"He's got a man!" - Oh really? I thought he had a girlfriend

"He's got speed in space" - So he can't run fast if someone is next to him?

"He's got all the intangibles" - Oh, I thought he was loaded with tangibles.

"He runs crisp clean routes" - So other guys are dirty and soggy?

"They're trying to feel out the defense" - Now that's just nasty!

"They have to stop the big play" - NO REALLY!?

"They are doing too much grabbing on defense" - Duh...huh?

It takes a ____________ blank bounce. (on kickoffs)

One that's making its way over from basketball: "Alabama ball." No, it's not an Alabama decorated ball; it's "Alabama's ball."

*One of the keys to victory: not turning the ball over (mental note: remember, turnovers are bad)
*I like what they're doing here: keeping the defense on their toes and moving the ball down field (Yes, that would be a good thing. Not exactly a strategy, but good nonetheless)

"He gets stronger as the game goes on.""

That's not possible. He might be more effective late in the game because everyone else is getting tired, but nobody get stronger as the game goes on.

What's interesting to me is that almost all of these cliche's represent a valid concept. A cliche' is just a bankrupt way to express the idea. Some of them aren't the brightest sorts, so they fall back on previously memorized phrases. The dumbest apply the right phrases at the wrong places or just string a bunch together, hoping something will fit...

"that's a football player right there!" Really chucky? What gave it away, the pads and the helmet?

It's not a cliche' but I hate hearing, "that was a designed play..." Really? Aren't all the plays designed to do SOMETHING?

I know I probably just don't "get it" because I am female, but that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard regarding football.

I can't stand it when they ask guys like Holtz, or for that matter anyone what their keys to victory are and they say something to the effect of:
"They need to control the ball on offense, limit the big plays on defense, and avoid turnovers, and blank team will win the game." Well thank you for that gem! What a perfect strategy for any team to follow! They also need to "put the ball in the endzone."
