Croom - hard core disciplinarian!

TerryP said:
The question that needs to be asked, and answered personally, is would you rather have disciplinary actions handled in house, or in the public eye?
Croom made this public when he addressed the media, specifically pointing out that these kids would not miss a game. It would be one thing if we were guessing. We are not. The only meaningful leverage that a coach has is playing time. Croom left that on the table and then told the world...

I haven't read the transcripts of the pressor...and I doubt they are available. If so, someone post a link.

I'd bet...he was asked if they would miss a game and he said no.

However,

By no means is it the only leverage (meaningful) that a coach has. I know personally of players that have felt dead after having to report to Rocky at 6AM. You think that doesn't make an impression? You don't know Rocky.

Not to mention, there are financial penalties that can be levied against players.

There are two, of many, leverages a coach can use.

Your comment has taken my point a bit out of context...considering, I was talking about discipline issues in our house.

Fair enough. I assumed, wrongfully, that you wanted that connection drawn - as several had compared the dicipline styles of Shula and Croom. I still disagree about the leverage piece, but admit that this type of thing depends on the individual athlete. What works for one, might not for another...

Everyone is talking about how Croom and CMS handle their players disciplinary problems. Everyone also talks about the legal trouble that the players get into. No one mentions the department of Judicial Affairs. Dealing with Judicial Affairs at UA is probably the most difficult of the three and I would assume that there is a similar department at State. If you get in trouble with the law, assuming it's nothing huge, and they find out you are a student, the local legal system is not any problem, but the office of Judicial Affairs will make you want to leave the country. There is so much red tape, hearings, meetings, community service, and holds on registration that it's ridiculous. Even if the local authorities determine that you did nothing wrong (as was determined in my case) you still have months, even years of dealing with the Judicial Affairs people. It's likely that those players from State will be dealing with this mess for a long time. I doubt they got off as easy as it sounds.

Fair enough, but I believe it's the coach's job to influence the players' lives, not just 'make sure someone does something about it'.

Croom has shown his true colors since going there, over and over. This isn't an isolated picture of his character, it's simply another bit of evidence of the kind of man he is, imo...

Good Point. I was treating this as an isolated incident. However, like you said, this is just another insight into how he deals with tough situations over there. I'm just glad he isn't here to do the same with our team.

I think it should be said though that the cop was off-duty and per the article never said he was until after the fight.

Thus, they didn't go after a guy in uniform as I think some are implying (though not saying outright)

Hold up and wait a minuet.
mmmm.. this was talked about right after it happened and I said then that croom would let them slide.
When the season starts they will be on the team, every last one.
I also said that they had their court date pushed back because croom was pulling a “fulmer” and trying to get the witnesses to be sure that they saw what they thought they saw???
Makes my head hurt.
The Police officer and the SPD have had a lot of pressure to drop the charge down to a misdemeanor, well it worked.
I live less than 20 minuets from state and I hear what’s happening in stark Vegas on a daily basis.
Croom is not much different than Sherrill except Sherrill won.
Some one said that the officer was drunk.
Nope not even close.
He was jumped while breaking up a fight between two girls.
The MSU thugs wanted to see the fight continue so when the guy (Off duty Police Officer Demetric Armstead) tried to break up the fight the MSU thugs began to assault Armstead, knocking him to the floor and kicking him and striking him with their fists.
They were told by the bouncers that armstead was a COP, they didn’t stop.
When they let up armstead went out side and called for the nearest SPD unit to come to the scene.
While out side calling for help they jumped him again, only stopping when sirens were heard.
This has been the same statement of every witness.
They were to go before the judge the next day at 2:00 pm (the assault took place on 4-1-06) but it got pushed back to May 1st.
Now guess what 6 football players beating one man(who happened to be an off duty police officer) is now a misdemeanor.
The SPD police chief even had this to say” “The Police Department appreciates the cooperation and understanding of the Mississippi State Athletic Department and their assistance in resolving this situation.”
Wow they appreciate MSU cooperating, they were so glad that they were allowed to arrest the thugs, oops I mean “good young men”.
Just be thankful we didn’t hire this fool.
He’s gone after this year anyway.

As TerryP said you dont really know what really happens on the inside punishment(they may or may not be getting extra conditioning or something) , so I save my judgement to what really matters to me and that is BAMA.

Under normal circumstances I would not link an interview with Sly after what he has said and done since not being hired at Alabama. Especially since seeing and hearing about his negative Bama comments along with his objectionable behavior after the last Bama/MSU game.

Here is the latest interview with Sly where he addresses the topic of this thread among other things. It is PF Radio and it is somewhat of a Croom lovefest. If anyone wants to hear what he has to say about the players and his reasoning for the disciplinary actions he took you can click below.

Finebaum Interview: 05/02 Sylvester Croom - MSU football (Audio)

I've always maintained that we got the better coach of the two, & I don't know enough to pass judgement, but I'd have to say I'm highly dissapointed in what I've seen/heard/read of CSC, as a head coach. I really hope he has some success......mostly because he's Alum, & partly because I'd hate to see MSU get anyone really good.......the SEC is tough enough as it is!

How can someone be charged with assaulting a police office when he was off duty(ERGO-normal citizen?) Unless I'm missing something, if's he off duty, he's a normal citizen so why isn't the charge just assault?

So..does this mean that he can drive 100 mph in his off duty time in his personnel car also and not be subjected to everyday laws????

A cop is a cop on duty and off. If he identified himself as a cop (you can do that, even off duty), then they were aware of his status. This is when Croom's kids should have stopped and backed off.....but they didn't (this gets you jail time in 99.9% of the country) and they continued to attack the cop. Croom's kids are damn lucky they were in a small town instead of a big city. In a big city, the chances are good to great that another off duty cop (county, city, ATF, etc) was not in the same club. It would have been a different outcome. They are also lucky they were not shot. Some off duty cops carry their weapon.....all the time.

No, he cannot drive 100 mph......Unless he is in pursuit of a citizen - yes, they can come after you even if they're off duty.

This type of behavior is becoming all too common in athletics. Lets hope these kids do something good with the break they have been given. I believe in second chances for young kids, but it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the whole bunch. I can remember when I was young, some of the nicest acting kids in front of parents became the worst examples when out on the town. You can't judge character with a stop watch. It has to be one of the most difficult evaluations to make as a coach.
