could we learn a lesson from auburn?

in my humble opinion i think a lot of auburn's success this year compared with how they did last year is due to al borges.

i like the system alabama is running now but even with croyle in i don't think the offense was doing as well as it could have. people will often say how much we need stability, and frankly i just don't have the judgement to know whether that is true, but if the results aren't there after a while i want change. dave radar doesn't have a great track record. if by the end of this year our offense isn't productive at putting POINTS on the board could we learn a lesson from auburn? just look how revitalized their offense is under Borges instead of Nall. if alabama had somelike like homer smith in next year could we reap immediate improvements? tommy tubberville hasn't been afraid to pull the trigger on changing staff when things didn't work out. his track record is bumpy but it appears to be working now.

Yeah, we probably should constantly change coaches about the time they learn the kids names and become familiar with their abilities. No point in letting them have a sense of job security.

:biga: There is an age old football analogy that teams make there biggest improvements between the 2nd and 3rd games. Of course that is not etched in stone and it IS only an analogy. However, given a margin of 1, maybe 2 it does hold fairly true. The same can be said about a program. of course some variables must be considered there as well.

It never ceases to amaze me to hear people are not seeing improvement. Are y'all watching the same football team I am?. This football team is leaps and bounds from where we were last year, and CMS and staff have been able to do this in 1yr and two months...Note that I DID NOT use two years or even one and a half. This staff has had Two summers, One football season, One spring, and seven weeks. Not to add we lost one of the best quarterbacks in the country in week three!!!

We are 9th in country in rushing offense, 59th in total offense (see above) we are 31st in scoring offense averaging 30.43 pts per game and that's with an output of 13 pts in the two losses, and playing with someone elses talent. We WILL be fine, actually much better than fine. In three years we will be down right scarry. Give the man and his staff time to bring their kids in while having three to four FULL years in the system.

Now back to Tubby. His track record shows that he has not accepted the blame/responsibility for his team. Everytime things get bad, he fires a coordinator, blames the kids, or moves on. Period!!! Auburns success is directly relate to fact that they are loaded with talent...Think not??? Let's see where Tubby and company are the next two years. There not young anymore and that excuse will not get it anymore...

Whether or not there has been marked improvement over last year is still highly debatable, imo. Why do I say that? Because we are playing a much weaker schedule this year as opposed to last season, when we had played both Georgia and OK at this point. Are we 5-2(4-2 if you throw out the meaningless game against Western Carolina High School) at this point mainly because of Joe Kines' defensive schemes and Dave Rader's play-calling, or, could it be, we simply have faced a weaker slate of opponents this year to measure against? My guess is, that question will be answered over the next four-five weeks, and then we will have a more definitive answer that we will all have to live with, like it or not.

I don't know about Al Borges. I'm sure your points are valid. I do see some similarities between this BAMA team and the Polytechnical Institute.

I'd like to see Alabama go into Neyland the way Auburn did and empty the seats by halftime. They went in there knowing they were better than Tennessee. I hope our guys see the same thing this week while they're watching film.

Auburn looks really good to me, mainly because they run the ball as well as anyone and they have a tough defense. Their senior QB has made some improvements over the course of his career. I'm still not sure they are great at the receiver positions.

Tennessee, not so much. They may beat us, but they'll have to play their butts off to do it.

Hey, if Tennessee is all that good and they play up to their potential... then we get to watch a great game.

Football can be like a microcosm for life.

Sometimes it is just a good opportunity to get after their *****.
 
Why is everyone so negative? Auburn went out and found a quality assistant coach who has improved on the worst part of Auburn's team. Borges has taken Jason Campbell and improved his QBing skills tremendously in a very short time. He has balanced out their offense and they are now even more difficult to contend with. When CMS was hired at Alabama I had hoped his offense would be very similar. I guess I was wrong.

Maybe he can be converted to the good guys..............

his background is defense. It wasn't that hard for him to turn over the "O." CMS is our de facto OC and QB coach and Rader is his assistant. We will live and die by that, unless he changes present practice.
 
We'll know better by the end of the year but my opinion is our offense could be better with the talent we have had under Shula. I would prefer to have the best coaching we can get and I think Shula is man enough to change offensive philosophies down the road if the opportunity arises. What's so bad about what Auburn did. Would you have rather had continuity under Nall or the offense Auburn now has with Borges? I could tell pretty much straight away that Les Koening was a natural playcaller and I think he did a good job getting a lot out of our offense back then. He wasn't perfect. They really wasted the talent of Zow, in my opinion, but I think the Koening offense was more capable of winning games than our current offense. And I'm not talking about talent, I'm saying you take any players and I think that old offense has a better shot of putting up points and winning games through ball control.

If anyone thinks the Rader/Shula offense is a top notch scheme please explain to me how, because I'm not getting it. I'm not saying we have to have a top notch scheme. Mal Moore won us an NC. But we don't have the kind of dominant team like those Mal Moore coached and I think we have to approach our offensive strategy a little differently.

In each case, the OC may suggest a few plays, but the "hands-on" play-calling was and is in the hands of the HC. To think otherwise is fantasy. On the Utah pass, as Darby passed Shula, he commented "good call."

There is nothing wrong with a head coach who is also the offensive guru. Both Coach Fraud-phony and Coach Mike Price are still winning with that philosophy.

anything was wrong with it. I just commented that it would make it very hard for him to go out and hire an OC. I think he would regard it as failure and would do it only if ordered to do so - as Tuberville was. People who know a lot more FB than I have told me that, since a HC only has a finite amount of time, when he plays the OC role also, some of the HC functions either suffer or they have to be delegated, usually to the assistant HC.
 
Borges or not, Auburn already had Campbell, Williams, Brown, etc in place.

Alabama doesn't have comparable talent because of the NCAA probation.

In two or three years, we might catch up...

Changing offensive coordinators will not affect how little depth and overall talent this team has.

It's not feasible to compare Alabama to Auburn at this point.
 
It's still all about execution. I don't see Auburn calling plays that they didn't call in the past two years. It's just that Campbell is able to execute this year, plays he didn't the past couple years. Call him a slow learner. But he's getting it done. Everyone knows AU has a running attack, so they backed off defending the pass. This just gives a QB who is improved ample opportunity to execute plays he used to mess up.

So, is our play calling off? I don't believe so. I think the play-calling has been pretty good, if not a bit conservative, which is fine considering the number of unproven ball players we have. Now, they are settling in, and believe it or not Pennington is gaining experience, composure, and confidence. The young man is beginning to believe he can lead the team. No point in making any changes at all right now.

It's about execution. Play-calling isn't our enemy. The officials are part of the problem, but they will always be. And that's not saying that we aren't commiting stupid penalties, because Lord knows we are.

Lots of room for improvment. But it will never happen if we re-vamp the program each week.
 
Well, just as an example of how much coaching does have an impact...UTEP is winning ball games now...a team that only won two games in each of the last three seasons.

No, we should not change coaches just for the heck of it obviously, but I favor changing until things are right. When this staff first came in, they should have kept Mike Price's playbook, because that is what they players knew. But, instead, they made the players learn their playbook. A good coach coaches to what the players can do best. And, at that time, it was the playbook they already knew.

As for Auburn, another example of what a coach can do...a new offensive coordinator and they are moving the ball now.
 
Their offense is very effective, but has anyone noticed their defense. I beieve that is the basis for their success. They have recruited a bunch of players who are very tough and very fast.

As CPB said many years ago; get players who are agile, mobile and hostile.
