Crimson Tide winning streak ends at six games

March 26, 2013

HOOVER, Ala. -
The Alabama baseball team was limited to four hits as the UAB Blazers defeated the Crimson Tide, 1-0, at the Hoover Met on Tuesday night. With the loss, Alabama falls to 16-10 overall, while the Blazers improved to 10-14.

"For whatever reason, in this game we have struggled to score runs and tonight was no different," Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard said. "I thought the second through the lineup we started having some better at-bats, hit a few balls at them and made they a few plays. We had a shot there with the bases loaded and couldn't get the big hit."

Alabama starter Tucker Hawley (4-2) took the loss after surrendering the game's only run in the third inning. Hawley threw five innings, allowing one earned run on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Jay Shaw threw a scoreless inning in relief of Hawley, and Mike Oczypok allowed one hit in two innings to close out the game for Alabama.

"They pitched well, made quality pitches and had a lot of combinations," Gaspard said. "Their guys threw strikes and offensively we couldn't put anything together tonight. We certainly pitched it well enough and made some plays defensively. Oczypok pitched really well in the back of the game. We just couldn't get the hit to start an inning and just couldn't get the big hit."

Blazers starting pitcher Sam Kelley (2-1) earned the win after allowing two hits with a strikeout and two walks in five-plus innings. Jacob German got the last out of the game, retiring the only batter he faced, to record his first save of the season.

For the fourth time this season, Alabama was shutout by its opponent and saw its six-game winning streak come to an end. The four hits from the Tide came from three players, as Ben Moore was 2-for-4 and Georgie Salem and Austen Smith had one hit each.

The Blazers scored the game's only run when John Frost delivered a bases loaded single to center field with one out in the third. Hawley got the next hitter, Tyler Mims, to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play, preventing further damage.

Alabama's best opportunity to score came in the sixth when it loaded the bases with one out. After Salem singled to open the inning, Moore's single to left field was misplayed by the UAB left fielder allowing the runner to advance to second and third. Brett Booth was walked intentionally to load the bases for Smith. Reliever Cory Eller struck out Smith swinging then Kyle Overstreet's soft liner to third base ended the threat.

Smith's only hit in the game came with one out in the ninth and pinch-runner Riley Colburn moved up to second on a ground out by Overstreet, putting the potential tying run in scoring position. German entered the game to face designated hitter Cameron Carlisle, who flied out to left field to end the game.

Alabama returns to Southeastern Conference action on Thursday with game one of a three-game series against the Auburn Tigers, with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. CST, from Plainsman Park. Game two will start at 6 p.m. CST on Friday, and the series wraps up on Saturday with a 3 p.m. CST start. Saturday's game will be televised on CSS with Matt Stewart and Joe Beckwith calling the action.

Shutout for the fifth time this year, this go around courtesy of the last place team in conference usa, sporting a 4.68 team ERA, and "it's for whatever reason", eh, Mitch? Surely it has nothing to do with what our hitters are being taught and everything to do with the unknown reasons that Brian Shoop has as to why he completely owns you.

Does that make his record vs. the extension center 1-6?

This is ridiculous. 1-6 . A grand total of one run scored in the last three games against UAB. Pretty clear that Bama's significant talent advantage cannot overcome the massive disparity in managerial skill in this one. Shoop owns Gaspard. UAB also has a volunteer assistant with over 1,300 victories and 8 Omaha appearances. Alabama has Andy Phillips.

Hmm. Restless natives!

I wondered last night if there is just some really bad vibe that the guys are getting from the staff about these middies. I know we are 5-3, but it seems that we don't score much in these mid-week games and am wondering if the staff treats them differently than they do other games?

1-0, second year in a row. Joy.

Yep JoJo that volunteer assistant came to our school to help us with a fundraiser and didn't charge us a dime. Great guy IMHO.

boy o boy. win a few in the sec and nothing said. lose one to uab and inept. why not get rid of them for rolling thru a stop sign. rtr

bench, unless you see something I don't see I think that we are looking at a race to the finish with Bama, UTK, Auburn and Georgia for those last couple of spots in Hoover. I think that you are smart enough to know that. Winning six in a row was fun. Very fun. But that's quite likely to be our last such stretch this year. I think that we ARE better than last year, and that there is more talent on the roster, but this team is not going to win against the better SEC squads, and we will struggle to finish .500 in the league.

And if we don't, do you want this staff back here next year? I don't. I am not going to lie. I didn't want them back this year, because the trend has been in a downward direction since the man got the job, and all the excuses that we use as fans, though they ARE relevent, didn't seem to work against Jim nearly as bad as they are working against Mitch. Maybe we DO have to have an extraordinary guy to run this program for us to win, but it's been pretty obvious through these four years that Mitch isn't that guy.

count me a dummy then. i am sure you are smart enough to think that misso is not going to finish in the middle of the sec.
i am patient enough to give the players and coaches a chance to play the schedule and root for them to win. after the season the people in charge will decide who leds the program. if you say we are better than last year then that should mean we are headed in the right direction. anyway rtr lets root for the tide this weekend.

You mean you don't think Missouri even has a chance to finish in the middle of the SEC standings? Maybe you should just be more patient and give Coach Jamieson and his boys a chance to play out the schedule before jumping to such conclusions. :cheers2:

i don't jj i was just trying to bmick the benifit of being smart. as the season goes on we will find out who is where. at least everybody has quit running the bus over players and are concentrating on grinding their axes on the coaches. rtr

Blind loyalty is a lot better than no loyalty at all, and I respect that about you, bench. And I am through arguing about this. We are all Alabama people here, and we all want the program to win. I have made a solemn vow that I am going to Omaha the next time we make it and I am not about to take that back.

What will be will be as far as the staff goes. As far as facilities go. There's not much I can do about it except stop buying tickets, and if I were going to do that it would have happened this year. So I will hope for the best and deal with the worst.
