Could have had the two of the three winnings coaches at Alabama

http://www.theledger.com/static/bowden/day8.htm

After reading this over and over it just cuts deep into my flesh. Thomas the former Alabama president had no vision what so ever. JMHO the Tide would have become the greatest program to ever suit up. Talk about a storied history! I often think of the wonderful times and titles that would have come BAMA's way. Forget about ND and Michigan. It could have been the Tide by a mile.

Also I think of why Gene Stallings wasn't hired until later. What could have been! What could have been is still a discussion for the next generation. Only men of vision can bring great things forward. :BigA:

YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT SPILLED MILK!! Besides, CBB spent several years stuck in that " preseason no.1" and "wide right" scenario that lasted for years. Would UA have had the patience to endure that type of losing streak to AU (current streak not withstanding due to special circumstances)? At that time, following in CPB's footsteps and given that the program was on solid ground when CRP left, Bama fans would have had little patience, as was seen in the case of CBC. I'm not saying that things would have worked out this way, but there's no guarantee that CBB would have raked in NC's left and right either. Appreciate what we have, and have had(92), and look forward to a new age of CRIMSON DOMINATION.

For those that don't think probation hurt our ability to recruit, you need to read this portion of the article.

"One of the biggest impacts on both the programs at FSU and Miami, though, was an 18-month NCAA investigation that began in 1982 and concluded in 1984

As a result of the investigation, Pell was fired three games into the 1984 season and replaced by Galen Hall. Florida was hit with three years of severe sanctions that included TV and bowl game bans for two years, and reduced scholarships.

It took the Gators the rest of the decade to overcome those sanctions, and it gave FSU and Miami the upper hand in recruiting.
"When they had the problems down there with the NCAA," FSU assistant Gladden said, "instead of getting two of the top five out of the state, we were able to get five of the top five.

Bobby's 'Solid Gold Class'

"We had a couple of years where we had a windfall of players. We called the 1985 class the solid gold class."

Among the 29 players signed that year, seven went on to play in the NFL -- defensive back Deion Sanders, running back Sammie Smith, defensive lineman Odell Haggins (from Bartow), defensive back Dedrick Dodge (from Mulberry), defensive lineman Eric Hayes, offensive lineman Pat Tomberlin, and quarterback Peter Tom Willis.

"That class carried us to the next level," Gladden said. "That really boosted us."

In 1986, they added a recruiting class that included six more future NFL players -- wide receiver Terry Anthony, defensive back LeRoy Butler, running back Dexter Carter, receiver Lawrence Dawsey, receiver Ronald Lewis and linebacker Anthony Moss.

"We got the best players in the state there for a couple of years," Gladden said. "That was a jump start for us and carried us from being good to a higher level."

"Our program was going like that (up)," Bowden said, referring to the late 1970s, when Florida fired Dickey after the 1978 season and hired Pell.

"When Charley Pell came in," Bowden said, pointing his thumb down, "we couldn't get the players.

"Then when they went on probation, we're back up again and we haven't been back down since.

I honestly think BAMA would have benefited from CBB. In no way would there have been the same situations as FSU. About the spilled milk, it happens everyday. Some people have vision others do not. Had I not moved forward I would have been in a rut the rest of my life. I took a chance and it pay off big for me. I left a dying company in Indiana and landed on my feet in Key West. It is all about vision.

Anybody else notice this part?

Getting even more specific, Gladden said, "We could get the skill guys, but Pell got the linemen and he built those lines up."

That, says Pell, was by design.

"That's what we worked hardest on," said Pell, who is now a vice president with the National Auction Group in Birmingham, Ala.

"It takes you so long to get there (with linemen)," Pell said. "You can replenish your skill players in one year, but you cannot rebuild that line."

I applaud you Irishman, I too have "gone out on a limb" as some people put it, because those people didn't have a vision beyond what they are having for dinner. If my post seemed "snippy" I think it's because hardly a day goes by that someone doesn't bring up the "What if we hired CBB" question. I've always believed that things have a way of working themselves out, and if it had been meant to be then things would have worked out differently. There is no guarantee as to what would or would not have happened. Had CBB been using some of his tactics at UA, we may have felt the wrath of the NZAA much sooner. Who knows, we may have been the SMU that was used to make an example of. The "what ifs" never end so I'll put a stop to it myself.

