Devastating Tornado Damage in Tuscaloosa

A student that works in the ticket office called his Dad(friend of mine) and said William Vlahos is in the hospital. Said he was blown over 100 feet in the air.

It was posted on another board that Carson Tinker was in surgery today and that his girlfriend was killed. She was found 100 yards from the apartment. I haven't seen any confirmation on this, but the poster did provide the following link about the girlfriend.

Hopefully it's either Tinker or Vlachos and not both. At least that would be one less injured person, not even thinking about them being on the football team. Would be even better if it were neither. My prayers do go out to the family of the young lady who lost her life.

This article is about the athletic dept. The fact that there is no mention of everyone being accounted for is very disturbing. I just have to hope they haven't had enough time yet, and that everyone will be accounted for. I just feel like saying nothing right now is saying something if you know what I mean. I wish William a speedy recovery for his own sake not us as fans.

This article was released very early this morning so hopefully everyone is now accounted for, and I mean athlete or not. They just announced in local radio that a student from Dallas was killed yesterday.

Looks like we were typing at the same time.

Talked to a friend of mine on the emergency response team in Elmore county this morning and they had just finished bagging a 7th person last I heard. This is near Eclectic/Santuck area.

Family up in Huntsville & that area have heard estimates that they may be 2 weeks without power.

Needless to say had the tornado directly hit Bryant-Denny we would not be playing football there this year. The damage is horrendous enough but to think it could have been even worse... It was just a monster of a tornado.

If it had hit the stadium that would have been bad, but the worse part is that would have meant probably hitting Tutwiler and all the sorority houses full if kids. I am afraid its much worse than we know now, but a half mile north and the death toll could have been a thousand.

How can they not report this? It seems like by now some news service would discover it and report it. Is this from the area close to campus or another area in town? We have a family friend who is still unaccounted for at his point. Are there any press conferences scheduled by the mayor or any city officials?

They don't confirm deaths until a doctor or coroner has had a chance to examine them. That's why you see some reports going a lot higher than the confirmed number.

I'm totally undone by this. Thanks to all for the updates & pics. I didn't sleep well last night just remembering & thinking & praying.

For everyone's info, the CrimsonWhite's Twitter feed has been *fantastic* through this. Very good blend of info & pics; business-like, without being all sensational.

Praying,
exiled

My company is on one of FEMA's ATAC advance response teams. We haven't even been contacted yet, which means the local authorities are still in search and recovery. It's a slow process when they are mass casualties spread across a large region. There are hundreds of SAR teams going door to door, just like they did after Ivan, Katrina, Rita and Wilma. From the photos I've seen and seeing the chatter in the disaster response community, this event could be the worst in recent history.

If you don't live in Tuscaloosa or any of the other areas damaged by yesterday's storms, don't go there. You're just gonna get in the way and you could get hurt.

Pray for those who are lost and their families, and pray that those who are missing turn up safe and sound.

Our state has one of the best Emergency Management organizations in the country. I'd put it only behind Florida and Texas. We're good at this because we've had lots of practice.

FOX6 WBRC-TV out of Birmingham just tweeted this: "Our sister station to the north, WAFF, reports 147 people are dead between Franklin County and Hackleburg."

Coach Saban just reported on the radio that Carson Tinker was thrown 50 feet from his home, fractured his wrist and sustained a concussion but will be fine.

I heard this report with my own ears during lunch. A staffer walked up and handed the anchor a sheet of paper. The anchor said, "Are you SURE this is accurate?" Then read, "Law Enforcement in Franklin County are reporting the death toll in the Phil Campbell area to now be at 147."

I relayed this to several people, then after searching I haven't seen it again ANYWHERE else, including the WAFF website. I'm hoping it was a false report.

I just heard CNS on jox, and he said Carson Tinker was the only injury. He had a concussion and a fractured wrist, and will be OK.

Finebaum just allowed a caller to add that Carson's girlfriend, who was with him, was killed. PF said that he had heard this from sources off the air.

It's gotta be, I've looked everywhere. That number is extremely high.

Glad to hear he's ok. From all the reports I've read about Carter I feel pretty sure that my friends son got he and Vlahos mixed up. That's why I normally try to stay away from posting anything that's not documented or validated. My apologies.

Let me say this. As a survivor of Katrina(8 feet of water in my house) I can relate to the total astonishment that everyone in Tuscaloosa and surrounding counties must be feeling.

A hurricane is horrific, but at least you have days to prepare and you can be far away when it hits if you choose.

A tornado is the scariest thing in nature to me. They hit so quickly,do so much damage so fast, and they take lives in an instant.

I feel so sincerely sad right at this moment. For the families who lost loved ones, and those that lost their lives.

Buildings can be replaced. People can't be.

God bless the entire city of Tuscaloosa and all the family's effected by this horrible tragedy.

My prayers are with you.

sip
