Lionel Mitchell commits: Tide Welcomes Big DB

Tide Welcomes Big DB
As expected, Lionel Mitchell made a commitment to Alabama this weekend. Mitchell is a tall defensive back prospect that became a hot name at Hargrave Military Academy this year.

As expected, Lionel Mitchell made a commitment to Alabama on his official visit.

"He told me he was going to commit while he was there," said Hargrave Head Coach Robert Prunty moments ago.

Mitchell is a 6-1 defensive back prospect that shined at Hargrave this year after spending his senior season at Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain Georgia.

Mitchell had offers from Michigan, Va Tech and Maryland

Sometimes it helps to look at the other schools the player had offers to as well. We have a couple like Schreiber and Huber who did not have many major offers, but they showed up at the camps and outperformed the 4 star guys. Schreiber is rated low because there isn't a market for 220 lb defensive ends. But not all the analysts take into account that he is going to be playing OLB for us. A 6'2 215 lb OLB with superior pass rushing skills and 4.5 speed is a weapon. He sacked the #1 rated dual threat QB in the country (Perrilloux) 5 times in one game.

Huber on the other hand, showed up at camp and impressed everybody. I remember seeing on one site that he had the best camp performances at three different positions, LB, DE and FB I think. Some guys just have an "it" factor that the rating services can't put a number on. If there is a low rated guy with an offer, chances are he impressed the staff at camp, or they saw something on film that they loved. I don't think Shula subscribes to rivals. I like the staff's ability so far to evaluate talent. A low ranking does not always mean a player will be a bust in college. See Demeco Ryans and Wallace Gilberry for examples.

How many four and five star players has Coach Shula recruited? Anyone know? Seems to me he is getting alot of three star and belows, at least according to Rivals and other recruiting guru sites.

Be careful for what you wish for. That team up the road in Obnoxoiusville have plenty of 4 & 5 stars on the team and it is the case of the inmates ruling the asylum. In addition, Coach Shula doesn't want to waste his time "investigating" rapes, gunshots, fights, drugs, booze, etc. that takes up much of Phatimus' time, Of course, Phatimus doesn't have to worry about his players getting in trouble for plagiarism or cheating on exams as it is impossible to plagiarize or cheat in chair stacking 101, 201, 301, and 401!!

OK, Coach Shula wants players that fit into his system. The star rating doesnt really mean that much to him. Coach Shula has said many of times he wants athletic players that are coachable and never quit He also gets players that could play more than 1 position. Sometimes these 4 and 5 star athletes arent coachable and they will quit on you(so why would we want them) Miami is loaded with 4 and 5 star players, but they seem to not give it their all when you watch them play(they also have 3 loses this season) ok my point is its not all about 4 and 5 star players. 3 star and even 2 star players are very good players. They just arent really exspected to contribute right away(even though some do). Demeco Ryans was a 3 star, so was S Castille, Keith Brown, Z Night, Prothro, Freddie Roach and the list goes on and on. Coach Shula knows what he wants, and the last 2 recruiting seasons has shown that he gets what he wants. Give him a chance people.

I would like to add 1 more thing. Wallace Gilbary was a 1 star, yes thats right a 1 star recruit. The previous staffs of Fran and Price did not recruit him. He was not given any D1 scholly offers. Coach Shula arived in the spring and signed him in the summer of 2003. Gilbary was Shulas 1st recruit. Well in 2004 Gilbary was named to the SEC ALL FRESHMAN TEAM. Man coach shula sure doesnt know how to recruit or notice talent. People, i am telling you, Coach Shula can recruit. Look at all of the Freshman that played this past year. This class will probaly be better than last years. GIVE SHULA TIME.

I've tried to explain how stars are doled out before, and it falls on deaf ears. Here's a quick redirect, particularly on QB Jimmy Barnes. He just got his star rating elevated from a 3-star to a 4-star on one service, because they finally got around to seeing him in person less than a month ago. But that didn't stop Barnes from getting tagged a "3-star" for months, which is what most people remember. I don't find it fair.

When I was doing NARCAS rankings every year, I didn't assign rankings until late January. But where's the fun in that, if you're a recruiting junkie?

If you won't take it from me, take it from someone else. Here's an ESPN column from this week that sheds some interesting light on high-star guys vs. sleepers in the 2001 recruiting class:

It is amazing how people on this board still doubt Coach Shula's ability to recruit.
I know what you mean. I for one have never doubted it one bit. Shula, and his staff are doing a tremendous job. I can't wait til next year.

RTR :biga:

Can I drop this Tidebit for ya?

With the adjustments in schemes we'll see next season Mitchell will fit perfectly in a safety position. Of course, this is just my opinion. ;)

Last season, I repeatedly mentioned we need players to fit schemes...and we are beginning to see that fall into place.

Good God...our DL next season may very well be something very special to watch. As a whole...the D will be.

Another thing that factors into the equation and it's impossible to acurately guage is when will a kid reach his peak. A lot of those 4 and 5 star phenoms are at their peak in HS and just don't get any better. Conversely, a lot of the lower rated kids are just starting to gather steam by the time they're leaving HS and blossom in college. I'd much rather have a coach try to make that determination after observing the athletes first hand in camps rather than a recruiting guru who's depending on stats.

It would be scary to imagine all the great players BAMA would've missed out on by relying on the star system.

2 - 4 stars according to BOL/Rivals. The rest are three stars.

I don't put much stock into the ratings. DuBose had stellar classes and half of them never made in on campus because of grades.

They have Garth and Ryans one stars, I hardly would think they are playing on a 1 star level.

Now why do you have to do this?

This is going to be the longest offseason ever.

CMS will take our twos and threes and beat their fours and fives. Just wait and see. As I have said earlier with a little sarcasm, I believe sometimes that a player loses a star if he is leaning towards Bama. Sure seems that way.
Hats off to the staff for their hard efforts at recruiting. I think they are doing fantastic.

I dont really remember exactly how it was said but Spurrier made a comment about UT being ranked ahead of UF in recruiting every year that "They beat us in recruiting every year and we beat them on the field". i think Spurrier was taking a jab more a Fulmer.

The point being is it's not the ones you lose that hurts but what you do with the ones you get the matters.
