Daniel Moore Files Appeal

Daniel Moore, the artist who has memorialized some of the Alabama Crimson Tide's greatest football feats, has objected to part of a judge's order that says he can't reproduce his artwork for things such as calendars.

Hopefully he wins the appeal. Since the university got mad about people posting pics online I have lost any care for how they feel about things like this, and will buy a Daniel Moore print before I purchase any kind of pic from the University

There was a lot of discussion here on Tide Fans about the judges ruling on the case a couple of months ago. There were some here that thought Daniel Moore had won the case. This clearly shows Moore is not happy with the ruling and I'm sure that certain "powers that be" at the university were not happy with the ruling either.

Moore won the right to sell his limited edition prints only without having to pay a royalty to the school. The judge ruled that Moore must pay a royalty for the smaller prints (these are not limited edition prints), coffee mugs, calendars, etc. As some of us stated when we discussed this a couple of months ago, neither side is happy with the ruling.

Dear Jesus, has it really gotten this bad??? The man immortalizes our greatest plays and players, and the University wants to make him pay royalties? Were they paying him for the good publicity? Saying you have a Daniel Moore piece is like saying you have part of a legend (sorry art lovers). I get the University's fundamental argument, he is making money off of likenesses of their players, equipment, stadium, etc etc etc. But surely everyone can see this is cutting off your nose to spite your face literally right?

That sir, is precisely why alot of us feel that it was a lawsuit that should have never been filed by the University to begin with.

My main problem with all of this is that it only serves to divide us from a University that we love and cherish. Finus was wrong. Whats more is that he KNOWS it.

I agree completely, I really have been puzzled by the university's actions in this situation. I was really hoping that this would not drag on, but when there's money involved...

The egos involved in this case must be so big that some of these guys can barely fit their head through the door. Make a deal, people.

The egos are with the Legal Eagles at the Univ of Alabama. Moore is just trying to protect his constitutional rights. It is the same Constitutional basis for why news reporting (the use of the Alabama logo), and books and magazines don't have to get permission to show "things Alabama".

The last decision was really an attempt to get them to the bargaining table. Guess that UA isn't budging. A lot of people might disagree with me here, but I hope that UA loses everything in this deal. UA is becoming obscenely heavy handed and it disgusts me...

My wife had to order my 2010 calendar from The Downtown Gallery because when she called to order at New Life Art, she was told they were all sold out. The UA yuppity yups can go sit on an egg in this matter, haven't they made enough money already?

This is all about business, finding every untapped revenue stream and going after it. It is ugly because many fans still see Alabama as a pure pastime....it's not. It's about winning and stadium expansions, which is of course expensive.

Somehow a little common sense has been lost, and good businesss sense has been thrown out the window.

Like mentioned, the amount of money paid on lawyers fees the past 12 years or so has been astronomical. Who's to blame? They are.
