The reality of it is we have struggled signing a lot of elite DL over the years, no matter who was here. Saban's scheme gives opposing recruiters the ammo to say "You will just be a space eater, you will get very few sacks, you won't be a star, blah, blah, blah).

If this guy can come in and develop lower rated guys like he had at Mizzou who would die to come here into 1st round talent, rather than sign flashy 5 stars, I'm good with that!

Wow! Struggled to sign elite DL guys? We won 5 NC in nine years because we did sign elite DL guys.

Wow... Just a reminder: https://bamahammer.com/2017/06/07/alabama-football-30-best-3-star-rated-players-tide-history/
30 best 3 star rated player under Saban..... *hint* Eddie Jackson is one of them. Remember that dude? He was the starting safety for Bama a while back. Remember Deion Belue? Maze? Norwood? Coffee? Jones?

You wanted us to sign 5 star players only. Let's review that. Saban has signed over 40 5 stars during his tenure at Alabama. I would say 4-6 of them transferred, kicked off the team or saw little playing time.

What was my point? Saban doesn't care who he gets whether they are 3 star, 4 star, 5 star players, as long they represent the traits that Saban looks for in a player.

Exactly. And many 4 star players are borderline and easily could have been 5 star. They will be when Saban and co gets done with them. LOL

Ok, you guys are right. We've signed all the elite HS DL that we've ever wanted.🙄

We have signed a lot of great lineman, and many of them became elite. I'm just saying not all that many have been considered elite coming of High School. The list above of the 15 players we have put in the NFL has 3 JUCO transfers, so 20% of the guys that have gone on to the NFL didn't sign here out of HS. Buggs is a JUCO guy that is one of our top returning players next year.

Believe what you want to believe, but we have missed on a lot of highly rated DL prospects that we recruited hard, especially elite inside guys coming out of HS.

Coach Saban is about to tap into that South Florida talent by hiring Coach Kuligowski & that's good thang for Bama Football..That's not a good thang at all for the rest of college football..Coach Kuli is a great recruiter & he has some key connections in the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country.."The Process" only grows stronger with this hire for sure..

Waiting for Bodiddle...... Going out on a limb here and saying that he`ll disagree!

And those are just the highly ranked DL guys I know we wanted. There are plenty more that were offered. While UA has gotten its fair share of great DL recruits, it's also missed on several elite guys.

Also, worth remembering Alabama signs some OLBs with the intention of using them as DEs. Jonathan Allen is a perfect example. He was rated the #3 OLB in the nation yet played on the line for Alabama.

A'Shawn was seen as an OT or DL by recruiting services.

the odd front scheme can be used against us for DL prospects. You're going to be asked to eat up space more to allow backers to make the plays on the ball. Lately we have become more friendly to DL body types making one on one plays. Heck if it wasn't for everyone but the OLBs making effective pressures then our team would've been toast this year. We really didn't have quality OLB play for nearly all of the regular season other than the first half of the FSU game.

Which makes this year's title win even more unbelievable. The linebackers have long been the core of our defenses , fortunately the increased play of Payne and Davis helped offset some of those injuries this year.

Personally, because of all the injuries and the necessity to adjust accordingly on the D side of the ball, I think it was a masterpiece on the part of the staff. I think it was not just a scheme thing but also a culture of " next man up " and a commitment to achieving a standard that the players have been exposed to and have bought into.

Alabama uses DTs the way that the NFL uses DTs, and that shows in NFL drafts. You could argue that Alabama has not excelled in producing great DEs. But Alabama's use of LBs to fill the edge rush roles makes that a non-issue if you are an Alabama fan. You need someone to get to the QB - a LB, safety or DB will do just as well as a DE.

If that`s so, when coupled with the general success of the team ( how many national titles in the last 10 years? ) , I`m surprised we`re not " DT U ".

Excellent point, B1G!

while that's true with Allen, he was also listed as a potential DE. The OLB tag was from early in HS when he was only around 220lbs. it's more common that we take WDE's and transform them into OLBs as that is what our scheme dictates. This is also what means we lose out on some WDE's as they're just not that interested in having to make that switch and learn the other parts of that role. Also a lot of guys listed as DTs end up in our scheme as DEs since we typically have bigger body DEs in our scheme that would be used in a 4 man front.

There's four 5 star guys on that list in in 11 years of CNS being here. A lot of those guys were 3 stars we developed. I'm not saying we haven't had some great linemen, it's just that we've missed on a lot elite HS DL that we were recruiting over the years, and anybody following recruiting would tell you that.

That said, I stand by what I said. If Coack K can come in and development guys into monsters and NFL talent, I don't care what they are ranked coming out of High School.

There is actually five 5* players (Allen, Robinson, Hand, Payne and Ray). My main point was the other school recruiters saying "you will be a space eater, won't get sacks, won't be a star" part of your comment can't be used based on the players we have put in the league.

Regarding the 5* DL, there are only about 25-30 5* in every class and probably 5 of those are DL so we have signed approximately 10% of all 5* DL since Saban has been here. While it not out of this world incredible it is very, very good and again not struggling. I counted 13 very highly rated 4*'s in that group also.

Yeah they do say it, and a whole lot of the guys believe it. Jonathan Allen is the ONLY guy on that list that has double digits in career sacks.

If you don't think recruits pay attention to that, look at that list RTR91 posted of guys we've missed on in the greatest era of football and recruiting if any program of all time.

Bama has long been the recipient of negative recruiting............I am sure it will continue from now on, but I think now with this coaching staff there wont be a lot of ammo that other coaches can use........... I wouldn't mind seeing some teams, especially one to the East become the recipient of some of that negative crap they are dishing out

There is absolutely no need to be negatively recruiting when you've won five of the last nine national championships. I would simply say to any parent that if another school spoke poorly of Alabama that it would be jealousy, pure and simple.
