Memphis will have to score quickly and get an onside kick if they are to have a chance. Penn State could call out the running play to the Memphis defense and they still couldn't stop it at this point.

Considering they are minus their HC, OC and DC, the Tigers made a really good showing of themselves today. Convert just two of those FGs into TDs and this is an entirely different game. Also, Franklin outsmarted himself in this game. Memphis could not stop the run AT ALL. I would have passed only when necessary in the second half.

LOL, you call timeout on 4th and 7 to come up with the perfect play that will allow you to get the 1st down and maintain possession until the game is over, said play is the perfect play but your WR falls to the ground SHORT of the 1st down marker...

That only gives them 8 more points - they have to convert 4 of the 6 FGs into TDs to change the outcome. But the game would have been closer.

Totally agree that Franklin made this game closer than it needed to be. They were running at will, averaging over 7 yards per carry. Franklin outsmarted himself with his halftime adjustments. Should have just stuck with the running game and won by 4 TDs.

If UM’s first two FGs had been TD’s, they are up 21-7 going into the 2nd quarter. Would have changed the complexion of the game, IMO. Huge momentum shift. Franklin, in his infinite “wisdom,” likely starts throwing more. Which would have favored the Tigers.

Sure, if you want to specify those two possessions. But the better team won, as much as I hate to give State Penn credit.

Or the FG that cut it to 38-36. A TD there gives Memphis a 40-38 lead. The momentum of scoring TDs vs FGs can be more significant than just point differential.

And, if UM QB just takes the sack a few mins later instead of tossing the ball up into the air, you can take 7 off the board for PSU.

Was a much more competitive game than the first CFP semifinal.
