Coaching carousel 2025-26

That’s not remotely the same.

He took over a program near crippled by sanctions and a loss of scholarships.

He had to completely rebuild the brand image and the foundations of a winning program and a roster.

There was a dearth of talent when he showed up in 2007 and then in 2008 he had them ranked #1 in year two going toe to toe with Urban Meyer’s Florida program.

Four years prior to CNS the program had a W/L record of 26-23

Four Years prior to CKD the program had a W/L record of 49-6 and 4 straight years finishing in the Top 5

We have been 19-7 in the last two seasons and just barely made a Playoff field with 12 teams.

It’s not a 1:1 comparison at all.
Yes he had to rebuild the roster, the way he wanted it also, yes KD had a talented roster but it was not the most talented in college football, look at the talent that left or graduated after Saban retired, this is just my opinion, I know one I'm going to support him win or lose

Not to mention all the depth that was taken from us in the portal 2 years ago. Deboer had to deal with something that nobody else ever had or still has had to deal with, and that's open season on your own roster, but not being able to sign any players yourself. Michigan is the only team that came close, but they hired from within so they didn't have to deal with it either. One of our biggest problems the last two years has been depth, and the exodus after Saban left has a lot to do with it. Couple that with the fact that DeBoer has had to navigate schedules that are tougher than anything Saban had to deal with, and you have what we've gotten the last 2 seasons. The SEC has always been the best in this time period, but it has reached new heights in the last two seasons.

I wish he was a little more succinct in his answers. There isn’t a hidden meaning, it’s just the way the man talks. But , it leads to this-

If Kalen DeBoer wanted to tamp down some of the smoke surrounding Michigan, he didn’t do a great job of it on Monday.

The Alabama head coach, thought to be one of the the Wolverines’ targets in their ongoing search to replace Sherrone Moore, had to be asked twice during his news conference in Tuscaloosa if he would coach the Crimson Tide in 2026.

He answered the question with a "yes". He laughed because he was asked a second time in the same press conference about something he'd already answered. I don't see any "smoke" to anything, just media doing their best to stir the pot....as usual.
Asked a second time on Monday if he will be the head coach at Alabama next season, DeBoer laughed before telling reporters, “Yeah, I plan on being, yes.

He didn’t answer the question directly the first time. That was why it was asked again. He wasn’t trying to be ambiguous, but his rambling answer made people feel that way.

I really don't know what else he could have said. He said "I plan to be, yes." He didn't say definitely because it's the schools decision whether or not to keep him, not his.

Yes, the second time it was asked. Not directly answering the first time fans the flames of ‘ he is waffling.’ And leads to more discussion. As I said, it’s just the way he talks, not meaning to be ambiguous. He would simply rather talk about the upcoming game.

He kinda answered it. He said "Come on Nick" That's a polite way of saying "I've already answered that, so why do you keep asking?" For these kinds of people, there is nothing you could possibly say that would satisfy them, because they'll just nitpick every tiny thing.

It literally doesn't matter what the man says, there will always be those who are convinced he has a foot out the door, or that all coaches are dirtbags who only chase money, or something else. It's why we still have people referencing Saban's "I will not be the coach at Alabama" despite the fact they know they're taking it out of context.

It's why I've mentioned that neither he nor the AD need to do anything - some folks are going to disbelieve or parse his words no matter what he says. They should just ignore them.

I have heard the Saban quote several times. One has nothing to do with the other.
On a related unrelated note, I hope Michigan keeps thinking DeBoer is headed to Ann Arbor. Think that all the way through July !

Ok, so Michigan Hires Jedd Fisch, leaving a vacancy at Washington. , after losing to OU, CKD bails and goes back to Washington, Lane Kiffin leaves LSU without coaching a game and goes to Alabama, and LSU is forced to rehire Brian Kelly. The Ultimate spin cycle! Don’t laugh too hard, I read that today.

Alabama averaged a national title every three years under Saban. I know that I am not saying anything that isn't already known, but sometimes I wonder if we truly comprehend how unbelievable that really is and how we have created these lofty expectations of what the program can realistically achieve year-in and year-out. If Kalen DeBoer had achieved the same results in his first two years after replacing Mike Shula, Mike Dubose, or even Gene Stallings, would we be having the same conversations about him? Perhaps there are fans that would, but I think it would be only the lunatic fringe thinking that way.

That's funny, though I could see Washington hiring Grubb. Hope not though, because I think we could benefit from finally having some continuity at OC.

I'm not sure what DeBoer has done to justify an extension. Is he earning his pay? Yes. Is he proving he deserves more? I don't think so.

He's earning his pay with the roster he's kept/put together. As for game management, I think many coaches could win 9 and 10 games with the quality of athletes at Alabama. I'm not sure he's earning it there.

What gives me pause about DeBoer is that even with all of the talent on the team (which, to his credit, DoBoer assembled), Alabama is a few plays away from only a 7 to 8-win season in year two, which would be a continued regression from the midway point of year one.
