This smells, but I figured I'd ask about it since I didn't see it on here.
deepsouthsports.net: Who Wouldn't Want to Spend 5 Years With Nick Saban?
Anyway, Bobby calls Nick and Coach Saban stops him before he tells where he is going and said this, "Bobby, do not even tell me where you are going, because if you are not going to Alabama I am turning you into the NCAA. You know you have a chance to start at Alabama at right tackle as a sophomore, and nobody would turn that down unless they did something illegal."
I figure someone on here, like maybe HSV, would know if this sounds even remotely possible. I'm guessing it's a case of slander.

Well, first you know it's a lie, when Saban is quoting as telling Massie that he's turning BM in to the NCAA, since it's impossible for a coach to turn a player in to the NCAA. Only a complaint can be filed against the school involved. I'm sure there was some heat involved, since Massie had consistently informed the AD up until the night before NSD that he was firm to Bama. I'm not going to treat whether or not we filed a complaint with the SEC or the NCAA, but I will say that this may be one of those recruiting cases you hear about again downstream...

For anyone who's got any information about what happened here, I've been curious ever since signing day. A couple mods dropped some hints on the recruiting board, but nothing else was ever said about it.

In the comments at the end of the linked article, something was said about a "tire distributor" that may have funneled money to Massie.

I know some want to just say "move on," but anytime anyone's allegedly doing dirty deeds to mess with our recruiting, I think that's a relevant issue.

Well the first clue should be that the story originates from an Ole Miss fan's blog site. However, there is a bit of truth in it that has nothing to do with a conversation between Massie and Saban. We'll see how it turns out.

I haven't seen Nick as quoted saying that but Massie is one of a few recruits who made some quick mind changes at the last minute. That usually gives cause for concern and I know that isn't the answer you are looking for but that's today's answer.

Thanks for the replies. I doubted that there was much truth behind this. Maybe someone trying to "spin" before it blows up on them?
I agree with HSV when he says that Massie's recruiting will become a major program with Ole Miss. I get the impression that CHN is trying to win as many games in the next couple of yrs to get himself a better job and then split from Ole Miss, consequences be darned.

agreed....ole sis and ole sis fans would be wise to shut their dumpsters on the Massie recruitment.....they keep talking and raising a stink about it and they probably won't like what happens

One of Ole Miss' main boosters is a fellow out of Batesville that owns a tire manufacturing business. I can't remember his name, or even the tire business off hand; but it a pretty lucrative company. Either way, that is probably who is being alluded to in the comments of the article. Rumor has it, that this same guy helps to recruit high school kids to South Panola as well. He will provide jobs to the parents so that they can move their kid into the school district. Once again this is all rumor, but I have heard a few other stories like this about this guy; and from Ole Miss fans at that. So who knows!!!!!!:BigA:

First of all, Massie and his family have had nothing but positive things about Alabama and Saban to say to the press since signing day. Second, there is absolutely no way that Saban would promise any recruit, even as one as talented as Massie, a starting position at any time. So, you can chalk this story up to another great example of Ole Sis fiction.

I don't even give that site the time of day.

I swear to you Eric is an Aubarn fan, posing as an Ole Miss fan. You won't find another FAN who obsesses over Alabama more than an Aubarn fan will. Eric is definitely Aubarn.

Despite any evidence to the contrary, let's just assume hypothetically that there is some truth to Massie's recruiting story. Even with that assumption, I don't view this as "negative recruiting."

Negative recruiting, to me, is talking down the other school: "Ole Miss is a racist school." "That coach isn't going to be there much longer." "All the girls on their campus have hairy chests and knobby knees."

I see nothing wrong with Nick Saban telling a recruit, "Hey, if you're not calling to tell me you're still committed to me, then I don't want to hear it." Plus, if there's an overzealous booster big enough to be commonly known by rival fans, you'd better believe that Coach Saban has knowledge of the situation. With that in mind, I don't even have a problem with him telling the kid, "You and I both know the opportunity you have here at Alabama, so if you end up at Ole Miss, I'm gonna suspect you got paid to do it." It may be a little cocky, but it's not negative propoganda.

The other thing I LIKE about the story is that I know Nick Saban is smart enough to know that "Those that live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks." I would be much more troubled if we lost a heated recruiting battle that smelled of foul play, but in the end just walked away as if to say, "Oh, well, we just got out-bid on that one." If Coach Saban is truly throwing big rocks, then that's just more assurance to me that he's running a clean program that would stand up to the same type of scrutiny from competitive programs.
