovered by the offense, it would then be 4th down, and they would get another chance. Or, if there's a bad snap and the holder falls on it, you'd get another chance. But, if the ball crosses the line of scrimmage, you can't do it again.

Speaking of kicks...
Did anyone see the end of the Rams-Cardinals game today. St. Louis was punting with five seconds left. Arizona fair catches it; however, there is a penalty on Arizona. St. Louis declines it thinking the game is over because the game clock is at 0. But, by rule the Cardinals can elect for a free kick because the game ended on a penalty and it was declined. It would have been a 73 yarder, but then the refs allow the Rams to then accept the penalty and thus kneel the ball and finally end the game. Would have been funny to see the Cards kick it and make it.
