NASCAR attempted to do the same thing and it didn’t work out like they thought it would.
The result NASCAR got - Jimmie Johnson winning 5 straight championships, six out of eight, and 7 out of 11 - is exactly what's going to happen with CFB. It will not get EASIER for 1984 BYU types or 2009 Boise State types to win national titles, it has now become impossible. But it also is now EASIER for an Alabama or Ohio State to lose 2-3 games and win it all. And given the proposed gauntlet, nobody can say any champion didn't win it on the field.

That doesn't mean it made the SPORT as a whole better, though.

Nah, it totally makes the sport better, you just don't understand sports well enough.

Which is an actual argument I once heard for the expansion of playoffs.
So hilarious now to watch after years of "these players are students, you can't overdo it with them" to prevent us from having a December playoff go flying by the wayside like it wasn't a key argument for 75 years.

Maybe it's due to the number of years since the BCS was last used, but I never really had an issue with the BCS rankings. The 4-team playoff could've/should've used the BCS formula for their ranking purposes. This current iteration of the playoffs should use it as well.
Actually, I wonder if the BCS Committee didn't actually use the old BCS formula behind the scenes as the selections always matched what the formula would have resulted in anyways...
