This quote concerns me most, and pretty much tracks with what we've seen so far.

"Program insiders told CBS Sports this offseason that DeBoer truly believes in his abilities to out-scheme and out-think opponents and prioritizes it over the mental toughness Saban used to drill into his teams."

Curious how this didn't get reported earlier amid all the sunshine pumping and good vibes of the preseason....

If that's true that's scary, because FSU out schemed us & manhandled us, allllll night long at the LOS on both sides of the ball..

That's a finesse football style mentality & not a physicality style football like we're used too at Bama
I think Coach Saban and Coach Bryant, in many ways, were cut from the same bolt of cloth. Yes, different eras, but many of the same bedrock beliefs insofar as how you win. Sacrifice and mental and physical toughness were paramount for both. Whether or not the youth of today, and thus the game, passed them by ( in many respects, I think they have ), I’m not absolutely certain.

Somebody will have to let me know if he owns up to just how bad he has no idea about what’s he’s talking about.

He perennially hypes up the OL and this time puffed up the whole team as his NC pick.

Such an empty headed smoke blowing meat suit posing as an expert.
Pate appeals to college football “purists” and acts like he knows everything that is going on. Basically he is a recruiting publication hack who convinces people who are unaware with how media and college football politics work .

I mean he really is no different than what you get from Denis Dodd… just a little more intelligence involved

Stallings, too.

In fact, all three of these men won championships with teams that dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Yesterday, Alabama was the one dominated--on both sides of the ball.

This matches up with everything I know about him. I think he is a smart coach, there's no way around that. You don't beat Smart, Lanning, Sark, etc... without having a few tricks up your sleeve.

But, his last season at Washington he had a bunch of 6 year seniors including Penix. Tons of experience, and not a whole lot of 4 or 5 star types. So, ultimately he had older, more experienced, more coachable guys. Couple this with being on the west coast, and he didn't have to teach them the physicality and discipline that's necessary to succeed in the SEC.

I'm not sure he, nor any of his friends from his relatively short time at the FBS level have what it takes to instill that in players. I don't think you find what you need to do that at Indiana or Fresno St. He's going to have to hand out the big contracts to people other than just his friends to install some toughness and aggression in these guys.

Scary if true but it is the "according to insiders" that strikes me. Could be a total fake news job just to write a thrilling piece.

That could explain why he just stands there dumbfounded as the walls come tumbling down all around him. If he’s that far up his rear we are cooked

As previously stated, even Saban couldn’t get physically out of these guys.

I guess I’m going to lean towards the holdover coaches and the S&C community for the lack of physical play.

No more gimmes.

I don’t know about that. Talty was a reporter on the Alabama beat similar to Nick Kelly for a number of years. I would think does have some people still very close to the program.

Not saying he is a “late Cecil Hurt” type insider. Just saying he does have a history covering Alabama .
