Dennis Dodd + Prothro shot

davefrat said:
well, i wrote him and told him that if tyrone were my son, old dennis would need to hire a security detail.

i also wrote the editors to complain.

there's no excuse for this kind of writing at the expense of a kid.

i have to disagree with the notion that writing to complain about this kind of journalistic flotsam and jetsom somehow dignifies dodd's comments.

he's crossed a line of decency and he and his bosses need to be told.

When will you guys learn? Every few months, Dodd takes a shot at Bama fans, and every message board on the internet posts his crap, and thousands of angry Bama fans email him.

When will you guys realize that that's EXACTLY what he wanted you to do!

All he has to do is go to his editor and say 'wow my latest article got 5,768 responses!', and his editor pats him on the back and tells him to take the rest of the day off.

If you REALLY want to get Dodd, you'll ignore him. Totally.

Because the ONLY reason he is going after Bama fans, is because he is a HACK that can get no response from his normal writing. So he jabs Bama fans with a stick, gets them emailing his editor, and he gets a pat on the back.

Ignore him, and his editor won't be getting emails, and Dodd will get fired. It's that simple.

Again, every time you see an article slamming Bama, he might as well be holding up a sign that reads 'I am desperate because my writing is crap and no one cares! Bama fans save me!'.

And every time we do.

Ignore Dodd and he'll be out of a job. Period.

I just wrote this to cbs.sportsline.

I think Dennis Dodd's comment about Tyrone Prothro in his bowl breakdown was out of line. I really don't see why this website would publish that. It was uncalled for to make jokes about a young man who spent 3 weeks in the hospital with an injury received while playing a game that makes Dodd so much money. I think Tyrone deserves an apology. I think Dodd's readers deserve an apology. I really enjoyed this website until this morning. I am not so sensitive that I think my football program is beyond reproach or tasteful jokes, but his comment is neither of those things. It was petty and snide and just mean spirited. If Dodd's child were hurt...if it was YOUR child who broke his leg in such a horrific matter...would any of this be so funny? I hope CBS is proud to sign that man's paycheck.
I never respond to those type articles, but if you do Bamagirl26 just showed you how it should be done. Responding just lets them know that people are reading their stuff. If you must respond, do it tactfully and don't stoop to the level of the one you're attacking. It makes it one of those pot meet kettle things.

The comment was removed because of those emails.

what did he say? there is nothing there about Pro.

It said something to the effect of...Something's got to give - besides Tyrone Prothro's leg that is.

With all that could be said about the Cotton Bowl, that's what Dodd thought was good to point out. The Prothro portion of the remark has been removed.

Anyone ever hear of the phrase: "Don't get down in the dirt & dig with 'em" ?

And PLEASE - All those e-mails to the guy: PLEASE think how it makes the Alabama fan-nation look in general: GOOD GRIEF: some of what I read here before I got too embarrassed to read the rest (& I mean embarassed for our fans' image)...well, it pretty much will confirm what SO MANY people all over the nation say about the state of Alabama or the SOUTH or University of Alabama fans in general...PLEASE let's not give them more ammunition!!!!

I didnt get to see the comment, however, even if it was classless, which I'm sure it was, he lives like that, this thread is a perfect example of why he wrote it...No telling how many hits that website got strictly from people clicking on this thread, and threads like this all around the country...CBSSPORTSLINE.COM's advertisers are very happy right now...Alot of hits

Just food for thought

You are exactly right. That is why I didn't click on the link and would not waste my time with a response to someone who makes a living inciting people's emotions so that he can get a response. If he were not successful in pushing your buttons, he would be out of a job. My grandmother used to tell me, "Son, you can't wrestle with a smutty pot without getting smut on you."

sorry, but i respectfully disagree. when someone makes such hurtful comments, there is nothing wrong with responding.

and your analogy to articles slamming bama is not appropriate. slamming a university is a far different thing from trying to get dime store laughs at the expense of a kid's suffering.

