So I have a massive file of Alabama football information and one thing I watch are all time career stats. What Derrick Henry did trampling the all time rushing stats was unimaginable but Damien Harris has a chance to do something pretty special. Due in part to him being part of a stable of running backs I don't see him threatening Henry's record but by my math he has a 6.7 yards per carry career mark. The highest YPC in the top 15 backs is Bobby Marlow at 6.3 YPC. With another great year running he has a chance to shatter Marlow's record which has been out there for a while.

All of which begs the question, What happened in the Iron Bowl?

I thought Eddie Lacy averaged like 6.something ypc in his career? Maybe 6.8?

He averaged 6.77 yards per carry. Marlow's 6.27 yards per carry is the highest for a player with a minimum of 400 carries. Eddie is second in the minimum 200 carries department behind Wilbur Jackson's 7.21.

Damien has 326 career rushes. I suspect he'll get past 400 rushes this year.

Apology, slammer . . . it doesn't beg the question. It raises the question, or brings up the question.

That said, Damien Harris is a great running back. Hope he is better utilized this season.

I had no idea Wilbur Jackson averaged 7.21. Wow!

As I recall Wilbur lost his footing a lot. With a better pair of cleats ...

Best part is this - you remove his FR year where he had limited playing time and fewer YPC and his average (from 2016 and 2017) jumps from 6.7 ypc to an astounding 7.2 ypc! He averaged 7.4 ypc in 2017, wow!

DH is a much better back than many people give him credit for. He should carry the ball at least 15-20 time a game. I personally think he should be featured more. Even in the past with our loaded backfields, we always had a featured back. First was Ingram, then Richardson, then Lacy, then Yeldon, then Henry. Now other RB's carried the ball those years, but those backs were featured more and received the majority of the carries. The last two years we have gone to a run by committee. DH could really be special if he could get 15-20 carries a game. But that's just my opinion.

I tend to think we could be a lot like 2012 on offense next year if Tagovailoa starts next year. Well, at least the 2012 offense that was intended with Lacy, Yeldon, and Fowler. Harris & Harris will be the two-headed feature back and Jacobs will probably spend a lot of time in two-back shotgun with one of the Harris tandem.

The possibilities are endless with that 2 back pistol/shotgun formation.

The only problem with that is after the Clemson game in which he carried it 17 times for 77yds.
In an interview he was talking about how that game really took a toll on him. That was with the time off. I honestly don't think he can give you that many carries every week. He was limited down the stretch 2016.
I love him as a rb and his numbers are no doubt astonishing but I think 10-12 carries is about it. I would hope that if CNS/OC thought he could run it 15-20 times 7.0+ yrds a carry he would.
Another amazing stat. I think he had 5 negative rushing yards all year. Something ridiculous like that.

You are correct about Lacy, I didn't realize he had enough yards to be on my leading rusher list but he appears to be 13th. Harris has a chance to beat his YPC average

I don't think it was the number of carries I think it was the 4 NFL ready defensive linemen Clemson had to stop him. That line was sick.

some of our fans were calling him a bust after his limited role in his freshmen year.
btw, Harris greatly improved over the course of a season ( his freshman to sophomore) as well as any RB under Saban.

And the amazing thing is Brian Robinson is a star in the making. He will get Najee's carries from this past year but he could be a feature back also.

Really surprised Robinson didn't redshirt in 2017 with all the Depth Alabama had at running back. But He looked pretty good to me in mop up duty. So why not?
