The “announcement” after the egg bowl is just super bizarre. Like why? This doesn’t make ole miss look good either way so why do it? Makes you wonder if anyone can look past what’s right in front of them and consider oh I don’t know like 1.5 months into the future.
I sure think if he was staying he'd just announce it now so the players are not distracted. Not a good thing to go into a rivalry game with players who are uncertain about the future.
We? I have an idea Bama didn’t. Byrne didn’t mention Kiffin when he did an interview on the coaching search . I heard an interview with Ryan McGee that while doing research for the 30 for 30 , The many lives of Lane Kiffin, that Kiffin expressed hurt that Bama didn’t at least contact him when Saban retired. The majority of This board and the overall fanbase seemed to reject Kiffin as a candidate due to his maturity level at the time, and now 2 years later he is the overwhelming choice of the fanbase. Just seems odd.
It really is slim pickings out there. Amazed at how quickly college football became like the NFL where coaches just get constatntly recycled. How many teams will be hiring head coaches that failed at their last gig?
My theory is that because of the desire to find the "next Saban" over the past decade, a lot of really good coaches had their careers trashed by quick triggered ADs; so, now they don't want to spend money on an unproven/unfamiliar coach, but there's not really a lot of coaches with stability and a proven track record. That's why you end up with the same few names that get pushed by the media and message boards.
Yes... It is interesting to look at coaches with a tenure of >4 years. Many had several bad seasons followed by longer stretches of success. I can only assume there are lots of bad and mediocre coaches who aren't really capable of managing a larger football program well, and lots of schools that are very unrealistic about what their ceiling is.
We've even heard them with LSU.
Remember when Kirk Herbstreit broke the story RIGHT BEFORE the 2007 SECCG that Les Miles was the next Michigan head coach? And Herbstreit doesn't tend to traffic in those kinds of rumors, so I've always wondered if he had a previously reliable source that got something wrong.
Miles denounced the report and said he was staying at LSU - and I didn't believe him for a second. I thought it was a repeat of "I'm not gonna be the Alabama coach" to wait and see what happened.
And in 2007, of course, the SECCG and BCS was the equivalent to the playoffs.
What's so funny is that the "Next Legend" is always out there and not yet a legend.
Who saw Jimmy Johnson becoming a coaching legend when he was Oklahoma State?
The Guy at Penn State?
Tom Osborne?
Who saw Bob Stoops - who rose like a comet and then regressed but kept his rep - as good as he was?
Jim Tressel?
Pete Carroll?
Bobby Bowden?
Urban Meyer?
Who saw Nick Saban as a legend when he was at MICHIGAN STATE????
When LSU hired him, I laughed my tail off and thought they'd hired a "name" because of his last name. Remember, LSU had gone through a horrid cycle of hires with Archer, Hallman, and DiNardo to say nothing of Stovall. (And while we look back sentimentally, there's no reason to ASSUME Bo Rein would have become the next Woody Hayes at LSU. Everyone just wishes he'd had the chance to succeed or fail - and not die).
Actually we do… just not as publicly available due to the reasons why. He wasn’t and will never be as long as the powers that be are still in charge with CNS in as some sorta advisor. He has burned way too many bridges here that it’s crazy that he still thinks he has a shot here. The Joey freshwater saga is the more milder issues he had here to give you an example of what was going on.
No, no, I don't think he's ignoring it. I'm rather worried that he doesn't know how to fix it. Justice Haynes sticks out like a big sore thumb.
I say, let's run for 175-225 against Auburn and prove my concerns were unwarranted. Then everyone will be happy, especially me.
You think he’s just supposed to what, tighten a bolt somewhere and fix it? Maybe draw a new play in the dirt that will work? The running game has been struggling for years. Go get in Saban’s face if you want to get to the root of the problem. He let this happen. It’s not going to magically turn around in one season.

Dude’s defense just held a team to 34 yards.
His “fixed” running game won’t put 170 on folks, it will be in the 110-150 range and be efficient with the carries given.
