I purchased a car from CarMax around 4 years ago and would do it again.

In fact I only consider previously owned cars when looking to purchase. New cars are just too pricey IMO.

After the 5+ years that have gone by, anyone have any current thoughts about either one of these businesses? I've bought 3 cars from Driver's Way (the last one in 2010) and have never even visited a Carmax. Looking at buying another used car or two. If anyone has any recent experiences, please share. Thanks!

I'm typically just not a fan of buying from any kind of dealer. I always feel like I get better deals buying private party. Get a CarFax and have my mechanic inspect it, and that's done me well.

But I've only recently learned - CarMax has paid more for cars I'm trying to sell than I can get in the private market. So, if I'm selling, I take it to CarMax. If I'm buying, I search Craigslist.

But, I drive old cars. That might not work if you are looking at newer cars.

I usually buy either new or low-mileage used. The last one I bought was a 2014 Subaru Forester, which we flew out to Co. Spgs. to buy. We got a tremendous deal and the car was a complete redesign from top to bottom. Didn't make much sense to buy used on that one. However, the other vehicle is a 2011 Tacoma, which I bought from the dealer in Murphreesboro, certified. It had around 5K on it. I had looked at the same vehicle, 2010 model, with around 25K, at Carmax. Believe it or not, cash price, the newer truck was $1000 cheaper than Carmax's...

I also have a 2004 Miata, turbocharged and greatly modified, which I bought new. It's my "play" car, whenever I get to where I can "play" again...

A Turbo charger on that small car - must have some serious giddy up! I had a little Jetta with a turbo charger. Pumped out ~200 hp. Made that little car feel much sportier than it really was.

We have gotten 4 cars from carmax in the past 8 years. There is a big location close to us and it is always only a one day deal. We have also sold/traded in cars to them.

The Last time we dealt with them was last year when I got my SUV, that I have now. We actually had a different car/model and brand initially. After having it a week...it went crazy and shut off on me. It was a pretty new car...just seemed like a lemon. They let me give that car back and get a completely different car. Which I absolutely love and so glad it ended up this way.

we always recommend them and Hoover Toyota...we do all our business at those two places.

Agreed, Carmax is overpriced. I live private party cars that have been well treated and certified pre-owned for my expensive cars

They were actually the cheapest for my Cadillac SRX that I have now. The closest to it was $2000 more at the local cadillac dealer and that was for a color I didn't like. We looked at multiple dealers. I think it depends on what you are looking at.

Bought a Nissan Altima from Carmax some years ago. I would buy from them again. Most of their vehicles are lease returns from large companies. Low mileage and well maintained. Well equipped but not top of the line. Internet shopping is the way to go now.

I only use CarMax. I know I could get better deals on price, but they always have treated me well. For me it is worth a few dollars to get a car I can trust.

Unless you're buying in cash, you can much better rates on a new car..

I've bought several cars from Carmax. You can find cars cheaper elsewhere but part of the allure of Carmax is the easy and no haggle buying process. And when I say cheaper I'm not talking much cheaper. Generally Carmax is within $1000 or so the competitors..

I bought from CarMax.

A huge advantage is their nationwide network. Way bigger than Driver's Way, and therefore more likely to have what you want, the way you want it. And they have a lot of cars with really low miles.

You do pay for that, but not all that much.

One disadvantage is that they won't let you take the car for inspection by your mechanic. They say their 5-day "return for any reason, even if it's just that you changed your mind" policy offsets. But then you'd have to un-do tag, title work, insurance and any financing you got. Big pain in the neck.

I didn't like that, but went ahead anyway because it was a reliable model with only 10K miles. Post-purchase inspection was clear.

Other than that, I was happy with the experience. Car turned out fine, now has 42k on it. Good lord willing, I plan to drive it another 100k.
