Is your first name Ian?

Seriously, as a reporter, is this the first thing you'd ask the coach at the University of Alabama before the first game?

If you've listened to any of the press conferences, it's obvious this guy is a moron.
Nope. And nope. Neither did Ian. Ian asks multiple questions per press conference, and the dress question was just one of his questions. I've listened to every press conference, and I don't think Ian is any more of a moron than any of the other reporters. It's funny that a moderator of a message board would find Ian's questions stupid because he tends to be the one who asks CNS questions that are often batted around on message boards. Without Ian's questions, posters would still be arguing points without knowing the actual answer.

One of the ways CNS deals with him is by sitting down for some pretty extended and insightful interviews. For instance, Rapoport has an awesome article in the Birmingham News today about how the coaching staff "self scouts."

Self Scouting
Good report....reenforces my belief that this coaching staff doesn't miss anything!:)

That was an example - just one that popped to mind. Believe me, I've asked around before trying to find out who he was as I was constantly struck by the hilarity of his queries. Now I know.

I don't like him because I think his stupid questions only distract from what both CNS and we here at Tidefans want - to talk intelligently about Alabama football.

It really is that simple.

You do realize that he also asks questions that you don't deem to be "stupid." When Ian asked CNS on Monday, "Nick, I don't want to leave anything to doubt. How close are you to putting (backup) Greg McElroy in for a series and what's your confidence level in John Parker Wilson?", was that a stupid question? Ian asks a lot of questions because he is the beat reporter for the largest paper in the state. If he didn't ask both "intelligent" football questions and questions that you deem to be "stupid", then there would be a lot left unanswered.

I'm not sure why you've chosen him as the whipping boy for stupid questions.

Good point.

Maybe he asks some questions like "What are you going to wear?" only to get a slight rise out of Saban. They must have some positive relationship for Rappaport to be able to get a great article like today's Self Scouting piece. I know I sometimes will say something to my boss just to poke at him a little, see what he says or the reaction he gives ... of course you have to have a pretty good feel for the person and his or her moods, as well as the relationship to get away with it.

Again, for those of you who so quickly dis the media, take a look at Franchione today and see how he has so quickly gone from glamour boy to goat in the press. Sure, his actions are warranted, but the media, rightly or wrongly, CREATE the national and global perception of our coaches, players ... school. It pays to work with them - not against them. Saban understands this .. it's why he has so many press updates.

Simply because somewhere around 90% of the eye-rolling questions asked in all the press conferences come from him...
Out of curiosity, what eye-rolling questions has he asked? (Aside from the infamous "what will you be wearing" question, which I think we all can agree was pretty dumb.)

Ehh, go back and watch the press conferences - there's been a gem or two in each one so far...

What were the ones from the last press conference? Do you think that the question that started this thread was a "bonehead" question? It seemed to me to be a question right along the lines of sports psychology...which just happens to be one of Coach Saban's loves.

Yeah the Blog he wrote was even better. I consider myself pretty astute (Dad, Uncles, and brother are coaches), but some of the things CNS went in to took it to another level. It's like me my brother and my Dad talk Basketball (their first love) and all I hear are numbers.

Yah, CNS certainly seemed to appreciate the question. [/sarcasm]

Look, I'm not going to argue with you about it - to me, he comes across like a moron, to the point I've tried to find out who he was in the past. Now I know. You feel differently, that's fine...

CNS spent a fair amount of time answering that question by using his usual sports psychology theories. You still didn't answer whether or not you thought that question fit your description of a "stupid" question. Did it?

As for whether or not Ian's a moron. I think most of his writing and the majority of his questions during the press conferences proves that he's no worse than the vast majority of people in his profession. Maybe you just think that all sports journalists are morons.

No, and please don't put words in my mouth. To me, Ian stands alone in his comical genius.

And now, I'm done with this - I'm quite sure everyone here knows how I feel about Ian by now...

I'm very impressed. You did a phenomenal job ignoring a simple question multiple times. Instead, you responded to other parts of my post. You would make a fantastic politician.

Someone asks three stupid questions and two not stupid questions. Is it not fair to say he asked stupid questions?
