Darius Paige and Johnathon Cook Qualify; Robert Foster Update (Page 15)

Re: Darius Paige and Johnathon Cook Qualify; Robert Foster Awaits Clearinghouse (Page

Wouldn't go that far, but clearly a late arrival will make it very difficult for him to be a meaningful contributor early in the season, and unless we have some injuries it may be difficult for him to get on the field in anything but special teams work and mop-up duty. Still, I'll take that over JUCO any day of the week.
Yes sir especially with the A. Hill situation.

Correct, but I don't recall Saban addressing the specific academic issue like he did today.
It's not necessarily custom and practice, but it's not particularly unusual either. He's done it before with a few kids.

He probably spoke on Alfy Hill. Truthfully, most kids know by now whether they've qualified or not. Alfy's and RF's situations are a bit unique in their own right. Normally a kid has multiple classes to make up (ie E. Robinson) if they are in academic limbo.

I don't think it was that unusual considering he was asked a direct question about Foster. It wasn't like he volunteered it himself without being asked.

I see it as good news. Given the talent at WR, who knows how much RF would contribute this year anyway? Seems to me that getting him to campus was the real victory. Now he's truly ours.

Not counting chickens early here, since Robert is not cleared yet, but who would have thought that Paige, Cook, and Foster would all 3 be on the team this year? All our 2013 signees ...

Pretty long odds of that happening, admittedly, but we still aren't there yet.

Funny thing about this is that Foster was thought to be in far better shape than either Paige or Cook. Just goes to show how unpredictable things can get in close cases as they go through the Clearinghouse.

As long as he passes this summer class with a C or above, he will be on the team come this fall. The bigger question is when he gets into the playbook and begins practicing.

I don't believe that is entirely accurate. He still has to make it through the Clearinghouse, and even though the staff obviously feels confident that this course will not be questioned, that is not a given just yet. Just have to keep our fingers crossed on this one.

I just don't get it though. He's taking a class again after passing it so it appeases the NCAA. What curriculum was changed that he had to take it again?
Let me clarify this a bit on what has apparently transpired:

Foster apparently took an online course to replace the grade he made in the traditional classroom course. He made the grade that he needed, but when his transcript was sent through the Clearinghouse, they refused to accept the online course, so now he has to go back and take the course yet again, presumably through another provider (one with better record keeping, more responsibilities, more demanding curriculum, etc.).

Thanks. It's probably been explained before but appreciate you doing it again, plus I'm high off cold medicine.

I know many here hate the NCAA with the passion of a thousand burning suns, and I basically concur, but I think the ruling here is fair.

The NCAA is like a healthcare insurance provider -- they seem to adjust their rules to suit their whim at any time. Silly suggestion I know, but perhaps it would be a good idea for the NCAA to list approved on-line providers so a family or school counselor could look up the list to ensure that the class a kid is taking will be approved.:eek2:

Is it an accurate presumption that is not possible to determine whether or not the NCAA will accept an online course before the student takes it? If the answer is "No", then I`ll never understand why a kid would take a chance on one when so much is on the line. Can somebody please explain this to me since it`s not hard to find examples where online courses have been disastrous when it comes to the clowns in Indianapolis?

To answer your first question, no it is not possible to make any definitive determination from the outset. You try to pick courses that you believe the Clearinghouse will accept, obviously, but there is no guarantee of anything.

You're looking at this a bit wrong, though. It's not a kid making a bad decision on taking a course with no certainty in the outcome even if he makes the grade, it's more of an issue than that. When you get this late in the game, you have kids who have taken the traditional courses and who didn't perform well enough to qualify academically. In the face of that, they try to replace those grades by the only mechanism left possible at that point -- non-traditional courses (i.e. online and correspondence courses) taken during the summer -- and you just have to hope it works out. It's not a conscious decision to proceed on that basis, it's actually a last-ditch effort being made because you otherwise weren't able to make the grades.

Agreed entirely. As I've stated on here many times before, as watered down as the academic standards have become, the Clearinghouse isn't the one to whom the finger of blame should be pointed if a prospective "student-athlete" fails to qualify academically.

These people aren't looking for a 3.8 and a 29 on the ACT. Anybody who can muster even a 2.4 and a 18 will pass through with flying colors (even though a normal candidate for admission would be rejected in five seconds with that GPA / ACT combo on their application).
