I think I saw that they started only tested those with symptoms but then they had enough cases that they tested everyone
Just asking for a friend. Did Coach Jimbo go into the AD's office and say, "we just cannot play this game against that bunch of players from the deep Forest. I don't even have a QB! So, can you come up with a good line to get us outta this bowl thing? You know we've been hearing about that COVID thing. After all, we do have boosters with truck, I mean warehouses, full of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. We don't need to go and get a couple of million $$$$$$$ from Gator Country. You also know that I just won the Recruiting Lottery for A & M. and I need to start preparing, I mean developing, them to be able to beat Bama in Tuscaloosa next year."

Judging by what I just saw in Florida at Universal Studios, we're about to see an utter explosion of Omicron transmission. Maybe 30% mask wearing, and social distancing was at best 2 feet for thousands upon thousands. Add air flights back to where everyone came from, and I see a recipe for a lot of sick people. I'm guessing the best run programs will be fine, but any program without a firm grip on their player masking, testing, and quarantining will be quickly overwhelmed by COVID like A&M.

I do not understand the assumption that A&M wasn't being honest about the vaccination rates. The variants do not seem to care much about the vaccine in terms of catching it (severity is another story), sports leagues and locations with 90% vaccine rates are still having massive outbreaks. We know vaccinated people are catching it, so I don't understand assuming that's not the case here.

Clearly, pretty much anyone can catch the newest variant. Just look at the numbers, it makes no sense that places that are mostly vaccinated would have higher Covid rates than before the vaccine if it was working on the newest variants. I'm not trying to make this political but there's a lot of blame that has gone on through this whole thing when so far basically everything everyone has tried hasn't been that effective.

Fairly reasonable take. Even though the vaccines are still effective (especially if boosted) at preventing severe disease (aka requiring hospitalization) this variant spreads far faster and evades immunity from the vaccine or previous infection. That means more will become (re)infected than would have if it had not mutated as it did. It is what it is at this point and this is a problem across all sports (along with every other sector of society).

Could aTm have played the game anyway? Don't know and don't care.

Folks, we are not debating vaccines and related issues in this forum. This message has been repeated over the past almost two years but some of you continue in your desire to bring those debates here.

Stop it.

We aren't discussing politics or your opinions on medical issues here. Most of the comments are fine right up until it goes one step too far because you go beyond the facts and how they relate to the sport. Please keep the discussion on relevant issues.

There is overlap between current medical/social issues and football. That's as far on the social/medical side things need to go in this forum. If it helps, draw yourself a Venn diagram to help you decide if your post is appropriate to a football forum that tries to avoid hot button topics that devolve into a mess that someone else has to clean up behind you.

This year there were 83 bowl-eligible teams but only 41 bowls. So an extra game was made up at the last minute so nobody got left out.

That opened up an extra spot, so Hawaii was picked to play in the Hawaii Bowl with a 6-7 record against Memphis.

Today Hawaii said they are dropping out due to COVID. So Memphis misses out on a bowl.

Wonder if Memphis could play Wake Forest?

The Omicron variant seems to spread pretty much regardless of vaccination status -- it's fairly mild but very transmissible.
The key word is MILD. I say play on and stop the nonsense! These kids have a greater chance of harm traveling to the game than from this virus. ESPN is pumping this garbage at us with a firehose. EVERY story is related to covid and 99% of the ticker headlines running across the bottom of the tv screen are reporting every case. NONE OF THESE ATHLETES ARE DYING! MJ played one of the most memorable games of his life with the flu and it was celebrated.👍🏻😁

@Perrett4Bama , exactly! When it was announced that the Hawaii Bowl was cancelled due to Covid, I just shook my head. None of these cases have landed one player in the hospital. If it had, it'd.be all over the news. The media is doing it's best to set this whole thing back to March 2020