I think we can safely assume that had we hired Diddy, there wouldn't have been any losing streak to the goobers. I think we can also assume that there were no Mensas on that hiring committee.:rolleye2:

About twice or three times a year, somebody digs this tired old story up and acts like they've never heard it before -- they're shocked that a University president would actually require a football coach to interview for a job and that we could have hired...gulp...take off your hat...Bobby Bowden. At that point in time, Bowden had ZERO NCs and had been running around playing money games left and right. Bobby Bowden did not have the results that would preclude having to interview at the University of Alabama. Hindsight's 20/20.

On the other hand, considering who was sitting on the search committee (students, professors, etc.) if I were in his shoes I would have made the same judgement call...

How many HCs have we ever hired with NC's on their resumes? Bowden had a far more impressive record than Curry. He had won everywhere he'd been before, Curry was 31-43-4 at GaTech.

ok..i'm fixing to step on my soap box here...

1) I work in Tallahassee so I hear about Bowden all day long.

2) Bowden, in my opinion was looking for a way to NOT even be considered for the Bama job. He has stated many, many times after FSU was invited to join the SEC that he would not have won the two MNC's that he has won having to play Auburn, Alabama, LSU, UT, Georgia and Arkansas every year.

3) Bowden represents every thing that is wrong in college football today. YES EVERYTHING. How long do you think the parents of Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi would have sent their kids to Bama if players at the capstone were being arrested for stealing checks and forging them, breaking into each others rooms, buying $1000 worth of clothes at the local sports shop and only paying $100 for them, getting the good ole it's ok your on the team discount at the local Dillard's, beating up their girlfriends and running from the cops, bragging about always having "No less than $1000 in my pocket at all times and if needed breaking off a little something, something for my team" (thats a Deoin Sanders quote) oh speaking of primetime both he and Warrick Dunn were rumored to have never been seen on campus except gameday.

4) Lets make no mistake about it. Bowden fattened his win total by playing a patsey schedule and then by joining the "Almost Competitive Conf." otherwise known as the ACC.

5) I can't believe people still look at thea article and "WISH" we would have hired Bowden. To tell the truth he would not have lasted 5 years at Bama. FSU is willing to accept losing to Miami as long as they beat Clemson by 50, Duke by 60, NCST by 20, UNC by 45.

6) people I could care less if we beat Ole Miss by 1 or 100, MSU by 70, Vandy by 45 but if we lose to Auburn and UT by 2 pts combined it makes me sick.

7) every year before the Miami game the FSU alums are thinking "how are we going to lose this game again" not thinking "We need to win this game and the conf. it has been to long since we won a NC"

8) I just cant stand Bowden...period. His idea of dicipline is this...the first string WR that runs a 4.3 and scores 3 TD's a game can get caught snorting a pound of cocain while walking down main st. and all he needs to do is run the stadium steps, the third string walk on offensive lineman gets caught jay walking and he gets kicked off the team.

Ask yourself ... would you really want this in a head coach ? How many former players under Coach Bryant have said their lives were better for knowing him? How many former FSU greats have said the same thing about Bowden?

Bottom line is CBB is a good coach,we probably would have won many games under him, and sec titles and maybe mnc's. he is most certainly better than CBC, CMD, and CDF. However, we would never have had CGS, and not having such a decent, honest man at the helm would have been a travesty!!

NO, NO, NO for Bowden being head coach at Bama. We have certainly done our rumbling and stumbling when hiring head coaches over the past 24 years, but Bowden would not have been the answer. I never believed he could sustain long term success at the Capstone.

If Bama had hired Bowden in 1986, I think there's little doubt that we would have won lots more games and titles in the last 20 years than we did with Curry, Stallings, DuBose, Fran, and Shula. Bowden is unquestionably one of the legends of the game. Stallings is the only coach on our list that could even be called "very good."

I for one would not sell my soul for a few wins. The biggest mistake Bama made in Head Coaches was not getting the deal done with Frank Beamer then hiring Dubose.

I agree, We lost a very good coach because a few bozo's dropped the ball! Instead of having one coach we are on our fifth and a few may disagree but i think the NCAA tells fulmer to take a hike. DuBose was an easy target for fulmer and the NCAA. FSU is like UT untouchable,Bama would have been also.

FSU was "untouchable" because the NZAA was willing to look the other way at a perrenial doormat(FSU) as long as they were beating those powerhouses the NZAA despises and taking the spotlight away from the UA's of the world. With Bear gone they would have jumped at the chance to nail us the minute "Diddy" handed out the first pair of free shoes were he the HC at UA.