the idea that ignoring him will get him fired is absurd. did jimmy the greek get fired because people ignored him or because they complained to his superiors about his comments? were we to believe that cbs hired and paid jimmy the greek for the specific purpose of making off-color remarks that would anger people in order to boost ratings and advertising? that line of thinking makes no sense.

additionally, i didn't write him and his editors with the thought that i'd get him fired. i simply wanted to register my disgust with them.

that's kind of off the mark. like any journalist, dodd doesn't really get paid for what he writes, he gets paid to write articles that will entice people to stay on his site long enough to click some ads. without advertising, journalism would shrivel.

internet advertising is active, not passive like that on radio and tv.
simply visiting the site does not expose one to advertising in the same way that one is exposed to ads on tv or radio. you only get a "teaser" ad on the internet, which requires you to click on it to get the full promotional material. to the contrary, in order to avoid a radio or tv ad you have to actively avoid it by changing the station/channel.

i know advertisers look at "hits" to a site, but i think they are ultimately most concerned with how many of those generic hits result in actual hits of their specific ads. if it were otherwise, the mods here wouldn't have to constantly implore us to "click some more ads."

furthermore, if dodd and his editors' business advertising model is to get a few thousand bama fans to check out their site every few months by printing offensive material, they don't have much of a business model. or does dodd write daily columns aimed at ticking off a different fan base so that every day there is a different class of people who have been duped into visiting his site to complain to him and his editors?

with all due respect to those who believe that dennis dodd and his editors consciously offend for the purposes of advertising revenue...that's a pretty kooky theory.

bottom line is that journalism's primary purpose (contrary to the belief that it is to inform the public) is to generate advertising revenue. the above-mentioned theory just doesn't make any sense because it's not the number of people reading his columns and emailing him that matters. it's the number of people who patronize the advertisers on his site that matter. and i doubt too many outraged fans click on many of the ads on his page.

Some need to read this, then re-read it, then repeat the process until understood.

I was an advertising major, and I work alot in advertising, and trust me, people use off color humor and offensive getures ALL THE TIME to get ratings...

You really think Dodd hates all the teams he disses? NO, but he knows people will start talking about it, which in turn, causes people to read the article everybody is talking about

There is alot of truth to the "Bad publicity is better than no publicity at all" saying...

Paul Finebaum is a PERFECT example...How many times has he just completely railed Bama, and Mike Shula in particular...Hundreds...Yet, Bama fans continue to listen to him in record numbers daily, and you can see on this board, when he says something bad about the Tide, somebody posts it, and usually posts a link to the audio feed...Hence, more pub to his radio station from the people he is talking bad about

Dennis Dodd got tons of hits today, not only from ticked off Bama fans, but from AU fans, UT fans, TT fans, etc who, while they may have found it classless, many liked him taking a shot at a rival

Unfortunately, putting others down, sometimes in a classless way, in Advertising and Marketing today sells, big time, and if you think that's not the case, you're fooling yourself, IMO

Maybe y'all disagree, but just my $.02

Well done, Bamagirl. Class response to a classless statement.

If they like getting hits so much, I've got a pIRCh application and a army of bots that could give them a few million hits a second.

I'm just kidding. I don't launch DOS attacks. I have been tempted many times, however.

I understand completely where you're coming from. I've had an edumacation in business as well. I just don't think that SI's business model is to p!ss people off to generate ad revenue.

Seriously, if that was your incredibly talented son who suffered a possibly career-ending injury and was lying bloody on the field, you would expect an apology.

Dodd should offer one, publicly. (For those of you keeping score, it would be his second public apology to Alabama this season... he earlier called Shula "stupid" for having Pro in the game so late, and had to eat his words, in public, when many of us wrote him and pointed out how late starters were left in in dozens of games on the same exact day Pro was hurt.)

I'm an editor with a national magazine, and I would never let something like that be printed about a kid. It's beyond tasteless.

I think if you want to e-mail him, you should be respectful and ask him to apologize to Ty and his family, as well as those of us who have been so concerned about the young man for weeks.
