A 2 time NC? He’s going to be in P5 until he retires OR something scandalous happens.
With how he is treating his fanbase I wouldn’t be surprised if more about how involved his brother was in the program comes out. Or something else.

When people put up front’s like Dabo does there is usually stuff behind that front that they are overcompensating for something…. Hence the Hugh Freeze comparison

Saying it is one thing. His actions speak the truth, and he always has an excuse for everything that has "wronged" him. He doesn't own anything.
And you are correct. He should own things. I don't watch a lot of Dabo. So I don't see as much as some on here do I guess. I really don't care all that much. Not a Clemson fan AT ALL.

Which is a testimony to how CNS is handling change and things that he doesn't like and that he can't really control. If we just worry about the things that we control, life is much better. Dabo is letting the things he can't control him and ruin his team.
And we always knew some things didn't we? But a sidewalk fan....like almost 100% of us here..dont need to be talking to a HC in certain ways. What Dabo probably should have done is handle it in a different way...while still responding. JMO.

I think Dabo started out ok, but after the first minute of response, he should have said "Thanks for your call" and hung up on him, but then he just drums on and on and starts sounding like a lunatic.

On a wider field, Dabo's strength and Saban's strength were their ability to recruit top talent. Before NLI there was no money in college football and the way to get money was to go to championship level programs that got you noticed. That's what they sold. Now with NLI you can make more money in college in some instances than the NFL. Yes, it's only for a bit, but these kids can't grasp anything beyond the next few months of their life. So now the talent spreads out more and more. Between the two coaches I believe Saban is the better coach and head of program. So I believe he's in a better position with NLI to continue succeeding. But even inside of that I don't know if either coach is going to be able to win any more championships. I think it remains to be seen if anyone can do it repeatedly. I can probably see a situation where certain combinations of staff and talent align right and they win a natty. but I don't know if those combinations will last or be repeated.

Unless Georgia just keeps winning nattys in which case we might as well stop watching college football

I live in SC, but I haven't heard many Clemson fans openly critical of him. Mostly they are just not talking at all. They're pretty humbled (which I admit, I am loving). I'm sure that they are pretty disappointed, but the ones I know seem to have hope that the ship will be righted at some point. And if not this year, then next year.

As for his response to the caller, and I didn't listen to it, whether he wishes to think so or not, he is a representative of Clemson University, and I think his employer expects him to maintain his composure and not go off half cocked. Self control (or lack of it) says a lot about you/me/him.

I think it's obvious from the comparison that it is about your job and career.
Lots of things are obvious here. Couple of days ago..someone on this board explained to me how lucrative College coaching is today. Well...Dabo is well aware of his buyout AND his future. He just might be at the crossroads many suspected that he would arrive at. Wonder if he is whistling that old song worn out so long ago? "Take the Money and Run"? He is acting like as though that he might be weighing options...or has been told his options..and now is not sure he wants to accept them.

The caller had some valid points but went too far, as did Dabo. Dabo has a history of cringe inducing sound bites and the caller's accusation of arrogance seems well placed. Dabo frequently tries to straddle the line between underdog and Big Dog and you can't do that. He could have responded in a much better way while gently putting the caller in his place, but he got too personal with old Tyler.

I'm sure the question was inappropriate, but I think he'd have done better to blow it off. Going off like he did gives the kid the win. Can't imagine Saban or Napier reacting that way.
Have you seen a Nick Saban press conference? The only reason he hasn’t gone off like that is because obviously Alabama has much better call screeners than Clemson does.

Thin skinned?

He's just telling it like it is.

Sick and tired of these little entitled butt hurt (so-called) fans who cannot handle losing a football game.

The disrespect to ask a coach that question.....his parents must be proud.....
In today's world, they probably are proud. In fact, I would almost bet on it.

Could not disagree more.

HCs don't 'deserve' to be treated any differently than anyone else. Heck, in the grand scheme of things, a high-profile CFB HC is about as "important" as a pop star - maybe lots of influence in some circles, but very little significance in anyone's life outside of entertainment.

They might love being placed on pedestals, but they're not above being called out for poor performance. Do the job at the same level you're being paid to perform or deal with the sniping from the masses.

2 problems with that

1) Saban doesn’t go around on his local show saying moronic stuff like “we have too many bandwagoners so maybe we should lose a couple to kill the bandwagon”

2) Saban doesn’t just personally attack individual fans because they say something he doesn’t agree with. Saban usually addresses fans as a whole in a lot more nuanced way. Saban also realizes that expectations are high because of what he has accomplished and doesn’t feel the need to bring his personal accomplishments as trivial as him getting married into the argument.
I’m also gonna guess the CTSN has better call screeners than Clemson’s media folks.

Well Saban really only takes a select few people on a Thursday.

I asked him a question at Baumhowers and the lady running the show asked me the content and directed me how to say it. So in general they know what is going to be asked and they generally go with the

I agree it didn't sound that bad to begin with.

Not defending Dabo, but I think we've all done this. We think we have a good point or idea that seems logical and then when it comes out it doesn't sound as good as we thought it would and then we double down on it and start repeating ourselves and it sounds even worse.

In case you are wondering, "No, I don't know this from experience."

The smart among us catch themselves and are willing to correct their path rather than doubling down on a bad or stupid idea. Karen Awwshucks lacks the self-awareness to recognize the problem.

Self-awareness is probably the most underrated human quality.

Yesterday my wife and I were talking about how if we all had the ability to step outside of self and see ourselves as others see us we'd probably NOT do most of the stupid stuff we do.

Getting "respect" demands "giving" respect. I don't remember Coach Bryant ever talking bad about fans. He knew that at Alabama that it is about "winning" and he knew the consequences of not winning. He took accountability for the product on the field and handled it well. CNS knows what is expected of him at Alabama, just like Coach Bryant knew the expectations.

Dabo has been defensive since "day 1" when his hire was questioned. He is defensive in front of the press and the fans. When he reaches back to the Danny Ford years for a reference, it's a "look at what I've done" moment. It's still about him and it's not about the players or the school. Yes, the sidewalk fan does have a stake in the matter.

Saban's been thin-skinned about some stuff in the past, but the on-the-field performance was always high enough that people moved on without focusing on it.

Coach Karen Awwshucks is sucking at her job right now and really ought to just own it. You suck at your job, and you're being paid an obscene amount of money specifically NOT to suck.

Do your job or own it - lashing out at someone who correctly points out that you're being vastly overpaid for the results is childish, even if the fan is acting entitled.

Fans aren't paid, coaches are. Shut up and coach or answer the questions like a man.
'FANS AREN'T PAID. COACHES ARE...
SHUT UP AND COACH OR ANSWER THE QUESTIONS LIKE A MAN.'
I agree 100%.
Maybe now a few of the fans that wanted 'Debo' to follow Coach Saban will see the error of their thinking.
'Debo' showed he isn't THE MAN. He never will be.
