Since it is slow right now...I'll throw this out for debate.
I'm no college football coach, but I think if I were the DC at bama this year I would at least have to consider implementing the 3-4 Defense. It really seems to make sense to me. One of our weakest links this season will be our D-line. Our strongest point this season is our line backers. With the 3-4 it would allow our thin d-linmen more rest and let them be more effective. With 4 lb's on the field we could put wortham and roach on the field at the same time. So the way I see it, the 3-4 would allow us to put our best players on the field(lb's) and keep our D-linemen fresh. What do you guys think about that? I know it is unconventional, but drastic times call for drastic measures. RTR

i think it would work if BAMA had three very large and very fast Defensive linemen.... but we don't.

We have one dominating defensive end in Todd Bates. The other defensive end is fast but smaller. None of BAMA's DTs are very big or fast.

going to a 3-4 at BAMA just wouldn't put enough meat on the line with the current players that we have.

Bill Oliver liked the 3-4, but in my opinion to run the 3-4, your real men better be on the line to give you the ability to have that 4th linebacker, you need some real men up front. A gamer down low in the middle with an attitude and two studs on the outside that can bring the heat and are versatile enough to stop the run as well, see John Copeland and Eric Curry for more on this.

Offenses would run all over us.
With a little more depth and weight, it could work, but now I'd rather them keep the 4-3 and learn how TO FREAK IT OUT.

I always liked when the defense is well-trained enough to be able to "drift" into and out of position, knowing where they have to be and what they have to do once the ball snaps. A swarming Alabama Defense out of a 4-3 is NAAASTY!!!

A 3-4 could work, but you'd end up pulling one of the backs into the Line so much to firm up against the run, it's like six of one..half of bla bla bla....

I run a 3-4 on NCAA 2004 all the time! Man, I sack the QB more times than you have years of life left!

In any D you need playmakers. If u have more playmakers at LB play'em. And just about every team has more playmakers at LB than at DT. I think the 34(or some variation) is the only D to run in the college game because of the abundance of talent at the tweener position.

BTW, these guys may not be fast and big, but they are BIG. Plenty big enough for college DTs.

3-4, 4-3, 4-19(hehe)--instead of staying with one primary scheme, I would like to think that we could adjust our schemes based on who we are playing on a given saturday and what tendencies our coaches have noticed in the game film reviews. As one famous coach once said, schemes and formations don't win games, athletes do.

I have to say...we have the players to run a good 3-4 D. Bryant, Lee and Clarck are all big enough to anchor the middle. Bates on one end and larenzo washington and turner(our new JUCO DL) can split time at the other end along with anderson for passing downs....that would allow us to keep roach and wortham (2 of our best players period) on the field to make plays. Maybe kines could switch it up....when the d-linemen start to get tired in the 3rd and 4th quarters he could switch it up to a 3-4....man I just wish he wasn't so old school. We just need some new innovations and fresh ideas and schemes on D. Too much predictability... I hope we can at least move around and stunt a litle this year to confuse the qb, even if we don't try out the 3-4.RTR

I am thinking the defense will be much improved this year. Again, its just my opinion. Of course, I think the whole team will be improved because of the continuity with the coaches. But I have read several articles quoting CJK about last year. He says that they wanted to run an aggressive attack last year, but it wasn't working. So they went to the base stuff and it worked. Then, as the year progressed, injuries took their toll and nothing worked well. I think with this year's renewed focus on strength and conditioning, the defense will be an aggressive, attacking unit.
