Coach Saban's Frustration (Link)

Okay, since we're on this topic ... was anyone else besides me taken aback by Keith Brown's attitude in the post-game radio interview Saturday?

He was asked something about whether the team had a lack of focus on the ULM game ... and his answer was basically to recite his statistics for the game (x catches, x yards) and dismiss the question.

Don't want to be overly-critical, but it rubbed me the wrong way.

With some it's ok to be overly critical. And no, I was not taken aback, exactly the thing I would expect to come from his and certain other players' mouths...

Does anyone have a transcript of exactly what he said? I remember the comment but not the context of the question by Eli that led to the answer. It didn't strike me as a bad answer at the time....he seemed a bit shell-shocked during the interview but I can't quite recall all of it.

No transcript available that I know of, so I hope I'm not misrepresenting it at all.

It just seemed backwards ... normally leaders on a team will say that their individual statistics don't mean anything since the team lost. In this case it was more like, "Hey, I got my six catches for 110 yards (or whatever it was) ... so don't blame me."

He didn't say that exactly, of course ... but that's how it came across to me.

I agree that leadership leads to focus and execution. Do you remember that Hall was also suspended for the Cotton Bowl a few years back? This kid has tremendous talent and the chance to play on Sundays. You would think he want every chance possible to make a play. Im not sure what he
was suspended for, but id love to know.

What specifically is your problem with it?

My guess is that when we hear that remark it really sounds like he's threatening us. The point is to ask who was he making that remark to? the reporters? fans? admin? players? Who exactly is it that has made him think that he wouldnt be allowed to 'do it the right way.' It wasnt exactly clear to me.

Nothing specific, i just wasn't fond of it. Maybe my take on it is wrong. What is your take on it?

I personally thought it was the best quote of the whole press conference.

It's proof of Saban's vision of leadership. He doesn't have to have 100 18-22 year-olds on board with it (or a bunch of hard-to-please fans, or a bunch of quote-seeking media members) to be correct. And he doesn't have to beat a mediocre Sun Belt school to prove he can coach.

right things + right way = long term success

I guess after thinking about it, the main reason i didn't care for it is because of the media. Look at how they are twisting the whole 9/11, Pearl Harbor analogy thing. Its no secret that the national media as a whole doesnt' like Saban. It just concerns me that some moron reporter will write a story alluding that Saban "may not stick around". Even if not true, stupid crap like that is the last thing the U of A needs, especially in regards to recruiting.

"I'm not going to sugarcoat it," he (Saban) said. "If we can't win doing it the right way, then I won't be here. That's not going to happen."

I cringed at this comment myself. I haven't seen the press conference, so it may be slightly out of context. The (bad) feeling I get from this quote is a message that sounds more like: "If these players don't want to buy in to what I'm doing, I'll just move on to another place that does."

This would be contrasted to a message that I would prefer to hear, like, "If these players don't want to do the things the right way, I'll bring in some who will, because I'll be here until we get it right."

I wasn't too fond of this remark.[/QUOTE]

Sounds to me like we're going to do it the right way.

He also said "we will find the ones who care and the ones that don't won't be here. We'll get it right with the players that want to do it right."

I took Sabans comment about "Not being here" like him saying that if we, the fans, alumni, staff, students players, or all of the bamanation are going to try and win championships without doing it the right way, then he wont be the one doing it bceause the ONLY way he will win a championship is doing it the right way. SO he was basically saying that IF we somehow win one doing it another way, then it will be without him because he will only do it the right way.

Got to remember that he preceded that comment with lamblasting the media and whomever else about putting championships before doing things right. He was explaining that doing things right will lead to champions.

Maybe he was one of the guys who got ready to play and was disgusted with the ones who weren't.

I've pondered this for a little myself JB and I think you might be right. Maybe he was trying to diffuse the direct question about team focus by saying in a sense, that some might have lost focus but he didn't....
I'm still struggling with it though because it did, at first blush, come off a little arrogant. But maybe he didn't mean it that way. Maybe it was just how I took it because I was upset with the game and some of the players actions all year.

..... and with the JPW comment...... The author of the article used the term "he shrugged it off". I don't think JPW meant it in a manor like he didn't care anymore. If I remember correctly in an artical the other week, CNS was defending JPW as being one of the players who was trying to do things the "right way". It has not been that way all year with one player or another from what I've seen.... Someone has been screwing up in some form or fashion. So, it is of no surprise anymore according to JP.....

And in closing, I commend CNS for his comment about wanting to do things the right way or no way at all. I don't want Alabama to be represented by an undisciplined team, that makes poor choices on and off the field and a staff that has a "win at any expense" mentality.

..... Exiting stage right from the soap box now.

Not doing things the right way is why the team is in the mess it's in to start with. I'm very confident that it's going to change starting this past Sat. I took his comments as if you don't do it the right way you won't be on the team.

About the only two senoirs I hate to see leave this year is Wallace Gilberry and Darren Mustin! A walk on and a last second find by Shula who didn't have a D-1 scholly!! The juniors had better get IT, by next fall or we are going to be the youngest starting team in the nation, in my opinion!

Britt has been solid and kept his nose clean. You always know you are getting 100% from him. Gonna miss him over there beside big A.

What I took from it was that he would be gone if he couldn't win and do it the right way, which I took to mean without 12 suspensions in a season. Then he immediately said that he didn't see that happening (his failing to win). I think you really have to torture his language to twist it into a threat. It sounded like a pronouncement of determination to me. But, then, I don't have an essentially negative attitude towards him, as you do, judging from your posts, so I"m not parsing his every word for something to criticize...

Your wrong about this big guy. I DO NOT have a negative attitude towards CNS. I DO think he is the right man for the job. However, i don't always agree with his decisions, nor does anyone else on here. And as far as judging from my past posts, i'm not gonna sit here and say that i've not said one negative thing about CNS, but a few negative posts doesn't reflect an overall negative attitude towards CNS!
